www.salzburg.info/euro2008

UEFA EURO 2008 – Salzburg
A culture city in football fever
Where football stars will contend in the midst of unparalleled architectural beauty.
Greece, the defending champion will play against Sweden, Russia and Spain in the
Host City of Salzburg on June 10, 14 and 18.
Salzburg will celebrate a virtual Football Festival together
with Europe‘s leading teams and thousands of
fans from around the world in its architecturally enchanting
Old City from June 7 to 29, 2008. Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart was a great player and certainly
would have been an avid observer of the UEFA EURO
2008 in his home town. Nowhere else do sports and
culture live in such a strong symbiosis. A powerful encounter
between an experienced host and the world.

A city of worldwide fame
A walk through the city surrounded by the Mönchsberg,
Festungsberg and Kapuzinerberg exudes history at
every turn while offering stunning views of the modern
world. The city‘s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, still draws music fans from around the world.
Salzburg owes its international fame to the baroque
charm of its cityscape, prompting UNESCO to declare its
Stage of the World
The harmonious interaction between landscape and architecture, art and culture,
traditional and modern is rarely found so close together.
historical city center a World Heritage Site. The Salzburg
Festival with its world-famous staging of ”Everyman“ is
one of the most prestigious music festivals in Europe.
Hollywood also left its traces in the city. ”The Sound of
Music“ was filmed on location in the city of Salzburg
and its immediate environs. The filming locations can
still be visited today.

Salzburg – Stage of the World!
Salzburg is a many-faceted cultural city, offering interesting insight and spectacular
vistas all year round with playful ease.
In Salzburg the culture year featuring approx. 4,000
events begins with the internationally renowned Mozart
Week. Music fans look forward to orchestral concerts
with the Camerata Salzburg and Mozarteum Orchestra
at the end of January. The high-caliber Easter and Whitsun
Festivals are on Salzburg‘s spring program. In addition
to the Summer Festival with its cache of celebrities, the
city also offers contemporary culture at the Sommerszene
and a number of galleries and exhibitions. When
golden autumn opens its gates, Salzburg launches its
Jazz Festival featuring international music stars in the
Old City. The peaceful time of the year is ushered in by
Salzburg Advent Singing in the Large Festival Hall.
attracted travelers from around the world since time
immemorial and the city has not lost any of its charm
to this day.
Stage of the World

to present the multitude of
opportunities available in the
practiced here for years sur
rounded by a magnificent
mountain panorama and lush
alpine pastures. Join us for a
memorable experience in the
ALEXANDER ZICKLER, CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER AND UEFA EURO 2008 TM
AMBASSADOR, IS AMAZED AT THE SPORTS FACILITIES AVAIL ABLE IN THE SALZ
BURGERLAND. THE SALZBURG RESIDENT BY CHOICE HAS APPRECIATED THE
INCOMPARABLE SCENERY, THE WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITIES AND THE DEEP
UNDERSTANDING OF SPORTS AND HOSPITALITY FOR YEARS.
What opportunities will the UEFA
EURO 2008 TM open up for football
in Austria?
Alexander Zickler: I don’t think the
opportunities will merely be available
during the European Championship but
even more so after the mega-event. The
2006 World Championship in Germany
is an impressive example of the lasting
euphoria an event of this magnitude can
have. The UEFA EURO 2008 TM will be a
unique opportunity for Austria to
demonstrate its abilities as a perfect
host.
Why did you decide to live and work in
the SalzburgerLand?
Alexander Zickler: For one, I was al ready
familiar with the SalzburgerLand and
always loved being here. Besides,
after my third serious injury my doctor
also happened to live in Salzburg.
Red Bull Salzburg was just getting off
the ground at the same time. I’m quite
happy here and really feel comfortable.
My two boys are in kindergarten, my
daughter is in high school and all three
have adjusted very well.
Who do you think will win the European
Championship in 2008?
Alexander Zickler: Personally, my favo-
rite final match would be Switzerland vs.
Austria! Of course I hope the Austrian
team gets as far as possible. To make it to
the quarter or semifinals would be a
sensational result!

THOSE LOOKING FOR SHARP CONTRASTS WILL BE ABLE TO ESCAPE
BETWEEN THE UEFA EURO 2008TM GAMES. SAVOR THE EXTRA TIME
BETWEEN RUSTIC ALPINE HUTS AND GENTLY GRAZING CATTLE!
Diving in the context of football does not bode well. Diving into adventure
in the SalzburgerLand however is one of the advantages of the Almsommer.
And it has plenty to offer: no other region has as many alpine pastures
and serviced, certified mountain huts as the SalzburgerLand.
Hikers are pampered with Salzburg specialties such as Kasnocken (cheese
noodles), Brettljause (cold cuts and cheese) and Kaiserschmarren (shredded
pancake) on the 550 alpine pastures. Benches beckon to come rest in the
sun. Gazing up at the circling jackdaws almost has a meditative effect.
Those with a more active itinerary in mind have unlimited access to adventure:
80 percent of the pastures can be reached on foot in 90 (to 120) minutes.
And those who prefer a slower pace can take to one of the hiking trails
through the SalzburgerLand: the 350-kilometer Salzburger Almenweg winding
through the mountains in the Pongau region crosses more than 120 alpine
pastures in 31 stages.
