Montana's 2012 Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals Champion
Welcome SHODAIR
Shodair Children's Hospital is
about to embark on another exciting milestone in its
116-year legacy of caring for Montana's children:
the ground breaking for Shodair Family House.
This beautiful new facility will function as an integral
part of our campus, providing a place for families to
stay while visiting their children in treatment here.
Shodair Family House will make it easier for them
to participate in intensive family therapy, learn more
about the Collaborative Problem Solving treatment
model we use, and begin the process of reuniting
their children with their families and communities.
Shodair Family House will also serve as a teaching
and education center. We know that active
participation of families in intensive therapy and
parenting classes is essential to recovery and longterm
independence for their children. Many families
we serve are poor and unable to travel to visit their
children and participate in family therapy. Few local
resources are available to assist them. Collaborative
Problem Solving is an approach built on the
philosophy that children succeed if they can—when
they are provided with appropriate skills to do so—
rather than if they want to. The same is true for
families. The creation of Shodair Family House
will facilitate the therapy, education, and support
provided to our families.
Additionally, Shodair Family House will be used as a
professional teaching and education center, offering
opportunities for other professionals to advance their
abilities in their own work with Montana's families.
Shodair Children's Hospital has been awarded a
challenge grant of $500,000 from the Montana
Mental Health Settlement Trust, with the provision
that we raise the additional matching funds necessary
for the construction of Shodair Family House. We
also received a “top off” grant from the M.J. Murdock
Charitable Trust in the amount of $225,000. So far,
we've raised a total of $1,117,005, which means we
need to raise an additional $159,195.
This project is significant to Shodair, one that will
greatly enhance our ability to carry out our vision
and mission. The funding for Shodair Family House
has come from many sources, including those who
have been long-time supporters of Shodair and its
work to serve children and families throughout
Montana. Each of us here at Shodair thanks you for
your continued support, and we look forward to
many more years of providing excellent care for
Montana's children.
Sincerely,
John P. Casey

Samantha Faulkner:
Montana's 2012 Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals Champion
Eyes on the
Future
Samantha Faulkner seems wise
beyond her ten years. It's not just her steady gaze
and intelligence that captivate
anyone who meets her; it's her
drive to succeed despite her
disabilities that make her a
remarkable girl. These are just
some of the qualities that make
Samantha Montana's 2012
Children's Miracle Network
Hospitals Champion. At one
month of age, Samantha was
diagnosed with collagenopathy,
thanks to the specialists in
Shodair Children's Hospital's
Medical Genetics Department. This
specialized team worked with the Faulkners to
clarify Sam's diagnosis and to help them set a treatment
plan in motion. In 2007, Sam was diagnosed
with an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT),
which reoccurred nearly a year later, and again last
year. The reccurances were monitored by Seattle
Children's Hospital and Samantha's local
pediatrician. IMT is a lifelong disease requiring
ongoing treatment.
Sam continues to be seen by Shodair's genetics team
at outreach clinics in Great Falls, a short distance
from her home in Ulm. Shodair's specialists
recently further refined Samantha's genetic diagnosis
to one of Stickler syndrome, a connective tissue
disorder that can include retinal detachment,
hearing loss, and mild precocious arthritis.
(See sidebar story for more details).
Samantha's connection to Shodair actually began
before she was born. Her mother, Erin, was seen by
the hospital's genetics specialists as a teen regarding
her short stature. Several years later, Erin was seen
again at Shodair for some answers regarding issues
with her vision, hearing, and joints, leading to a
diagnosis of Stickler syndrome for Erin as well.
Perhaps it's a combination of her family's medical
challenges and her empathy for others that are
driving Samantha's desire to become an OB/GYN
someday. “It would be interesting,” she explains in
her matter of fact way. “I like science, I like babies,
and I like doctors.”
