LAKE-SUMTER
JUNIOR COLLEGE
Lake-Sumter Junior College was authorized
by the 1961 Florida legislature
as a result of the efforts of the
citizens and school officials in Lake
and Sumter Counties.
Temporary quarters for the college
were at first established on the Leesburg
High School campus, and instruction
began in the fall of 1962.
Our present, permanent site of 73
acres was provided by the city of
Leesburg. The initial construction began
in 1964 with the ground-breaking
ceremonies attended by Governor
Farris Bryant. Our modern facilities
totaling some 43,000 square feet were
first occupied in January of 1965 .
In the first year of operation there
were 17 full -time instructors and 367
students, both full and part time. In
the Fall of 1965 these figures had
soared to 47 full time instructors serving
some 942 full and part-time students.
Lake-Sumter Junior College is located
in the geographical heart of Florida,
midway between the cities of Leesburg
and Tavares, in Lake County. The
Lake County Board of Public Instruction
serves as the local, legal governing
body for the institution. In addition,
an advisory committee of nine citizens
from Lake and Sumter Counties makes
recommendations to the Board concerning
budgets, personnel and programs.
Additional buildings are planned to
serve a growing student body. Construction
will begin in the spring of
this year on an administration building,
gymnasium, and student center.

DEDICATED TO H. W. ASBELL - DEAN OF SERVICES
Dean Asbell was Principal of Naples Senior High School in Naples, Florida when he was
sought by President Williams to assist in the administration of the new Lake-Sumter Junior
College. He is the only dean who has been with the college since its inception.
A native of Florida, Dean Asbell holds degrees from Stetson and Florida State universities.
He is known for his able and efficient handling of registration and business matters, and for
his helpful, courteous manner. The Naiad Staff dedicates this annual to a dedicated man,

JOHNSON CENTER
Johnson Center is located in the northwest section of Leesburg at Carver Heights. The center was originally
named Johnson Junior College, and was authorized by the same act of the legislature which authorized Lake­
Sumter Junior College. Johnson started its operation in September of 1962 with two administrators, four full-time
faculty members and one hundred and ten students. Beginning with the faII semester of 1965, the two Leesburg
junior colleges were merged into one LAKE-SUMTER JUNIOR COLLEGE and were named respectively, Johnson
Center and Silver Lake Center
