In 1948 Mr Georg <strong>Geiss</strong><br />
founded the company Maschinenfabrik<br />
Georg <strong>Geiss</strong>, which<br />
he managed until his death in<br />
2002. He realised that plastics, a new material at<br />
that time, is the future for manifold production<br />
facilities. Vacuum forming <strong>machines</strong> have been<br />
produced since 1955, after initially engaging in<br />
prototyping <strong>and</strong> <strong>tool</strong> <strong>manufacturing</strong>.<br />
Based on forward-looking ideas, his company<br />
enjoyed a steady growth over many decades.<br />
Essential ideas that influenced the progress of<br />
vacuum forming technology were invented <strong>and</strong><br />
developed by him. Developments achieved under<br />
his direction:<br />
- the first vacuum forming machine with<br />
ergonomical loading height<br />
- the first bottom heater of a vacuum forming<br />
machine<br />
- the first stepless control of heating elements<br />
- the first electronic machine control <strong>and</strong><br />

This equipment complements the universal<br />
vacuum forming machine by adding pressure<br />
forming <strong>and</strong> Twin-Sheet. This option is available<br />
in 4 variations which are:<br />

Motorised drive<br />
Machines with motorised table drive<br />
This equipment allows extremely precise movement<br />
of the table. Freely programmable speeds,<br />
forces <strong>and</strong> positions can be selected <strong>and</strong> stored.<br />
Machines with motorised plug assist drive<br />
The precision of a CNC axis is also achieved<br />
here. Therefore, speeds, change over points <strong>and</strong><br />
forces are programmable <strong>and</strong> can be stored.<br />
Programmable axes<br />
All setting positions of a vacuum forming<br />
machine can thus be automated.<br />
The programmed value is stored<br />
together with the program onto a<br />
data carrier. After reloading of this<br />
program all values of all these programmable<br />
axes are automatically<br />
executed by the control one after the<br />
other. The following axes can now<br />
be programmed:<br />

Fast <strong>tool</strong> clamping system<br />

The fast clamping system performs 4 important<br />
functions of the <strong>tool</strong> change: taking off new <strong>tool</strong><br />
from fork-lift truck, aligning on machine table,<br />
clamping in machine, lifting of mould off<br />
machine table to h<strong>and</strong> over to fork-lift truck.<br />
This enables one man to do the <strong>tool</strong> change in<br />
the shortest time possible. On request, we can<br />
also fit retractable ball rollers. Tool change over<br />
wagons are also available. In this case, every<br />
<strong>tool</strong> needs to be equipped with a closed bottom<br />
plate.<br />
Window plate system<br />
This option, invented by GEISS, patented <strong>and</strong> already successful installed in over<br />
500 <strong>machines</strong>, replaces the fixed window plate!<br />
The window plate system includes 4 separate plates positioned against each other like<br />
in an iris diaphragm. Our invention allows the stepless adjustment of both axes independently<br />
from one another! Except for our smallest sizes, the strokes are always the same.<br />
That machine axis which is directed from left to right (generally the longer<br />
axis) allows a reduction by 1000 mm <strong>and</strong> the short axis over the width<br />
of the machine, by 500 mm!<br />
This means that our customers no longer need to have concerns about<br />
investment, organisation <strong>and</strong> storage of many different aperture plates.<br />
The operator is relieved of the necessity to change plates when changing<br />
size. A correctly heated window plate, even of the right size, is always<br />
available in the machine!

The precise measurement of the material temperature is used<br />
at 3 points for control:<br />
- in top heater for controlling heating time<br />
- in bottom heater for additional information<br />
- in machine frame for controlling cooling time<br />
Clean room equipment<br />
Class A shaped parts are increasingly required to<br />
have clean room quality. To that effect the results<br />
are very positive. The measurements show that a<br />
clean room enclosure, along with a very careful<br />
preparation, can reduce the number of particles<br />
suspended in the air within the cabin by 99.75 %!<br />
This is based on an additional set-up on a<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ard machine. Alternatively the clean room<br />
equipment is available in stainless steel.<br />

with quartz elements or optional with “FLASH” type<br />
elements.<br />
Hundreds of thous<strong>and</strong>s of these elements are in use.<br />
Their fast response helped the single-station vacuum<br />
forming machine achieve a high share of the market.<br />
In idle position at lowest setting, they are among the<br />
best energy saving heating elements in vacuum<br />
forming <strong>machines</strong>.<br />
The “FLASH” heater element system can often cut heating times<br />
in half. The productivity of the single-station vacuum forming<br />
machine is equal to productivity of multi-station <strong>machines</strong> –<br />
without their drawbacks.<br />
The power of each element is individually controlled (our<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ard!) <strong>and</strong> allows perfect adaptation to the most dem<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
applications!<br />
The low absorption at a wave length of 1 micrometer allows<br />
deep penetration of the radiation <strong>and</strong> perfect heating through of<br />
even very thick materials. Our halogen elements type “FLASH”<br />
are unrestricted applicable for all thermoforming materials!<br />
In the meantime nearly 400 <strong>machines</strong> equipped with our<br />
“FLASH” heating elements are operating successfully all over<br />

