The Colony
Australia’s first living history series is a blend of
historical discovery, social jeopardy, adventure
challenge and experiential learning as pampered 21st
Century ‘pioneers’ attempt to prove they’re tough
enough to survive their historical ordeal. Against this
backdrop, the series explores the gripping story of the
first settlements’ brutal, often bloody conflict between races (Aboriginal,
Irish and English), classes (convicts, free settlers and military) and men
and women. A British and and Irish family are shipped to the far side
of the world to join an Australian family. They enter an isolated world,
cut off from civilsation in almost every respect. They have to cope with
the lack of creature comforts as well as the gruelling chores of daily
life. How did the three European families, their volunteer convicts and
Aboriginal people come together to face the challenges of early European
settlement on the frontier?
The Habits of New Norcia
The Benedictine Monastery of New Norcia, the only
monastic town in Australia, was until 1973 New Norcia
Mission, home to generations of Aboriginal children.
It was an orphanage without orphans, as none of the
children were there because they had no parents. The
children suffered terrible hardships; used as child
labourers, starvation forced them to eat the food set aside for the
chickens, and cruel punishments were part of their daily existence.
Several of the children, now adults aged from 34 to 84, return to the
mission to recount their version of their history on display. Today the
Monastery at New Norica presents itself as a popular tourist attraction.
Tales from a Suitcase
The Afghan Experience Series
In this seven-part series, a range of Afghan people
relate the circumstances of their journies to Australia
from the late 1970’s to the present. It is the story of
the broad mosaic of their time: first under Communist,
then Mujaheddin and finally Taliban control. Some were
refugees who took the highly dangerous sea voyage to Australia, only
to be thrown into detention centres. For others, the memories are of
violence and death, of dispossession and escape, and the deep sadness
of a family left behind.
Film Australia’s Immigration
When Australia embarked on its mass migration program
after World War Two, it was with a movie camera in
hand. Film Australia, as the Government’s film unit,
made films to attract migrants and to change attitudes
to new arrivals. More recently, it made films about how
migrants themselves were changed by coming here and
the impact they had on shaping the nation. Film Australia’s Immigration
presents a selection of fascinating films from this historically significant
collection, along with contemporary interviews with some of the people
who made them and some who were in them. Combined with a website
Post war boom and bust. The Great Depression had its roots in the First
World War. We examine the efforts of various countries, including the
USA, Canada, Australia, and several in Europe, to make the transition
from war economies to more normal market conditions. It covers the
post-war boom in manufacturing and wheat production in the USA
drought conditions in North America; the economic, agricultural, and
societal conditions that led to the “Crash of ‘29”. The program uses
The Great Depression - Part 2
The global hardships of the 30s, economic solutions, the road to war.
This second program concludes the Great Depression story. It begins
the circular flow of a healthy economy. FDR’s “New Deal” in the USA is
covered extensively, as is the establishment of work camps in Canada
and the ensuing “On-to-Ottawa Trek”. As countries all over the world
tried to protect their domestic markets, they placed high tariffs on
imported goods; the video shows that this had the effect of worsening
the depression by bringing stagnation to world trade. The effect of
the Peace Treaty of Versailles on Germany is explained in the story of
Germany’s build-up to the Second World War. The video concludes with
THE HOLOCAUST
Witness: ‘Voices from the Holocaust’ is a prize-winning
documentary, in which testimonies of Holocaust
survivors and witnesses, some recorded as early as
documents reveal the Nazi era through the memories
of those who were there. A Hitler Youth, a Jesuit priest,
resistance fighters, concentration camp survivors, an
American POW, and a liberator present a vivid image
of the Holocaust in their own words. Since many of the
witnesses were in their teens or younger during the war
years, students can understand and identify with their
experiences on a more personal level. The accompanying
book of the same title provides resource material and the
loyal US allies would be abandoned in 1975 to be brutally persecuted
The Art of War
In The Art of War, Betty Churcher brings her unique
perspective to a series on Australian art inspired
or provoked by a century of conflict, from World War
I to the “war on terror”. A personal exploration of art
rather than a comprehensive history, it reveals how
dramatically attitudes to war have changed and how
radically the trauma of war has changed art itself. With images from
official war artists, soldiers on the frontline or in POW camps, civilians
in concentration camps and those on the homefront, it is a story of
unknown artists and famous names such as George Lambert, Nora
Heysen, Wendy Sharpe and Sidney Nolan.
