General information
The region of Nitra is in the southwestern
portion of Slovakia and borders Hungary.
The regions of Trnava, Trencin, and
Banska Bystrica surround it. Its climate is
typical lowland – with warm weather that
promotes it for agricultural production.
The largest river in Slovakia, the Vah, flows
through the region and joins the Danube
in Komarno. The Hron River joins the
Danube in Sturovo. Another important
river of the region is the Nitra.
The region is composed of seven districts:
Nitra, Komarno, Levice, Nove Zamky,
Sala, Topolcany, and Zlate Moravce.

Economy
The Nitra region is characterised with
both types of production, industrial
and agricultural. The most important
industrial sectors are machinery, chemical
and food. The latter is the oldest and
most widespread sector of the region.
Certainly, it is closely connected with
agricultural production. The food industry
is spread almost evenly throughout
the region. Other industries have a specific
character because they are concentrated
in various cities, which result in
a specific production focus. For example,
Sala is a centre of the chemical industry,
Komarno of the shipbuilding industry,
Tlmace of machinery, and Sturovo of
paper-mill industry. Only the industry of
the city of Nitra is diversified. The region
has the best climatic conditions for
agricultural production of the entire
country. Its mild and dry weather and
high-quality land provide exceptional
conditions for the growing of grain and
corn. The region is famous because of
its quality wines.

Generation of GDP
• The region created 11.53% on the total
GDP in year 2000 that represents the
amount of 102,264 million SKK (third
place of all regions).
• Agriculture has a higher than the
average regional share of GDP –8.1%
(total share of agricultural production
on generation of GDP in the country is
4%), which is due to an extended
agricultural production in southern
districts of the region.

the Nitra region has played an important
role in the historical development of the
country and in international relationships.

Of great importance for the development
of the Nitra region is its “Danube settled
stripe” and the Danube as a waterway.
The location of the region is unique
because it lies on the Danube and
between two European capital cities –
Budapest and Vienna.
Water pipes are installed in 264 municipalities,
i.e. 76% of population is supplied
from public water systems. There are 45
water treatment facilities in the region.
46% of population use public sewage
system.
Secondary schools
The region has several secondary grammar
schools providing general education
and technical and vocational schools
specialising in agriculture, health care,
gardening, services and food-processing.
Also, there are a hotel academy, music
school and secondary school of applied
arts in the region. A list of technical and

The city of Nitra is situated among the
hills of Zobor (elevation of 587 m),
Kalvaria (215 m), and Sibenicny vrch
(218.5 m), which form part of the Tribec
Mountains. It is located on the southeast
of the Danube Lowlands. The city area
has a size of 4,083 ha. of which 194 ha.
is settled. The city altitude varies from
138 m to 587 m above sea level.
The city of Nitra has a well-diversified
business portfolio. The most important

LEVICE
The city is located in the eastern part
of the Danube Lowlands, in a shallow
valley of Hron. The Ipel and Stianvicke
Mountains surround it. The altitude
of the city centre is 163 m. The altitude
of the entire city area varies between
152 m and 273 m above sea level. The
climate is mild and dry.

ZLATE MORAVCE Basic information
Age structure
The first written record of Zlate Moravce
is from the year 1113. The city is one
of seven district centres of the region.
It is surrounded with the Tribec
Mountains and Pohronsky Inovec mountains.
It is spread on both banks of the
Zitava River, ranging in the altitude
of 170 to 714 m above sea level.
