From the President<br />
I am pleased to present the<br />
2010-2011 <strong>Nicolet</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> Annual Report.<br />
During the year, the <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
continued its long-standing tradition<br />
of helping <strong>Nicolet</strong> <strong>College</strong> students<br />
attain their goals and dreams<br />
of getting a college education<br />
and also supporting other<br />
college endeavors designed to<br />
advance higher education in the<br />
Northwoods.<br />
Awarding scholarships is central<br />
to the <strong>Foundation</strong>’s mission,<br />
and I’m pleased to report that<br />
for the 2011-12 academic year<br />
the <strong>Foundation</strong> awarded 214<br />
scholarships valued at $198,870.<br />
These funds are especially<br />
important today as an increasing<br />
number of our students are<br />
experiencing financial difficulties<br />
as the result of the recent<br />
economic downturn. Without these<br />
scholarships, many students would<br />
not be able to attend college and<br />
earn the education that will help<br />
them get ahead in life.<br />
The 2010 A Day for <strong>Nicolet</strong><br />
fundraising event was one for the<br />
record books, raising $206,473!<br />
To date, A Day for <strong>Nicolet</strong> has<br />
raised more than $1.2 million.<br />
All of these funds are designated<br />
for student scholarships.<br />
In the past year, the <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
expanded the Board to 17<br />
members and in doing so added<br />
seven new members. They are<br />
Jim Wahner, Mercer; Linda<br />
Skallerud, Crandon; Nancy Prisk,<br />
Sugar Camp; and Jim Brown,<br />
Bob Martini, Jim Dyreby, and<br />
John Schiek, all from the<br />
Rhinelander area.<br />
The 2011 Friends and Partners<br />
Award was presented to the Lac du<br />
Flambeau Band of Lake Superior<br />
Chippewa Indians, honoring the<br />
band’s long-standing dedication to<br />
promoting education.<br />
The <strong>Foundation</strong> funded two<br />
Dr. Robert Steger Professional<br />
Development Awards and one<br />
Dr. Robert Steger Innovation<br />
Award. The Professional<br />
Development awards allowed<br />
<strong>Nicolet</strong> Graphic Design and Digital<br />
Media Arts instructor Daniel<br />
Goscha to get advanced training<br />
in encaustic art, and Medical<br />
Assistant instructor Candy Dailey<br />
to receive specialized training<br />
in administering medications in<br />
an intensive care setting. The<br />
Innovation Award helped fund a<br />
Lego Camp on the Rhinelander<br />
campus for students in first<br />
through sixth grades. During
the week-long event held last<br />
summer, 34 students from<br />
throughout the Northwoods<br />
participated in fun, hands-on<br />
activities that taught them basic<br />
engineering skills.<br />
In May, the <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
contributed $11,700 toward the<br />
purchase of the high-tech patient<br />
simulator known as Meti-Man.<br />
This computerized mannequin<br />
will allow countless health<br />
occupation students to practice<br />
treating numerous medical<br />
conditions in a safe environment.<br />
As you can see, it has been an<br />
exciting and productive year for<br />
the <strong>Nicolet</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />
The generosity I’ve witnessed<br />
during the past year has been<br />
truly inspiring and I want to<br />
extend my sincere gratitude to<br />
everyone who has supported<br />
the work of the <strong>Foundation</strong>.<br />
By supporting higher education,<br />
the <strong>Foundation</strong> is helping<br />
individuals realize their goals<br />
and dreams. As a result, these<br />
scholarship recipients are the very<br />
individuals who will bring their<br />
skills to area communities and help<br />
build a stronger Northwoods.<br />

Friends and Partners Award<br />
The <strong>Nicolet</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> named the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake<br />
Superior Chippewa Indians as the recipient of its 2011 Friends and Partners<br />
Award, honoring the band’s long-standing dedication to promoting education.<br />
“Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe education staff, its enterprises and its leaders<br />
have gone above and beyond in their efforts to work with <strong>Nicolet</strong> to bring<br />
education to their community,” wrote <strong>Nicolet</strong> staff in nominating the tribe.<br />
“The relationship between the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe Nation and <strong>Nicolet</strong><br />
<strong>College</strong> has been good for the college, good for the tribe, and generations<br />
of students have benefitted.”<br />
Accomplishments have included establishing a <strong>Nicolet</strong> classroom in tribal<br />
facilities in Lac du Flambeau, creating a Tribal Management academic certificate,<br />
working cooperatively to allow <strong>Nicolet</strong> students to gain professional experience<br />
in tribal enterprises, offering GED and HSED classes in Lac du Flambeau, and<br />
establishing academic pathways for Lac du Flambeau students to earn their<br />
two-year associate degree from <strong>Nicolet</strong> and then transfer to a four-year college<br />
or university to earn a bachelor’s degree.<br />
