Empires Martin Luther
Martin Luther’s attack on the all-powerful Catholic
Church was a knife to the heart of an empire that had
endured for over a thousand years. But Luther would
do more than revolutionise the Church, he offered the
Christian world a new vision of man’s relationship with
God and, in turn, redefined man’s relationship with
authority in general. ‘Empires Martin Luther’ is the dramatic story of the
Five broadcasters from across the globe are uniting
to tell the tragic story of Gallipoli - from all sides. We
follow the campaign as it unfolded, from its beginnings
at the War Council of London, through to the ensuing
naval attack and the landings and to its end, many
months later, when Allied troops silently withdrew in
the dead of the Turkish winter. First-hand accounts tell
viewers what Gallipoli looked, felt and smelled like, and remarkable 3D
Road to Tokyo
By late 1944, the worst of World War II appears to be over, but the
conflict in the Pacific is about to hot up and it will be a long road to
Tokyo for the Allies... Combining interviews and vivid archival footage,
this is an eyewitness account of an often forgotten episode in history,
providing a social context as well as a military overview of the titanic
struggle to defeat Japan. For Australia, it is signposted with some of
the bloodiest campaigns and most appalling events of the war - and
the memory of 8031 POWs who would never come home. “Excellent
historical documentary...Road to Tokyo is a prime example of wartime
historical documentary at its best.” Jim Schembri, The Age, 11/8/2005
Japan in Ruins - Tokyo, the Day
the War Ended Price of Peace
It is the day after the war. Nine million Japanese are
homeless. Three million have been killed in the war
and 1.3 million of these were civilians who died in
the massive American bombing campaign of which
the atomic bombing was only a part. It is only recently
that the Japanese themselves have begun to show a growing desire to
know and understand this pre-war to post-war period: the invasion of
China in 1931, the Pacific War from 1942, the conditions of surrender in
1945, followed by the forced reconstruction at the price of memory and
denial and under the authority of the victorious Americans. The film is
structured around the procedure established by the Americans for this
surrender ceremony in the Bay of Tokyo.