Crime of Crimes - Part 1
Enemy / Land
Rather than being a grim litany of disaster, this series
analyses the social, political and historical conditions
that make ethnic cleansing possible. It begins with the
persecution of the Jews throughout history it continues
by looking at colonisers in North America, Australia and
South Africa who justified brutal expansion in the name of ‘civilising’
the native peoples: then considers ethnic cleansing of political ends.
The episode ‘Land’ focuses on the colonisers, who turned land into
property, clearing the indigenous people, establishing Europeans as
the new owners. This clear and settle policy was first tried out by the
English in Ireland but was also used later in North America and Australia
establishing Europeans as the new owners.
Nation / Vengeance
The episode ‘Nation’ looks at Europe at the end of the
19th and the beginning of the 20th Centuries when
the great empires were crumbling and the peoples of
Europe turned to nationhood to instil security and a
sense of belonging. In Turkey, the reign of the tyrannical
sultans was swept away, and replaced in 1908 by a group known as
the Young Turks, a group of military men who no longer saw the empire
as a priority. The episode ‘Vengeance’ looks at genocides in the former
Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda. These campaigns of mass murder
were conducted by people who felt that they were part of a group that
had suffered in the past, and wanted to right the wrongs of history. In
the history of genocide, the perpetrators have always needed a powerful
and convincing story to enable them to kill and justify their actions.
Drawing on people’s stories of an emotionally charged
radical song (the long-time anthem of socialism and
communism) to celebrate the relationship between
music and social change, and to evaluate the uncertain
fate of once thriving movements of the left. It takes
us on a lyrical journey from the Paris Commune to
the collapse of Soviet Communism, from the slums of
only song to change the world. With each rendering of The Internationale
Empires Egypt
‘Empires Egypt’ presents the most extraordinary period
Rome was still a marsh, Egypt was already 1,000 years
THE CELTS
T
he Celts were the first European people
north of the Alps to rise from anonymity.
They occupied lands from the Black Sea
to the Atlantic, sacked Rome and pilaged
Delphi. They were never an empire but they
were a civilisation - reviled for their barbarism
and admired for their artistic craftsmanship.
Wild, ferocious drunkards, they were also
romantics and mystics. They were indeed
‘the fathers of Europe’. Their story is a story of survival,
ANCIENT DISCOVERIES
SERIES 1
Today we live in a world unimaginable to even our
great-grandparents. It’s an age of hi-tech, jet aircraft,
supercomputers and intelligent machines. Since the
Industrial Revolution our world has progressed at lightning
pace, leaving all previous civilisations far behind it. Or
has it? Ancient Discoveries explores the amazing high
technology of the Classical World and asks why, with all
these incredible devices, the Industrial Revolution didn’t
happen two thousand years earlier. SBS Television 2003.
in the Second World War, the first mechanical ones
hundred years before that the Greeks had machines that
could do exactly the same things. This program takes
us back to the classical world of the third century BC to tell the stories
of three of the most important machines in history - Ctesibius’ clock,
invention of Heron of Alexandria. Beginning in the dark
recesses of an Egyptian temple we will witness the aweinspiring
operations of his ‘miracle machines’, from
automatic doors and magically suspended spheres, to
mechanical singing birds, coin-operated slot machines
and speaking statues - all designed to inspire wonder in the congregation
and provide revenue for the priests. But, greatest of all, was Heron’s
steam engine, a working device that was not only the first steam engine
in history but also the first jet engine.