Over a period of 2 years, we developed a halogen element that combines several positive effects of the development together<br />
with company PHILIPS. The new element considerably reduces the influence of colour <strong>and</strong> at the same time increases<br />
the efficiency of the heating. The power consumption as well as the heating times for typical applications are remarkably<br />
reduced! Multi-color printed sheets of various thermoplastics are no longer a problem.<br />

Since their development in 1984, it was our aim to offer a range of CNC trimming <strong>machines</strong>, which would<br />
hold a leading market position in respect of technology, quality <strong>and</strong> productivity. The advantages of continuous<br />
path control, rigid portal design <strong>and</strong> high flexibility put our trimming <strong>machines</strong> very soon on the road to<br />
success. These <strong>machines</strong> are also designed in accordance with our parametric concept <strong>and</strong> are available in<br />
any nominal size <strong>and</strong> countless variations to achieve the optimum for the user.<br />
Over 450 <strong>machines</strong> supplied prove their productivity under harsh industrial conditions.<br />
Sinumerik 840D control<br />
The widely varying dem<strong>and</strong>s that we <strong>and</strong> our customers make on an<br />
NC control can nowadays only be met by the Sinumerik 840D. The integrated<br />
PC can meet all requirements with features such as modern data<br />
interfaces, easy operation with top performance, extensive 5-axes<br />
processing package, comprehensive programming facilities <strong>and</strong> safety<br />
feature “Safety Integrated”.<br />
The following options are available in our <strong>machines</strong>: Any offset, rotation,<br />
scaling <strong>and</strong> mirroring of the FRAME co-ordinate system, round <strong>tool</strong>-centerpoint<br />
TRAORI (RTCP), automatic motion control with Look Ahead function,<br />
COMPCURV <strong>and</strong> COMPCAD data compression, CONTPREC programmable<br />
contour precision, Circle in space through three points CIP, 3-D cutter<br />
length compensation <strong>and</strong> CUT3DC 3-D cutter radius compensation.<br />
As with all other CNC trimming <strong>machines</strong> of<br />
GEISS the nominal size is equal to the area<br />
size trimmed with 5-axes. This size is our<br />
most popular st<strong>and</strong>ard size.
Trimming machine FZ 1000 x 600<br />
The smallest size provides the same productivity <strong>and</strong> rigidity<br />
as the big ones. All programmes are interchangeable among<br />

For fast 5-axes trimming from foams for model <strong>manufacturing</strong> up to aluminium,<br />
all axes of this plant are equipped with gearless direct drives. Linear motors can<br />
boost the speed in the 3 longitudinal axes to up to 180 m/min. The two rotary<br />
axes B <strong>and</strong> C use gearless drives, so-called torque motors, which depending on<br />
version can achieve an angular speed of up to 900 angular degrees. The acceleration<br />
of these axes is much higher than that of conventional axes with gear<br />
drives.<br />
The <strong>machines</strong> for trimming of plastic <strong>and</strong> aluminium come<br />
into a new class! With CNC trimming center FZ Direct Drive<br />
the rotating axes are no longer the limitation at quick simultaneous<br />
movements <strong>and</strong> on horizontal surrounding of radii.

CNC trimming machine ECO series<br />
The current range of CNC trimming <strong>machines</strong> has been extended at the end of 2003 with the machine<br />
type "ECO". This new development is designed for light-duty applications <strong>and</strong> is also priced very<br />
attractively. The axes achieve feed speeds up to 75 m/min. The PC based control Sinumerik 840DI<br />
by Siemens provides the same 5-axes functions of its "big brothers"; yet:<br />
The price is economical – without saving on quality <strong>and</strong> service!<br />
In addition to plastics these trimming <strong>machines</strong> can also process wooden materials <strong>and</strong> aluminium.<br />
During the first year after introduction of this machine type we succeeded to sell 25 <strong>machines</strong> worldwide.<br />
Yet another proof that this new development places us again "one step ahead".<br />

For 5-axes <strong>and</strong> 3-axes trimming we offer exactly adapted trimming spindles<br />
with performances between 3 <strong>and</strong> 25 kW, speed up to 60.000 min-1<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>tool</strong> holding fixtures up to size HSK63 made by renowned manufacturers.<br />

CLASSIC trimming spindles<br />
The CLASSIC trimming spindles have a <strong>tool</strong><br />
clamping device that permits automatic <strong>tool</strong><br />
change. The particular feature of the CLASSIC<br />
trimming spindles is the interchangeable shaft<br />
unit. In the event of damage to the bearing, it<br />
is not necessary to remove <strong>and</strong> repair the<br />
complete spindle, but only the shaft unit. Also<br />
for these spindles we carry refurbished spindles<br />
permanently in stock.<br />
GEISS trimming spindles<br />
GEISS trimming spindles have 2 protruding shaft ends. The direction<br />
of rotation of these spindles can be inverted in seconds via<br />
program. The spindles are therefore especially suitable for the<br />
trimming of mouldings. GEISS spindles are available in 2 sizes.<br />
We have built up a very fast <strong>and</strong> unbureaucratic exchange <strong>and</strong><br />
repair service for GEISS trimming spindles, which we produce<br />
ourselves in every part in highest precision <strong>and</strong> which are subject<br />
to most rigorous quality control. Refurbished spindles <strong>and</strong> new<br />
spindles are permanently available. The refurbished spindles are<br />
offered to our customers at an extremely attractive price.<br />