As part of Samantha's
ongoing care, her treatment
team also includes
vision, hearing, and orthopedic
specialists. With
their help, she participates
in school and sports with
plenty of enthusiasm and a
few accommodations. In
addition to Sam wearing a
hearing aid in each ear,
her interpreter from the Montana School for the
Deaf and Blind helps her keep pace with what's
going on in her fourth-grade classroom at Lewis and
Clark Elementary in Great Falls. To participate in
soccer, Samantha trades her eyeglasses for contacts
and special goggles she calls “rec specs” in order to
minimize the chance of a detached retina occurring.
This young Champion is excited about what lies
ahead in the coming year as she serves as
Montana's Children's Miracle Network Hospitals
Champion, joining over 50 other young
ambassadors from across the nation participating
in the Champions program.
Samantha's selection will be officially announced
during a special event this spring at the Great Falls
Walmart, and in September, Sam and her family will
fly to Washington DC, where they'll meet champion
children from around the country.
Above: Erin and Samantha Faulkner are pictured here on
Samantha's tenth birthday. Both have been seen by Shodair's
genetics specialists for a condition called Stickler Syndrome. Right: An avid soccer player, Samantha gets a piggyback ride from
her dad, Byron, after a Minibolts game.
2 Reunion
There, the Champions will also tour the White
House and are tentatively scheduled to meet
President Obama. In addition to the White House
visit, the Champions will have a chance to visit
with their senators and representatives during a
luncheon on Capitol Hill.
From Washington, DC, Samantha, her family, and
the other Champion children will fly to Orlando,
where they will take part in the annual Children's
Miracle Network Hospitals Celebration. These
special ambassadors and their families will be
treated like royalty by Walt Disney World and
enjoy free access to all the resort's theme parks.
Samantha and the other special champions from
all 50 states and Canada represent children's
health care needs and hospitals that provide
critically-needed care to numerous young patients
every day. Children's Miracle Network Hospitals,
the alliance of premier hospitals for children, is a
non-profit organization dedicated to saving and
improving the lives of children by raising funds
for children's hospitals across North America.
Shodair has served the needs of Montana's
children for 116 years, and is one of the 170
premier children's hospitals included in the
Children's Miracle Network Hospitals alliance.
It is Montana's only Children's Miracle Network
Hospital, and the only facility in the state to offer
both residential and acute psychiatric treatment in
one location. In addition to specialized psychiatric
care for Montana children and adolescents,
Shodair provides comprehensive medical genetic
services to patients of all ages throughout the state.
You can support Shodair and Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals by contributing to the “May is
For Miracles” fundraising efforts of national
sponsors like Walmart, Sam's Club, and Costco.
And, be sure to watch the Shodair/Children's
Miracle Network telethon on your local Montana
CBS television station on Saturday, June 2
beginning at 4:00 pm. You'll learn more about
Samantha's inspiring story and her Shodair team.
Editor’s note: Permission was obtained to share Erin and
Samantha’s stories with our readers. Special thanks to the
Faulkners for allowing us to do so.
Katherine Berry, MS, CGC
Board Certified Genetic Counselor
What is
Stickler
Syndrome?
This genetic condition causes changes in
connective tissues, including the skeleton. At birth,
short length of the body, spine changes, cleft palate,
and flattening of the middle portion of the face may
be present. The face may have a “scooped out”
appearance, with small folds in the inner corners of
the eyes. Hearing loss, nearsightedness, cataracts,
and retinal detachment can also be features of
Stickler syndrome. Arthritis may occur at an earlier
age than usual, causing aches and pains in
young people.
Stickler syndrome occurs when there is a change
in one of five possible genes known to cause the
condition. It occurs in one per 7,500 – 9,000 births.
Only one or two babies with the condition are born
in Montana each year. The most common cause is a
changed collagen gene called COL2A1. When this
change is present, it's passed on at a 50% chance to
offspring, and may be seen in multiple generations.
This is known as “dominant” inheritance.
Some rarer genes which also cause Stickler
syndrome are “recessive,” meaning it takes two
copies of a gene change, one from each parent, to
cause the condition. In the recessive form, brothers
and sisters, not successive generations, are more
likely to be affected. Specialty laboratories can test
these genes if an individual appears to have
findings of Stickler syndrome.
