Page 2 I/O Update Special Investigations Faculty and students in the I/O Program started a series of research projects for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. The projects are under the direction of Dr. Major David Englert. David is a graduate of MSU and has been a big supporter of the program. Dan Sachau, Mahlia Matsch and Jessica Gertz are studying work life balance of agents and their spouses. Lisa Perez, Jeremy Jones, Jonathan Page, and Jeff Buchanan are studying the effects of exposure to disturbing media images at the Defense Computer Forensics Lab. Andi Lassiter will start a study examining the effectiveness of INDOC training courses in Georgia. In addition to this project, the OERG contracted with the Air Force to create an automated exit interview system. Michael Pate manages this project. Driving Me to Distraction This past July, professors Jonathan Page, Kasee Page, Lisa Perez and graduate student Ashley Stanoch traveled to London to conduct research with the London Metropolitan Police Service. The group completed two projects examining the effects of stress and training on the attentional processes of police drivers. In the first project, the research team followed one class of 8 drivers through the entire 4 week training program. Once a week, each driver spent half a day wearing an EEG cap connected to a computer that collected information about his brain activity while driving. During each session, one of the researchers rode along with the student drivers and instructors as they learned to maneuver the car and monitor their surroundings while pursuing a fleeing “suspect” – all while traveling at speeds over 100 mph on open London highways. Before and after each of these driving sessions, the drivers also completed an anxiety questionnaire and provided saliva samples. The saliva was analyzed for the presence of stress hormones (cortisol and alpha-amylase). This study will help determine how the brain’s responses to the driving tasks change over time as a result of training. In the second project, the team tested officers while driving on a skidpan – a small closed course coated with an oil slick. Drivers wore an EEG cap while driving circles and figure-eights on the skidpan. As they drove, the team asked the drivers to listen to a series of high or low-tone beeps. They were instructed to count only the high tones and ignore the low tones. This project examined the ability of drivers to divide their attention between multiple tasks while under stress. Winter 2008 Alumni Focus: Amanda Wuest, Hewitt Associates After graduating from MSU in 2003, I returned to small town Iowa and worked as a Human Resources Generalist at one of Electrolux Home Products’ manufacturing facilities. The 2,000 employee factory in Webster City, Iowa manufactures washers and dryers for Frigidaire. In this organized-labor environment my skin thickened, I learned how to think on my feet, and work with people of all levels of the organization. I also quickly learned that this was not the “dream job” that Dr. Sachau promised that my I/O degree would lead to. After 18 months of the factory life (think Rivethead by Ben Hamper), I made a life-changing decision to accept a new job and moved south. In 2005, I joined Hewitt Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. Hewitt Associates is a Human Resources Outsourcing and Consulting firm. I am a Consultant in the Talent and Organizational Consulting group. In this role, I consult with Fortune 500 clients on broad organizational development projects focused on strategy, talent and performance management, leadership development, and improving overall HR effectiveness. Page 3 I truly enjoy my role as a consultant. It allows me to work with HR professionals in many different organizations and sectors. I have had the opportunity to work with financial services, transportation/logistics, retail, sales and even non-profit organizations. The most exciting part of my job is helping HR departments become more aligned with the business in order to obtain organizational goals. In my brief professional career in HR, I have learned a few valuable lessons: Listen. I have found that subordinates, peers, and superiors have been impressed when I have taken the time to listen. It is amazing how much I have been able to learn about a person, a problem, culture, or an organization by listening. Keep It Simple! I first learned this lesson from Dr. Sheets during a particularly brutal Consulting Challenge. For me, this lesson has been validated time and time again. There have been many times when I have had to prove myself in a brief amount of time and keeping it simple was the key to success. Never stop learning. After leaving Mankato, I thought my days of studying and being tested would be over…not true. The workforce is constantly changing. Clients, coworkers and superiors expect their employees to understand the latest research and trends and be able to incorporate them into their work. Taking advantage of information published by professional organizations and publications is a great way to stay informed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to reminisce about the glory days at MSU! amanda.wuest@hewitt.com
