A Note from the Director, Dan Sachau
It was another good year in Mankato.
I say it every year, but our success is largely
attributable to the wonderful support we
get from alumni and friends of the program.
For example, this year, students were given
the opportunity to work on consulting projects
for the US Air Force, Cambria,
MNSCU, Questar, National Pork Board,
Scholarship America, and OptumHealth.
Because of the funding from these projects,
students were able to participate in the
SIOP conference and the IOOB conference.
In addition, students spent two weeks in
southeast Asia. Let me put it this way, because
of your support, students had the
opportunity to travel to Indianapolis, Dayton,
Kansas City, Washington DC, New
York, Saigon, Da Nang, and Hong Kong.
A special
thanks to Kristi
Olafson and
Mary Amundsen
for hosting
the Consulting
Challenge at Target.
Thanks also
to Jon and Kasee Page for inviting MSU
students and staff to collaborate on their
research with the London Metropolitan
Police. You can read more about this project
inside.
We are off
to Africa this
May! We
would certainly
appreciate your
support. In
fact, we would
like you to
come along!
Special Investigations
Faculty and students in the I/O Program started a series of research projects for the Air
Force Office of Special Investigations. The projects are under the direction of Dr. Major
David Englert. David is a graduate of MSU and has been a big supporter of the
program.
Dan Sachau, Mahlia Matsch and Jessica Gertz are studying work
life balance of agents and their spouses. Lisa Perez, Jeremy Jones,
Jonathan Page, and Jeff Buchanan are studying the effects of exposure
to disturbing media images at the Defense Computer Forensics
Lab. Andi Lassiter will start a study examining the effectiveness of
INDOC training courses in Georgia. In addition to this project, the
OERG contracted with the Air Force to create an automated exit interview
system. Michael Pate manages this project.
Driving Me to Distraction
This past July, professors Jonathan Page, Kasee
Page, Lisa Perez and graduate student Ashley
Stanoch traveled to London to conduct research
with the London Metropolitan Police Service. The
group completed two projects examining the effects
of stress and training on the attentional processes of
police drivers.
In the first project, the research team followed one
class of 8 drivers through the entire 4 week training
program. Once a week, each driver spent half a day
wearing an EEG cap connected to a computer that
collected information about his brain activity while
driving. During each session, one of the researchers
rode along with the student drivers and instructors as
they learned to maneuver the car and monitor their
surroundings while pursuing a fleeing “suspect” – all while traveling at speeds over 100 mph on open London
highways. Before and after each of these driving sessions, the drivers also completed an anxiety questionnaire
and provided saliva samples. The saliva was analyzed for the presence of stress hormones (cortisol and
alpha-amylase). This study will help determine how the brain’s responses to the driving tasks change over
time as a result of training.
In the second project, the team tested officers
while driving on a skidpan – a small closed course
coated with an oil slick. Drivers wore an EEG cap
while driving circles and figure-eights on the skidpan.
As they drove, the team asked the drivers to listen
to a series of high or low-tone beeps. They were
instructed to count only the high tones and ignore
the low tones. This project examined the ability of
drivers to divide their attention between multiple tasks while under
stress.
Alumni Focus: Amanda Wuest, Hewitt Associates
After graduating from MSU in 2003, I returned to small town Iowa
and worked as a Human Resources Generalist at one of Electrolux
Home Products’ manufacturing facilities. The 2,000 employee factory in
Webster City, Iowa manufactures washers and dryers for Frigidaire. In
this organized-labor environment my skin thickened, I learned how to
think on my feet, and work with people of all levels of the organization. I
also quickly learned that this was not the “dream job” that Dr. Sachau
promised that my I/O degree would lead to.
After 18 months of the factory life (think Rivethead by Ben Hamper),
I made a life-changing decision to accept a new job and moved south. In
2005, I joined Hewitt Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. Hewitt Associates
is a Human Resources Outsourcing and Consulting firm. I am a Consultant
in the Talent and Organizational Consulting group. In this role, I
consult with Fortune 500 clients on broad organizational development
projects focused on strategy, talent and performance management, leadership
development, and improving overall HR effectiveness.
Page 3
I truly enjoy my role as a consultant. It allows me to work with HR
professionals in many different organizations and sectors. I have had the opportunity to work with financial
services, transportation/logistics, retail, sales and even non-profit organizations. The most exciting part of my
job is helping HR departments become more aligned with the business in order to obtain organizational
goals.
In my brief professional career in HR, I have learned a few valuable lessons:
Listen. I have found that subordinates, peers, and superiors have been impressed when I have taken
the time to listen. It is amazing how much I have been able to learn about a person, a problem,
culture, or an organization by listening.
Keep It Simple! I first learned this lesson from Dr. Sheets during a particularly brutal Consulting
Challenge. For me, this lesson has been validated time and time again. There have been many times
when I have had to prove myself in a brief amount of time and keeping it simple was the key to
success.
Never stop learning. After leaving Mankato, I thought my days of studying and being tested would
be over…not true. The workforce is constantly changing. Clients, coworkers and superiors expect
their employees to understand the latest research and trends and be able to incorporate
them into their work. Taking advantage of information published by professional organizations and
publications is a great way to stay informed.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to reminisce about the glory days at
MSU! amanda.wuest@hewitt.com

On Their Own. In this section, three alumni who started their own consulting
practices discuss the costs and benefits of being your own boss.
