incomplete. The first part of it is addressed to unc'tlano'Ji, the<br />

Sun, one of the greatest divinities of the Cherokee pantheon.<br />

The two spirits called upon in the second paragraph are not named,<br />

evidently through forgetfulness in writing out the formula, but they<br />

are probably the Two Thunder Boys, or Little Men.<br />

The medicine used is a decoction of the roots of u'yo*'Dali^ vstf'aa<br />

GaDv'seli, Iris verna L., dwarf iris; i;'yo*'Dali usti^'aa a^mayu''lt'e!i,<br />

Acorus calamus L., sweet flag, calamus; u*Da''.i ustf'ca. Clematis<br />

virginiana L., virgin's bower, together with chips of the stalk of<br />

i;*Da"'.i y't'ano'", Aristolochia macrophylla Lam., pipe vine, Dutchman's<br />

pipe.<br />

The decoction is drunk by the patient after the formula has been<br />

recited by the medicine man. The ceremonial [administration] takes<br />

place two or four times, but the patient drinks the medicine at intervals<br />

as often as desired, abstaining from other food or drink in the mean-<br />

time. There is no bathing or blowing of the medicine.<br />
