Additionally, the City has been instrumental in the revitalization of Downtown
with conversion of the Downtown Mall into the “Market Street Promenade.” This
project included the removal of the mall roof in June 2009, marking the end to a
project that saw the Redevelopment Agency partner with property owners in the
area to weatherize and improve their facades. The total cost of the roof removal
and storefront improvements was $2.5 million. The Shasta County Economic
Development Corp. is actively seeking tenants, including a Fortune 500 company
with the potential for 300 jobs.
In 2009, IASCO, an airplane contract crew and training company, won a contract to
host flight training for Chinese Airlines student pilots. Two classes of nearly 30
students came to Redding in 2009; by 2012, the number is expected to grow to
132 students. Students spend 12 to 14 months in Redding. IASCO operates a fleet
of 17 aircraft based at the Redding airport and employs 20 flight instructors.
The following description of the area’s tourist attractions reflects the variety of
activities that draw leisure travelers to the Redding area.
� The 100-acre Redding Big League Dreams Sports Complex, which opened in
2004, features three-fourths replicas of three major league baseball parks, two
additional ballparks, an all-weather, 20,000-square-foot indoor field house, a
sports restaurant, four sand volleyball courts, five soccer fields, a batting cage,
and parking for 400 cars. The complex is a major draw year-round for
tournament teams from around Northern California, as well as a major
destination for local residents and tourists.
� The Shasta Caverns began forming over 250 million years ago in the massive
limestone of the Grey Rocks visible from Interstate 5. The caverns, located off
the Shasta Caverns/O'Brien exit, are privately owned and tours are offered
year-round.
� The Redding Aquatic Center, located proximate to the Sacramento River and
just west of Route 273, features one recreation pool with zero-depth “walk-in”
entry and an Olympic-sized competition class swimming pool, as well as a 160foot
water slide and diving boards. The center also features a new change
house, a sand volleyball court, and a full-service concession stand. The aquatic
center provides ample space for social events and parties, as well as bench and
park settings for company picnics and banquets. The aquatic park is located in
Caldwell Park.
� The Kool April Nights, which showcases classic cars and the music of the
1950s and 1960s, is held for four days in April; an estimated 2,000 vehicles
participate in car shows, a parade, and general cruising around the town. The
event draws over 10,000 people, and hotels in the area regularly sell out a year
in advance for the event.