This is a variable condition, meaning individuals
may be differently affected, even in the same
family. Depending on medical needs, care from
craniofacial specialists, orthopedists, therapists,
eye, hearing, and heart specialists may be
beneficial. Medical geneticists and genetic
counselors provide consultation throughout life,
including at reproductive age.
Tools of the Trade: Happy Children Seriously
Working on Communication Skills
Daylinda Q. Radley, MA, CGC-SLP
Here at Shodair Children's Hospital,
ongoing learning is definitely an important part of my
job to ensure I'm applying techniques that are
effective in helping our patients
make necessary gains. It's
also an excellent way to stay
innovative and current as I
continuously strive to use
tools and technology that are
relevant to today's generation.
Our patients who receive speech
therapy services
have the opportunity to use intervention
tools that target a variety
of needs. For example, the
speech pathologist and teacher
collaborative program on our
High Desert Unit, which is
home to our youngest patients, have now focused on
the introduction of Story Grammar Marker and Braidy:
The Story Braid in the classrooms. These are evidencebased
multi-sensory programs that entail the use of
manipulatives, a puppet, visual icons, and graphic
organizers that support the comprehension of literary
materials, promote oral language development and
enhance writing skills, to name a few of its benefits.
Needless to say, the younger kids have enjoyed the
arrival of Braidy the puppet as they learn about
character's emotions and settings while working on
their ability to recall details and re-tell the stories. The
older ones are noticeably defining characters more
elaborately and are starting to identify the "kick off
events" in each story.
The social stories and Behavior Mapping Strategy are
fast becoming one of the most popular intervention
methods used in the hospital. A few social stories have
now been thoughtfully and individually written for the
younger children and pre-adolescents at Shodair to
target specific social skills deficits that cause frequent
conflicts or that prevent them from being successful
in the classroom or community.
For example, “Jaime,” who has been struggling with
transitioning from activity to another, has a social
story entitled "Why I
Need to Follow a
Schedule," along with
use of visual timers and
visual schedules. These
strategies have gradually
helped Jaime follow her
schedule throughout the
day and understand
why it's important to
be on time.
The Behavior Mapping
strategy is frequently
used for older children
also exhibiting social
skills impairment in their small group and individual
therapy sessions. This graphic organizer has allowed
a teenager like “Mike” to understand why saying
verbally inappropriate things to peers can be harmful
not only to his reputation, but also to his relationship
with others. The Behavior Mapping strategy makes
abstract social concepts concrete by allowing kids
to see the direct correlation of their expected or
unexpected behaviors to others and its impact
to themselves.
Shodair Speech-Language Pathologist Daylinda Radley
demonstrates how to use Braidy: The Story Braid puppet.
Many of these tools are available at Shodair and
are used frequently to promote learning and the
development of skills necessary to be successful in
the real world. These intervention techniques are
definitely not magical in the sense that it makes all
our children's aches and problems disappear. It
does take fidelity of implementation, team effort,
and a lot of patience to reach a point of growth.
Having the adequate resources to continue
supporting the vast communication needs of our
patients makes the work worthwhile. It's also a
great way to make work feel a lot like play!
2011 Donors
Included:
Spring 2012
The holidays can be tough for the children and adolescents
who are in treatment at Shodair. As in years past, staff and donors gave
generously of their time and funds to make Christmas a bright one for our
patients, who range in age from four to seventeen.
Preparations began in early November, as staff from all units gathered wish
lists for Santa that identified items both practical and fun for each patient.
Despite difficult economic times, many individuals, businesses, and civic
organizations familiar with Shodair's mission once again made Christmas
possible for our patients by contributing gifts of toys, clothing, and quilts.
Gift cards and cash were also donated, allowing nursing
staff to shop for items just right for each child.
One the shopping was complete, staff from all corners of
the hospital volunteered to wrap presents. “During the
holidays, we feel especially blessed by the support we
receive from people all across Montana,” said
Community Relations and Marketing Director Anastasia
Burton. “Thanks to their generosity, we were able to
provide nearly 50 patients with Christmas stockings
and gifts, as well as the knowledge that there are many
people who care about them.”