Steve Netsch – Clear Data Research
I started ClearData Research almost five years ago.
ClearData is a consulting firm dedicated to helping clients
develop the maximum level of customer loyalty that they
are capable of attaining. We provide a suite of web-based
research tools that measure customer satisfaction in retail
chain stores. Our systems invite customers to take a web
survey that populates an online reporting system showing
clients in every store how good or bad the customer experience
has been.
Client executives, regional managers and store managers
can access reports 24/7on the Internet that give them the
power to take immediate action when customer problems
arise. We help clients:
1. Understand the customer loyalty equation.
2. Measure and manage the customer experience
in each of the retail stores.
3. Create the strongest customer retention and
recommendation rates in the industry.
ClearData also provides employee opinion research
and consulting programs such as Key Driver analysis to
determine the factors that most influence important issues
such as customers' likelihood to recommend, perceptions
of price for value, and other critical summary measures.
You can find more information about ClearData Research
at this address: www.cleardata-research.com
I am also a partner in two other research consulting
firms:
Business Dynamics: businessdynamics.com
This organization develops clear value leadership for commodity
organizations such as Cargill and Sonoco.
The Dcypher Group: dcyphergroup.com
Dcypher quantifies the emotional reaction of individuals
and groups in easy to read graphical summaries.
The method was developed by an internationally recognized
expert in the area of linguistics and was validated in
over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles.
Benefits and Challenges of Running my own Company.
One big benefit of running my own company is the
freedom that comes from designing and selling my own
ideas. You can make life easy or miserable for yourself as
you create your delivery model and value proposition.
The big question is the degree to which you are going
to be personally involved with your clients. Trust me;
automation and mass-customization is the way to go.
The challenges are not for the faint of heart. How do
you replace your corporate income with your consulting
gig without starving to death? What are you going to sell
and why does anyone care? Do you create a brand new
concept or just sell what everyone else is selling? How do
you convince a client to choose you over a wellestablished
competitor? Seems hard? Yep, but you can do
it if you are very motivated... and a little crazy.
Silvertip Business Solutions
is a Montana based human
resources consulting firm focusing
on organizational development
initiatives through
proper planning, measurement,
and implementation. Our goal
is to raise employee morale &
satisfaction, increase customer loyalty, and generate successful
bottom line results.
Starting an I/O related business in a rural state has its
own set of difficulties. However, I knew I wanted to go
back to my roots in Montana. The hardship not only was
acquiring clients, but having them understand what we
actually do. We are the only firm in Montana that specializes
in I/O related functions. Currently, we are experiencing
some growing pains. Dealing with funding, staffing,
Nancy Branton - People Potential Group
As president of People
Potential Group, SM Inc., I
provide executive coaching,
career coaching, and
life coaching. My personal
branding statement is:
“Inspires and equips you to
build a meaningful career
or business, realize enduring
success in work and
life, and be a principled leader who creates a thriving
workplace." Also, I do corporate training and teambuilding
and, I help local companies with employee selection.
Recently, I became a contract career coach for Career-
Builder.com. My business has given me wonderful opportunities
to apply and integrate my expertise in I/O psychology,
human resources, leadership development, and
coaching.
Two years ago I developed a partnership with Susan
Whitcomb in California, owner of Career Coach Academy.
She founded Leadership Coach Academy-
www.leadershipcoachacademy for which I designed and
currently teach a Certified Leadership & Talent Management
Coach training program. In addition, we started
offering free, monthly Thought Leader Forums where we
interview leadership and career experts. This year, Susan
and I co-founded the Assessment Academy where we
offer assessment certification training that’s conducted by
delegating, and training can be stressful. But at the end of
the day, I wouldn't pass up the luxury of leaving my office
the developers of the assessments. All of our training is
conducted live on a bridge line and materials are
downloadable from our web site.
Benefits and Challenges of Running My Own Company
I really enjoy being my own boss, determining how to
spend my time, and setting my own hours. I love my work
and it gives me an opportunity to implement as many
creative ideas as I want. Also, I have the opportunity to
connect with successful people around the world.
It has taken a lot of effort, creativity, and money to
establish a business and keep it profitable. Transitioning
into coaching involved a considerable investment in professional
coach training. Typically, I work 60-70 hours/
week. In addition to my professional work, I need to allot
time for marketing, maintaining a web site and blogwww.nancybranton.typepad.com,
networking with colleagues
and prospective clients, and participating in professional
organizations.

Do you ever feel like hanging out with other I/O Psychology nerds? Do you ever wonder which MSU I/O alumni are
around the Twin Cities? Are you looking for work? Are you looking to hire? Do you have questions about your career?
Do you feel like having some drinks and appetizers? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should
come out to the monthly I/O Networking group that meets in the Twin Cities. The mission of this group is to help develop
the MSU I/O Network within the Twin Cities. Currently there are about 20 individuals connected with this group,
with any number of them showing up each month. The meetings provide a great opportunity to learn more about what
other people are doing, develop business relationships with colleagues, and to just plain have fun. We normally meet on
the first Wednesday of the month at about 5:30. Locations sometimes vary, so please contact either Andy Dybvig
(andy.dybvig@maritz.com) or Nikki Miller(nikkilmoore@yahoo.com) if you are interested in attending.
