TALES FROM A
SUITCASE SERIES 1
This series documents moving accounts
of the lives of migrants from Europe and
Asia during the immediate post-war period
of 1946 - 1952. Sometimes, people came
to Australia simply because the queues were
shorter, and perhaps they were beguiled by
the idea of a place with sunny weather. Many
chose Australia for one reason only - it was
safe. Each person’s tale reveals the migrant experience
in raw and moving detail. Produced by Will Davis, SBS
Television. SBTSS
Tales from a Suitcase
The Afghan Experience Series
In this seven-part series, a range of Afghan people
relate the circumstances of their journies to Australia
from the late 1970’s to the present. It is the story of
the broad mosaic of their time: first under Communist,
then Mujaheddin and finally Taliban control. Some were
refugees who took the highly dangerous sea voyage to Australia, only
to be thrown into detention centres. For others, the memories are of
violence and death, of dispossession and escape, and the deep sadness
of a family left behind.
Seeking Asylum
Seeking Asylum includes harrowing interviews with
asylum seekers who have risked their lives at the
hands of people smugglers and now live in the
community for 30 months on Temporary Protection
Visas. Having made a perilous open-sea journey on
unseaworthy wooden river boats, all speak with fear
and trepidation about their escape from persecution,
torture and often death at the hands of fanatical fundamentalist regimes
including Afghanistan’s former Taliban government.