The holidays were also filled with events to bring the
joy of the season to patients, starting with carols sung
by the Montana A Cappella Society from Hamilton. In the Children's
Classroom, the annual Holiday Read-In drew guest readers like Santa
himself. Helena's 89th Cavalry once again helped usher in the new year with
a visit to the hospital, delighting the children with an opportunity to interact
with the horses.
The generosity of the community had a ripple effect on patients, as they
looked for ways to make the holidays brighter for others. Adolescent patients
made crafts, selling the items to Shodair staff, then donating the money raised
to the local Humane Society. Younger patients caroled to Shodair staff
throughout the hospital under the guidance of music therapist Cheryl
Sobek. Shodair staff completed the circle of giving by adopting a local
Christmas family, providing them with food, clothing, and gifts.
Thanks to everyone who made the holidays brighter for Shodair's patients!
From the
Foundation
Director
Walter D. Long, Jr.,
Shodair Children’s Hospital
Foundation Director
Perhaps you've lived in your house
for many years. You've made improvements and
you're quite comfortable in your environment.
Retirement has given you more time to spend
working in your yard, planting flowers, and taking
care of your home.
Retirement has also given you time to think about
the legacy you'd like to leave to your favorite causes,
including Shodair Children's Hospital.
Your home has appreciated as a result of your
improvements and you'd like to remain there for
your retirement years. Your children or heirs have
homes of their own and don't want to take over the
maintenance of your home when you pass it to them.
You've decided that you can leave a legacy by
supporting Shodair through giving your home as a
gift to the hospital in your will. However, a gift in
your will does not provide any tax benefits to you
now. What if you could gift your home to Shodair
now, enjoy tax benefits from your gift, and live in
your home for the rest of your life?
You can.
Home,
Sweet Home
This article is intended to provide general gift planning information. Shodair Children's
Hospital and the Montana Children's Foundation are not qualified to provide specific legal,
tax, or investment advice, and this publication should not be looked to or relied upon as a
source for such advice. Consult your own legal and financial advisors before making any gift.
You can deed a personal residence, ranch or farm to
Shodair through a gift called a retained life estate.
The deed would outline the specifics, i.e., who is
responsible for what. For example, it would designate
that you and your spouse, as the property owners,
retain the right to live in or use the property for as
long as you wish. At the death of the second spouse,
the property becomes available to Shodair to sell or to
use in a manner that supports our mission.
What else takes place? Because this is a binding
transfer, you'll be entitled to a charitable income tax
deduction in the year you deed the property to Shodair
Children's Hospital. To calculate the amount of the
deduction, you'll need a qualified appraisal to
determine the property's fair market value. In addition,
the life expectancies of you and your spouse are taken
into consideration. The goal is to establish the amount
of the charitable gift you'll be making to Shodair—this
determines your charitable income tax deduction.
In contrast, if you gave the hospital this property
through a bequest in your will, there would not be a
charitable income tax deduction because your decision
is not binding—you can change your mind.
You and your spouse must maintain the property and
pay the costs such as insurance, property taxes, and
repairs. Thus, the operation of the retained life estate
is no different than ordinary ownership, except you
realize the immediate tax advantages that ownership
cannot provide.
If you'd like to have a no-obligation conversation
about this type of gift or other ways to support
Shodair Children's Hospital, please give me a call
at (406) 444-7560. Thanks for your support!
Shodair / Children’s Miracle Network Events & Activities
24th Annual
Shodair
Telethon
Coming up
June 2
14
The annual Shodair/Children's Miracle Network
Hospitals telethon is fast approaching. The broadcast, featured on CBS
television affiliates around the state, will air Saturday, June 2, starting at
4:00 p.m. and ending at 1:00 a.m. that evening.
The telethon has been a staple of Shodair fundraising events for many years.
The nine hour event is broadcast live from the hospital each year, and features
segments from the national Children's Miracle Network Celebration.
