Year 7 Zoo Excursion
In the middle of Week 6, our Year 7 students were taken on a Science excursion to Perth Zoo as part of their learning
in Biology. They were given a mission to complete an excursion booklet, which comprised a set of questions that
needed answers from the visit itself. Surprisingly, the weather held up for us, and it ended up being a gorgeous day
for everyone.
Thank you to all the Year 7 students for being great representatives of Murdoch College on the day and also to Mrs
Jensen and Mr Quan for joining us on this excursion.
Stage 3 Biological Science students conducted a “Fossil Dig” using archaeological techniques recently. The students
were required to unearth their fossils and then, if broken, place them together again.
Open Day
At our Term 3 Open Day, on Wednesday this week, the College was buzzing with activity that included Music and
Drama performances, cooking classes, a display of student Art and fabric creations, a Media Studies presentation,
photographs and stories of student engagement in their learning, and many examples of models and student work
done during assignments and class activities in History, English, Mathematics, and more. The students and staff
hosted and escorted visitors from 17 families during the day; and everyone mingled during a morning tea where
guests were invited to sample the delicious quiches that had been made during an earlier Foods class. One guest
family provided us with this wonderful feedback:
“The students who helped out on the tour were a credit to themselves, their parents and Murdoch College. They were
knowledgeable, respectful and confident. They approached us on several occasions to initiate discussion and they
showed a genuine interest in our attendance. The professionalism and passion of the Principal, Director of Teaching
and Learning, Director of Pastoral Care, and Admissions Director shone through during their welcoming addresses to
visitors; and I genuinely felt that they and the teaching staff had a desire to deliver the best possible outcomes for
their students.”
The day ended with a sausage sizzle provided to all guests, staff and students by the College Canteen, assisted by
volunteer students.
A big “Thank You” goes to ALL staff and students who worked on the planning and preparation for, and participated
in, this successful event. Also, a very special thank you goes to the following students for their assistance in
welcoming guests and guiding tours: Jacob Crook, Erin Anthony, Nina Brown and Elle Southgate – you are great
representatives of our student body and demonstrated our values of Honour, Integrity and Respect.
Parents & Friends News
Last Monday evening the P&F met and had robust discussions on a number of topics. Even though the weather was
rough, parents braved the cold and wet to attend. The P&F has run a successful campaign to raise funds for funky
furniture for the students to encourage them to work and relax in groups. They are now ready to invest in some
furniture and we look forward seeing students using it.
The topic of school dress was raised and the majority of parents at the meeting were positive about the uniform,
encouraging their children to wear it properly, with pride.
The Graduation Ceremony was raised by several parents who expressed specific desires regarding the event. We
welcome parent input and feedback for all of our events.
From the Director of Teaching and Learning
Due to technical difficulties the subject selections for 2013 have been delayed. I can assure you that Year 10 and 11 students will
know of their selections by the end of next week. I will meet the Year 10 students during LEAP and the Year 11 students who have
changed subjects, where the change does not fit the grid. All other Year 11 students will receive their course selections via the
TAG folder.
I will release the Year 12 Mock Examination Timetable in the near future; and each student should receive their
individual WACE timetable from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. WAUPP timetables will be released soon after.
Please contact me if you have any concerns on course selections or examinations
