Support<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Otago</strong> is dedic<strong>at</strong>ed to the<br />

advancement <strong>of</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion among Mäori and<br />

has dedic<strong>at</strong>ed staff in most departments who<br />

act as department Mäori Liaison staff. The<br />

<strong>University</strong> also has the well-established Mäori<br />

Centre, which <strong>of</strong>fers support services for all<br />

students <strong>of</strong> iwi descent. The Centre aims to<br />

encourage Mäori to particip<strong>at</strong>e and succeed in<br />

tertiary educ<strong>at</strong>ion. The Centre <strong>of</strong>fers support<br />

for academic, cultural and social needs from<br />

pre-enrolment through to gradu<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>es from a kaupapa Mäori base (Mäori<br />

philosophy). The Mäori Centre will also give<br />

you the opportunity to meet other Mäori<br />

students and whanaunga studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>Otago</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Business</strong> <strong>School</strong> has strong links to the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Mäori Centre and are able to pay<br />

special <strong>at</strong>tention to Mäori students studying<br />

business through the services <strong>of</strong>fered by our<br />

Kaiärahi and Kaiäwhina Mäori (Mäori student<br />

support <strong>of</strong>ficers). Their role is to make your<br />

time in the <strong>Business</strong> <strong>School</strong> as productive and<br />

successful as possible.<br />

Our staff can help you with any questions you<br />

may have regarding your academic studies or<br />

any other support you may need. They can<br />

also provide inform<strong>at</strong>ion about on-campus<br />

services available to students. This inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

includes:<br />

• Scholarships/Grants<br />

• Mentoring support<br />

• Student support groups<br />

• Welfare Advice<br />

• Iwi/ Community networks<br />

• Divisional support<br />

• Peer study groups<br />

• Supplementary tutorials<br />

• Study skills and exam prepar<strong>at</strong>ion classes.<br />

Each department within the <strong>Business</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

has dedic<strong>at</strong>ed Mäori liaison staff, so if you have<br />

questions, need help, or want to meet other<br />

Mäori business students, help is never far away.<br />

In our teaching and research we are committed<br />

to developing a pro-active, co-ordin<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

approach to growing Mäori and Indigenous<br />

economies through a mix <strong>of</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ionship<br />

building, growing context aware students,<br />

curriculum development and seeking and<br />

realising research opportunities.