The event brings people together from around the state in an effort to
show and tell the story of the important work done at Shodair Children's
Hospital, and to introduce some of the patients and families whose
lives have been changed as a result of it. It's a labor of love for a broadranging,
caring group of people who work tirelessly to build support and
generate donations to ensure those vital services remain available.
Miss Montana 2011 Veronika Ohlinger and television personalities from
around the state will serve as on-air hosts. The 2012 Miss Montana
contestants will join them, as will area service groups and volunteers from
across the state who donate their time on the phone banks throughout
the day. Children's Miracle Network Hospitals corporate sponsors located
in Montana also take part, by volunteering or participating in check
presentations throughout the broadcast. Helena businesses donate food
to feed the hungry army, and hospital employees work overtime to ensure
the event is a success.
Samantha Faulkner, Montana's 2012 Children's Miracle Network
Hospitals Champion, will be featured, along with patients, families, and
Shodair staff who will share stories of challenges faced and triumphs
won over psychiatric and genetic conditions.
In addition to offering residents a chance to support Montana's only Children's
Miracle Network Hospital, the telethon is an opportunity for
Shodair to recognize and thank its many supporters. Donors
large and small are recognized on air for their important
contributions. Shodair is a non-profit hospital, and depends
on the help of all of its generous supporters—from Children's
Miracle Network Hospitals sponsors to individuals—who
donate what they can, when they can.
Tune in to your local CBS station on June 2, join the fun,
and support a truly worthwhile cause: Helping young
Montanans and their families by providing vital psychiatric
care and comprehensive medical genetic services close
to home.
Shodair's 13th Annual Soccer
Classic Kicks Off this Summer
Preparations are well underway for the thirteenth season of
the Annual Shodair Soccer Classic in Helena. The summertime favorite begins
mid-week with activities for players, and culminates with the men's and
women's games on Saturday, July 28 at Nelson Stadium on the
Carroll College campus in Helena. This year's event sponsors
include Pepsi, Walmart, and Montana State Fund.
The Classic features top student athletes from high schools all
across the state. Through a rigorous screening process, over
80 outstanding young men and women are selected to play
in the annual competition. In addition to having been
selected as All-State and All-Conference high school players
in Class AA or A, they have demonstrated academic
achievement, leadership, and citizenship. The Classic also
brings together a talented coaching staff from around the state
to guide the teams and assure top-level competition.
Players and coaches arrive at Carroll College on July 25 to begin
practice and a variety of other activities leading up to the games. The
high school players host aspiring young soccer all-stars
in a free clinic for children ages 5 to 12 on Friday
before the tournament. The event is especially
popular with area youth, with over 200 young
players typically participating.
The Soccer Classic is a benefit for Shodair
Children's Hospital and the important work
it does for children and adolescents from
communities throughout the state. Shodair
is a vital resource for young Montanans
struggling with mental health challenges,
and also serves as the state's medical genetics
program. Last year, the hospital provided more
than $3.3 million dollars in uncompensated care
for at-risk children and youth from around the state.
The hospital is proud to offer this opportunity for gifted youth
to pair athleticism with citizenship in an event where some of Montana's best
young athletes help some of its neediest children. Financial support generated
from events like the Soccer Classic and the Children's Miracle Network Telethon
help assure that critically-needed services remain available for young Montanans
in need of help.
Montanans Flip for Kids During IHOP's
Seventh Annual National Pancake Day
The numbers are in, and once again Montanans showed
their support for the patients at Shodair Children's Hospital during IHOP's
Seventh Annual National Pancake Day Celebration on February 28. The event,
which supports Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, raised nearly $6,700 in
Montana, all of which goes to Shodair Children's Hospital in Helena to aid its
patients and their families.
Walter Long, Shodair Foundation Director and Program Director for Children's
Miracle Network here in Montana said, “It was great to see people of all ages
take part in National Pancake Day. A big thank you IHOP managers, employees,
and customers for their generous support of the work we do here at Shodair.”
