New Grads!
CONGRATULATIONS and a great big welcome to the 185 new Canadian Certified Optometric Assistants (CCOAs).
We’re very happy to have you join the other 1,400+ current CCOAs. You have jumped over a very high hurdle successfully!
Pat yourselves on the back, and think of all the people who benefit from having you on staff as a CCOA – your doctors, your
co-workers, and your patients. Use those CCOA initials with pride – you earned them.
New National Optometric Incident Report Form Launched!
CAO is pleased to launch a national online incident report form! This incident report form collects information to identify
trends related to optometric services. Dr. Troy Brady from Alberta was the first OD to compete an incident report form to
report a complication arising from cosmetic contact lenses. The form is intended to be completed by Optometrists and/or
their knowledgeable staff, to record incidents for patients that have:
* asymptomatic eye disease
* problems with contact lenses or eye glasses purchased online OR without a prescription
* had a sight test (independent automated refraction) and experienced a problem
The national incident report form is an online form that should take no more than 5 minutes to complete. It is easy to use,
and provides important information on eye health issues. Our goal is to obtain at least 100 reported incidents each year from
across Canada. At this time, we are asking all eye health incidents identified in the bullets above to be reported using this
form. The form is to be used by ODs and their staff only.
CCOAs can take a leading role in recognizing when to report an incident and completing the actual incident report form.
Knowledge about eye health issues enables the optometric profession to proactively advocate for the eye health of
Canadians. We encourage and thank you for your participation.
Notes from the Lensometer Nulux Active Sponsored by HOYA Vision Care, Canada
There is no question that the digital age has changed people’s lifestyles. Time has become a precious commodity in our day.
We are so busy multi-tasking and are more easily accessible than ever; to the extent that the lines between work and personal
time are easily blurred. The use of modern devices like smartphones, tablets, and e-readers not only keep us efficient and
connected, but have also placed new stress on our eyes. We are forced to focus and refocus our gaze all day long, as we use
these modern conveniences.
This new and continued demand on our visual system can be eased by modern lens solutions like the Hoya Nulux Active.
This is a specialized aspheric single vision lens that helps eyes adjust easier between viewing near and distance; it’s
especially effective with the use of cell phones, computers and PDAs. With this increased visual performance we can work
and play better, longer! There are two Active styles: Active 8, for most adult single vision patients, and the Active 5 for
those younger adults, including students who may be suited to having less active support.
