30 years of crime solving – and still going
strong
ZDF’s longest-running access prime-time
cop series
Solid franchise with over 400 episodes

O
n 2 January 1978, ZDF began airing a police series
that was solidly built, straightforward and realistic:
“SOKO 5113,” about a special unit of the Munich police
force. More than 30 years and 400 episodes later,
the series is still going strong, regularly drawing about
four million viewers to ZDF’s access prime-time slot, and
thrilling viewers in other territories around the world.
What is the secret of this series’ longevity and success?
The secret lies partly in the constant evolution of the program
concept to keep it in tune with the times. This includes the rejuvenation
of series regulars, such as squad leader Horst Schickl,
the longest-serving inspector on German TV, who was “on duty”
from January 1978 to January 2008. His replacement Arthur
Bauer (played by Gerd Silberbauer) is a former hostage negotiation
specialist who was put on leave under dubious circumstances...
His authoritative style and latent rivalry with team
member Manne Brand ensure that the team spirit will be crackling
with tension.
The format itself is regularly updated with modern narrative elements
and film techniques, and with stories that reflect new
impulses and attitudes. But in spite of all modernization, the
series has never veered into excessive violence or brutality; it
continues to present a realistic, often light-hearted and always
gripping view of police work. “That’s what our job is really like!”
commented one German policeman. And who could be more
competent to judge this?
Another important aspect of the series is its high-caliber cast,
from its regulars to its guest stars. Especially the interpersonal
relations among the team members keep viewers returning to
characters they come to consider as friends. These now
also include Arthur Bauer, who has proven himself
a worthy successor of Horst Schickl.
And even if he stirs things up at headquarters,
his teammates’ commitment, loyalty
and positive spirit continue to be the
bane of Munich’s criminals – and the backbone
of a series with a license for success!