On National Pancake Day, Montana IHOP customers in Bozeman, Helena,
Kalispell, and Missoula enjoyed nearly 2,300 free short stacks of pancakes and
were invited to make a donation to the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
As Montana's only Children's Miracle Network hospital, all the money raised
stayed in-state to provide care for Shodair's patients.
IHOP Montana District Manager Rick Summers, said, “All of us at IHOP had
a great time raising money to help Montana's kids and we look forward to
raising even more next year.” He added, “Our thanks to Lt. Governor John
Bohlinger, Miss Montana Veronika Olinger, Miss Montana Teen USA Danica
Jansma, the Carroll College Fighting Saints, and Missoula Maulers mascot Slash
for taking part in some of the fun activities we had at our Montana restaurants.”
The fundraiser is a tie-in with Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, which has been
celebrated for centuries in England. Strict rules prohibited eating dairy products
during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, butter, and
other dairy products—hence the name Pancake Tuesday.
The Seventh Annual National Pancake Day raised
$2.7 million across the country; funds that will largely
benefit Children's Miracle Network affiliated hospitals
throughout the United States.
Coming soon: Montana's
First CMN Dance Marathon
Shodair is excited to announce the first ever Children's
Miracle Network Dance Marathon is set for November 9, 2012 in
Bozeman. Students from Montana State University are hosting the event.
Every year, on more than 150 campuses
nationwide, college students come together to
make miracles happen for kids. The entirely
student-run program donates 100 % of the funds
they raise directly to the Children's Miracle Network hospital in their
community—in this case, Shodair Children's Hospital. Dance Marathon
has become a tradition on campuses across the country and in their
surrounding communities.
So what exactly is a Dance Marathon? It's primarily a year-long effort
to support CMN hospitals. Students spend the year raising funds in
a variety of ways, planning the main Dance Marathon event, and
interacting with their local children's hospital.
Montana's Dance Marathon will begin at 6:00 pm on November 9th
and end at 11:00 am the following morning. The students will stay
awake and on their feet the entire stretch of time to celebrate the total
amount of funds raised this year. The event involves dancing, games,
and live entertainment in a fun, high-energy, healthy environment.
for Montana's kids through our upcoming CMN Dance Marathon,
Education Department
Update
At Shodair Children's Hospital, our goal is to
provide each child with an education that takes into
consideration the factors that resulted in his or her
admission to our facility. School at Shodair is
accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited
Schools; many people are surprised to learn that we
offer instruction year-round at the hospital. This
allows students an opportunity to work in academic
areas as needed to make up missed credits. Our
students receive recreation and music therapy, as
well as visits twice monthly by therapy dogs.
One way we try to enhance our curriculum is by
bringing speakers to the hospital to interact with our
patients. The Helena community has been very
generous in sharing its expertise, from R.E.A.D. dogs
to representatives of cultural observances like Black
History Month and Irish History Month.
Many of these enriching opportunities are arranged by
Shodair Librarian Margie McNellis, working closely
with the hospital's education and ancillary therapies
staff. Margie says, “Each presentation has brought
to life a history or activity that has helped our children
develop another view of the world and all the
potential that is theirs waiting to be developed. They
come away from the presentations with a sense of
awe: 'I didn't know that!' and now they do!”
Special thanks to presenters who have given of
their time and expertise to Shodair's kids!
Dr. Mark Ibsen from
Helena (shown here with
Jilly) and his team of sled
dogs visited Shodair on
February 10th. The kids
preparations for Race to
the Sky and meeting the
sled dogs.
In our last issue of Reunion, we announced
that generous grants from the Paddock Foundation
and the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation
enabled us to purchase four SMARTBoards for our
classrooms.
Recently,
wall-mounted
computers were
installed, allowing
our teachers to
begin training on
how to use the
new technology
with Shodair's
students. Our
education staff
has been using the
SMARTBoards to integrate lesson plans and
use them with existing software and the Internet.