The “Safety integrated” function <strong>and</strong> the high performance<br />
of Sinumerik, along with the proven portal<br />
design of our <strong>machines</strong>, allow the use of synchronous<br />
linear motors. These linear direct drives accelerate the<br />
machine from 15 m/s2 up to a speed of 180 m/min<br />
which permits an increase in production of 40 to<br />
100 %. In addition, this drive distinguishes itself<br />
through extreme rigidity <strong>and</strong> contour precision, as the<br />
<strong>machines</strong> are equipped with direct measuring systems<br />
<strong>and</strong> elimination of mechanical force transmission<br />
elements such as gears <strong>and</strong> belts. As there are<br />
hardly any mechanical components that might wear,<br />
these <strong>machines</strong> have a considerably longer life span.<br />

Due to their compact portal design, the <strong>machines</strong> can<br />
equiped in a simple way with a canopy. This machine<br />
enclosure allows the connection of extraction equipment<br />
for air re-circulation.<br />

Trimming<br />
Options for CNC trimming <strong>machines</strong><br />
Equipment with shuttle table, sliding table <strong>and</strong> rotary table<br />
The shuttle table is recommended for the loading<br />
<strong>and</strong> unloading of big parts. It is designed as an<br />
additional CNC axis. Protection is provided by light<br />
barriers or a safety laser scanner. The table moves<br />
alternately out of the machine at the left-h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
the right-h<strong>and</strong> side. When the shuttle table is positioned<br />
it shuts the machine case like a drawer or<br />
the machine case is shut by vertically running roller<br />
blinds.<br />
The rotary table is designed as NC-axis. Workpieces can be<br />
changed while the machine is working. Loading <strong>and</strong> unloading<br />
is at the same position so that the <strong>machines</strong> can easily be<br />
integrated into production lines. Owing to these advantages,<br />
<strong>machines</strong> with rotary tables are frequently used in the automotive<br />
industry, for example for the processing of dashboards.<br />
The danger area of the rotary table is protected by a light<br />
barrier at the front <strong>and</strong> a safety laser scanner that prevents<br />
trespassing the light barrier.<br />
Sliding tables move out of the machine<br />
to the front to facilitate the change of<br />
workpieces. Machines with centre<br />
screens can be fitted with 2 such tables.<br />
For large formed parts, the sliding tables<br />
can also be coupled.<br />

Measuring sensor <strong>and</strong> measuring cycles<br />

In addition to the measuring sensor on the sledge of the Z-axis for measuring<br />
<strong>and</strong> recording the work piece co-ordinates, a fixed sensor is available<br />
for automatic measuring of the machine axes <strong>and</strong> trimming <strong>tool</strong>s as well as<br />
a laser system for <strong>tool</strong> setting <strong>and</strong> breakage monitoring. Measuring cycles<br />
automatically perform error compensation, <strong>tool</strong> compensation <strong>and</strong> zero<br />
offsets are calculated <strong>and</strong> activated.<br />
Teachbox HT6<br />
The ideal complement to the control system for fast<br />
program creation directly on the workpiece via<br />
“teach-in”. The unit features integrated direction keys<br />
<strong>and</strong> supports all functions in all operating modes.<br />
Weakening of slush skins<br />
To ensure the function of invisible airbags in motor<br />
vehicles, the slush skins of dashboards <strong>and</strong> door panels<br />
must be cut down to a very precise residual wall<br />
thickness. Our <strong>machines</strong> with ultrasonic cutting unit are<br />
perfectly suited for this application <strong>and</strong> are already in<br />
operation in many factories. They are complemented by<br />
2 measuring sensors to compensate machine tolerances<br />
<strong>and</strong> thermal expansion as well as protocol system for the<br />
process parameters.<br />
Our experience in the manufacture of the necessary<br />
cutting jigs makes us the preferred supplier to the<br />

TT-in-one series<br />

The TT-in-one series is a unique system which combines<br />
vacuum forming machine, feeder <strong>and</strong> CNC equipment into a<br />
single unit. This fully automatic plant gives users a decisive<br />
edge over competitors:<br />
- the in-process stock (between vacuum forming machine<br />
<strong>and</strong> CNC machine) is no longer required,<br />
- the automation ensures a more uniform quality<br />
of the products.<br />
An essential advantage is the improved precision in the interaction<br />
of vacuum forming machine <strong>and</strong> CNC trimming.<br />
Due to smaller temperature differences the product materials<br />
are less affected by stress <strong>and</strong> last longer when being<br />
processed further.
