THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
Reflecting on Humility on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Deacon Jim McKenzie
What it means to be humble can be one of those touchy subjects.
We are often called as Catholics to act out of a sense of humility, but
we have a hard time determining what that is supposed to look like in
our lives. Many people believe that humility is a sign of weakness.
But the Baptism of the Lord shows us that humility can be a great
spiritual gift and a source of true power in our lives. Humility has
nothing to do with weakness and sometimes it’s hard for us to discern
what humility has to do with our relationship to God. In order to do
that we have to first be sure what we are talking about when we use
the term humility.
Humility has nothing to do with being forced into some sort of
submission and hopelessness and being expected to accept someone
else having power over us. Genuine humility shown to us in the Baptism
of Jesus is not self-conscious, self centered, and it is far from
being weak. Genuine humility represents the greatest source of true
power available to us.
Humility becomes this great source of power for us only when we
see humility as obedience to God. John the Baptist was constantly
directing attention away from himself and toward the one who was to
come. John shows us the true power of humility in his obedience to
Jesus’ request to baptize him. When Jesus ask John to baptize him
John said, “No I need to be baptized by you” but Jesus tells John, “No
you baptize me for that is way we will do all that God requires.”
Because Jesus is obedient to what requires of him, so John is obedient
to Jesus and baptizes him. John Baptizes Jesus in humility and obedience.
Jesus did not insist that John baptize him so that Jesus could
repent of his own sinfulness. He insisted John baptize him because he
saw that baptism as a dedication to the mission the father had set
before him. Baptism for Jesus was an act of humility and obedience
to God. Jesus shows us that humility IS obedience to God.
In fact, humility really makes little sense at all unless we
understand it in relation to God. Humility, as we see in Jesus, is
primarily concerned with our relationship to God, and spiritually
transforming. Unlike Jesus we are not capable of perfect humility, but
that doesn’t mean we can’t understand what a perfect humility to God
looks like. Perfect humility would be a complete willingness, in all
times, in all places, to find and do the will of God. Our quest for a
perfect humility should begin with prayer in the morning asking God
for the guidance and will to follow him in all aspects of our lives
throughout this day. Our quest for a perfect humility should end with
an inventory of our successes in following that will, and a prayer of
thanksgiving for the successes in showing God our humility through
our obedience. Our quest for a perfect humility will always lead us to
better relationships in our lives, for we cannot seek the will of God
and be anything but honest, respectful and caring with others.
Our quest for a perfect humility will not be an attitude that others
see in us, but rather a spiritual condition that leads us to seek and do
the will of God. Our quest for a perfect humility will lead us to a
spiritual reorientation, with a gift of perfect freedom that can only
come from obedience to God.
Our prayer is that in the frailty of our human condition, we can
stand humbly before God, see his will, answer with obedience, and
enjoy the greatest source of true power in our world – HUMILITY.

ROOM IN THE INN
Page 5
The Room in the Inn program is a winter shelter program for the homeless. The
Cathedral hosts 30 to 40 homeless men every Tuesday evening from November through
March. We give them a warm place to sleep, a hot dinner, breakfast, and a sack lunch. We
also provide showers, clean underwear and socks, toiletries, and movies for them to watch.
We would like to thank all the volunteers who have given their time, food, clothing, money etc. to get us through the
first couple of months. The men who stay with us are so grateful for a hot dinner and a warm place to sleep as well as the
other items we try to provide.
There are a couple of areas where we really need additional help. Clothing items are in short supply. Boxers, t-shirts and
long underwear are definitely needed. Large, Extra Large and 2X cover the most demand. If you pick up a package(s) of any
of these you can drop them by the Fleming Center on Tuesday nights or leave them in the boxes in the Narthex. Other items
such as coats/jackets, shirts, pants, socks, shoes, gloves and hats are also always needed.
We also need innkeeper volunteers to stay the night with our guests. Being an innkeeper has given me the opportunity to
get to know many of our guests and to begin to understand the challenges they face and how important Room In The Inn is
to them. Please feel free to contact me, Dave Bevis, at 615-483-3001 or dave@davebevis.com if you would like to volunteer
or know more about being an innkeeper.
Other volunteer opportunities include driving to pick up and drop off our guests (drivers especially needed for early
Wednesday mornings), setting up and serving dinner, providing dinners, lunches and breakfast, laundering sheets and pillow
cases and more.
Please consider helping with the Cathedral's Room In The Inn program. Thank you and God Bless.
To volunteer please contact Joji Javier at mjoji_javier@yahoo.com or (916) 580-7181, Jim Namie at 615-476-9164 or
jim-namie@comcast.net, Dave Bevis at 615-483-3001 or dave@davebevis.com
Fr. Ed and the Room in the Inn crew would like to thank all of the volunteers
that helped make this a Merry Christmas for our 41 guests.
The Cathedral Room in the Inn program hosted our homeless guests on both Christmas Eve and Christmas night. On
Christmas Eve we set up on the 3rd floor of St. Albert hall. Terri, Pat, Hailee, Jade, and Trey Sells; Wes, Taylor, Blair, and
and Mario Canido Set up air mattresses and handed out back packs, provided by the Cathedral Women's Group, and served
our 12 guests who were very appreciative of the the stuffed back packs. They enjoyed a great dinner provided by
Lauren, Michael, Emma, Davis, and Frances Luster; Traci, Todd, Oovia, and Miles Smith;Cfeder; Bettye Giles; Allison,
Ckharlotte, and Casey Hassett; and Buddy and Mary Jo Dortch. Dave Bevis and Patrick Davis stayed the night with our
guests and cleaned up and drove our guests back downtown. Breakfast and lunches were provided by the Room in the Inn
crew.
On Christmas night Donna Nix, Mary Jane Fernandez, Ljerka andAnton Rasmussen, Raques, Abraham, and Sinead
Villegas, Mario Caudio, Jackson and Jane Brownlee helped put up the chairs set up for Midnight Mass, in the Fleming
set up the Fleming Center with the mattresses and setup tables and chairs. When our 29 guests arrived they handed out back
packs which was very appreciated by our guests and then served them dinner. The Silverthorn's, Roger, Sue, Lindsey and