Jennifer Marold, a teacher in one of the
Glacier (adolescent) Unit classrooms,
report is accessed using a SMARTBoard.
Students can use a wireless keyboard and a mouse,
or a touch screen. Shodair Director of Education
Pep Jewell says, “Activities like science labs are now
available to our students. Previously, they were
unavailable to them, as some of the materials required
can be used by patients to self-harm. SMARTBoards
are making a world of difference for our students.”
“Leigh has been steadfast in his commitment to
helping children and families,” said Shodair's
Director of Psychology, Laura Fuller, Ph.D. “He
puts CPS into practice on a daily basis and works
hard to keep it alive at Shodair, in the local
community, and in the state of Montana.”
Leigh earned his degree in psychology from
Texas A & M University and his graduate degree in
counseling and human services from the University
of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He has worked
at Shodair Children's Hospital for eight years.
Leigh is assigned to the hospital's High Desert
and Yellowstone Units, helping children ages
four through thirteen cope with diagnoses like
depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe
ADHD, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric
illnesses.
History
Shodair of
Shodair Children's Hospital began as
a home for orphaned and abandoned children in 1896.
Children were placed on northwest bound “orphan
trains,” with Helena as their final destination. The
Montana Children's Home and Hospital was organized
to care for those children not adopted along the way.
Our facility's name was changed in 1938 to honor
benefactor Louis W. Shodair.
As Shodair evolved to meet the needs of Montana's
children, it became the first facility in Montana to treat
children with polio, the first facility with a department
of medical genetics, and the first with a chemical
dependency unit dedicated to adolescents. Today,
Shodair offers child and adolescent psychiatric
treatment services, and laboratory and medical genetic
services for people of all ages.
New Hope for Montana's Children
In 1987, children's psychiatric units opened at Shodair;
services for adolescents were added in 1992, enabling
the hospital to treat children ages four to seventeen. In
1998, Shodair moved to its current larger facility on
Helena's east side, allowing us to serve more children,
many of whom are the victims of emotional, physical,
and sexual abuse. In 2006, Shodair addressed the
needs of high-acuity patients by opening a 20-bed
acute unit, making it the only facility in Montana to
offer child and adolescent acute care and residential
treatment under one roof.
Montana's Genetics Program
In 1976, the Montana Regional Genetics and Birth
Defects Program was moved from Boulder River
School and Hospital, and was headed by Dr. Phil
Pallister. Shodair was now positioned as the only
facility in Montana to offer a genetics department.
Three years later, Dr. John Opitz, renowned for his
work in medical genetics, joined Shodair and chaired
the hospital's Department of Medical Genetics. In
1987, the State of Montana began providing funding
to enable Shodair to continue helping families in need
of genetic services.
Today, Shodair's Genetics Department is nationally
renowned, and provides comprehensive services that
include genetic counseling, testing, and cancer risk
assessments for residents throughout the state. Three
medical geneticists and four genetic counselors hold
nearly 80 outreach clinics across Montana each year.
Access to over 100 telemedicine sites statewide
provides a gateway to genetic services for families in
need of these services. Additionally, Shodair offers
a full range of laboratory services, including pharmacogenetic
testing, as well as testing related to birth
defects, cancer, developmental and neurological
disorders, and blood disorders.
In 2007, Shodair Children's Hospital was awarded the
follow-up contract for newborn screening by the State
of Montana. Shodair helps ensure that newborns
receive appropriate initial care for any genetic
problems identified by screening performed on all
Montana infants by their local hospitals, serving as
a valuable resource for primary care providers and
families across the state.
A Commitment to the Future
Last year, Shodair provided more than $3 million
dollars in uncompensated care and services to
Montana's families, relying on contributions from
donors. Additionally, Shodair is Montana's only
Children's Miracle Network hospital, and receives
donors from sponsors throughout the state and
the nation.
For 116 years, Shodair Children's Hospital has
changed with the times and the needs of the families it
serves. While its programs have changed, its
mission of improving the
well-being of the children
in its care has left a lasting
legacy, touching the lives of
generations of Montanans.
