This program is an excellent way to define and analyse
imperialism, as it examines three case studies: the
Spanish in Latin America; the British in India; and the
multinational division of Africa. Topics addressed are
the motives, methods of establishment and operation,
and effects of imperialism.
Cuban Missile Crisis
In 1962, the Soviet Union amassed an arsenal of nuclear
missiles in Cuba, which lies some 70 miles off the coast
of Florida. Four Russian submarines discovered in the
Caribbean provoked a stand-off that brought the world
perilously close to nuclear war. In this program you
will hear exclusive interviews with former Soviet naval
commanders and former White House aides and view archival footage
of unfolding events.
Americas Forgotten Allies
This documentary program tells the story of the
Montagnard hill tribes of Vietnam’s central highlands
- loyal allies to the American forces during the Vietnam
conflict who are now fighting for their existence, their
culture, and their land. During the Vietnam War
thousands of Montagnard hill tribesmen were recruited
by the CIA and Special Forces to fight the communists
in exchange for US promises of support and protection. Tragically, those
loyal US allies would be abandoned in 1975 to be brutally persecuted
by the vengeful communists. It was in 1992 however, when the last
resistance group of Montagnards, who were still fighting the Vietnam
War, would surrender. Like ghosts they stepped out of the jungle - 17
years after America left Vietnam.
The Art of War
In The Art of War, Betty Churcher brings her unique
perspective to a series on Australian art inspired
or provoked by a century of conflict, from World War
I to the “war on terror”. A personal exploration of art
rather than a comprehensive history, it reveals how
dramatically attitudes to war have changed and how
radically the trauma of war has changed art itself. With images from
official war artists, soldiers on the frontline or in POW camps, civilians
in concentration camps and those on the homefront, it is a story of
unknown artists and famous names such as George Lambert, Nora
Heysen, Wendy Sharpe and Sidney Nolan.
