I
want to express a very warm welcome to the
graduates, families and friends who join us today.
Convocation is the University’s most important
ceremony, for it is here that we celebrate the
accomplishments of our students and the contributions of their
loved ones to their success. You should be proud of this day,
and of the commitment and sacrifi ce that it represents.
We at the University of Saskatchewan salute you—our graduates—and we extend to you our very
best wishes for the future. We hope that you will stay in touch with us through our University of
Saskatchewan alumni family, and that we will have the opportunity to welcome you ‘home’ to our
campus many times in the years ahead.

2005 Spring Convocation
The word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con”
meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to
call.” Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together
of the new graduates of the University of Saskatchewan,
symbolizing the historical practice of calling together all
former graduates. In current times, the major functions
of Convocation are the election of representatives
to University governing bodies and the admission
of candidates to degrees. The Chancellor, elected by
Convocation as its Chair, is the highest offi cial and
spokesperson of the University.
The Convocation ceremony marks the transition from
the role of student to the holder of a degree with its
accompanying rights and privileges. Candidates for degrees,
known as graduands, having completed the requirements
of a course of study, are recommended by college faculties
and the University Council to receive degrees from the
University of Saskatchewan.
The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of the
University community and family and friends of the
graduands, consists of three parts: a procession marking
the leaving of the old status and entering the new; the
President’s statement to the graduands, the Secretary’s petition and the Chancellor’s consent for their
admission; followed by individual presentation by their Dean and admission by the Chancellor to the
degrees to which they are entitled. As graduates are admitted to their degrees, a graduation hood, which
has a colour symbolizing a particular degree, is placed over each graduate’s head. A banner displaying the
University crest is hung above the stage, as a symbol of the University’s authority to confer degrees.
Following the conferring of degrees and acceptance of each graduate as a member of Convocation, a
reception is held—a celebration on the occasion of the formal transition from the role of learner to the role
of producer and contributor in the fi eld of the graduate’s choice.

The Chancellor
W. T. (Tom) Molloy
om Molloy was born and raised in Saskatoon. He
T attended St. Thomas More College and later the College
of Law, both at the University of Saskatchewan. He received
his B.A. and LL.B. in 1964. He has practiced law in Saskatoon
since graduation and is with MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman’s
Saskatoon offi ce. He has represented the Government of
Canada as the Chief Federal Negotiator in the successfully
concluded treaties in Nunavut and with the Nisga’a in
British Columbia and an Agreement in Principle with the
Sechelt Indian Band. He presently represents Canada in treaty
negotiations in British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Nunavut. Mr. Molloy
has been described as “Canada’s most expert treaty negotiator.”
Mr. Molloy recently authored a book The World is our Witness: The Historic Journey of the Nisga’a into
Canada. The book has won two Saskatchewan Book Awards, The Brenda MacDonald Riches First Book
Award and the Non-fi ction Award which was sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan.
For his work in the community he has received a number of awards including the City of Saskatoon
Certifi cate of Distinguished Community Service, Rotary Golden Wheels Award for Excellence, Saskatoon
B’nai Brith “Proud of You Award” and the Head of the Public Service Award for Excellence in Service
Delivery.
In 1996 he was made an Offi cer of the Order of Canada, with a citation that reads: He is widely known for
his role as Chief Negotiator for the Government of Canada in the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement. His
integrity, commitment to a just settlement and personable rapport have also been valuable in his leadership
of numerous cultural, educational and charitable groups, not only in Saskatchewan but also nationally,
including the Meewasin Foundation and PRIDE Canada.
The University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association awarded him the 2000 Alumni Honour Award in
recognition of receiving notable acclaim for professional achievements, which in turn has enhanced the
image of the University of Saskatchewan and its alumni. In January 2001, The Canadian Bar Association
Saskatchewan Branch named him as the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award.

History of the University of Saskatchewan
he University of Saskatchewan was established by the University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18
T months after Saskatchewan became a province.
The people of the province, as well as their government, were instrumental in shaping the new University.
The provincial government requested all residents who were graduates of a Canadian or British university
to form the fi rst Convocation and elect the University’s Senate. The Senate, in turn, elected fi ve members
to the fi rst Board of Governors, while the province appointed three. In 1908, the Board selected Professor
Walter Charles Murray, of Dalhousie University, as the fi rst President.
Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909, in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the
campus began in 1910 and the fi rst buildings were occupied in the fall of 1912. They included the College
Building (Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall (a student residence), residences for the Dean of
Agriculture and the President, a laboratory for Engineering and a number of farm buildings.
From the beginning, the University established an emphasis on research and teaching in a context of
community service, and encouraged co-operation among departments and divisions in tackling common
problems. The development of rust-resistant strains of wheat, for example, initiated by the University and
federal and provincial research agencies, has been of untold value to the prairie economy.
In 1909, the University had 70 students and fi ve professors, including the President. Today there are over
19,000 students studying in 13 colleges and one school. This is the only university in Canada with fi ve
health-science colleges and a major teaching hospital on the same campus. The University offers
Spring & Summer terms, evening courses, Independent Studies courses and distance education as well as
on-campus daytime courses.
The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the South Saskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. The
campus itself is 147 hectares; a research park, the University farm and experimental plots make up the
remainder.
Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothic in style and are constructed in a local dolomite,
popularly known as greystone. Subsequently constructed buildings also have greystone, as well as Tyndall
stone (pre-cut slabs quarried in Tyndall, Manitoba), concrete, brick, glass and aggregate facings.
The University offers many points of interest for visitors: the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum of
Natural Sciences, Museum of Antiquities, Biology Museum, Pharmaceutical Museum, the Observatory, the
Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the St. Thomas More Gallery, Rugby Chapel, the Little Stone Schoolhouse, the
Memorial Gates, Patterson Garden and the Kenderdine Gallery.

Honorary Doctor of Letters
Allan Fotheringham
native of Hearne, Saskatchewan, Mr.
A Fotheringham has been a columnist for the
better part of his nearly half century in journalism.
His fi rst job was as a journalist at
the Vancouver Sun, in 1954, after
completion of a B.A. in English and
Political Science, UBC. He later
settled in on Fleet Street for two
years with Reuters and Canada News
but returned in 1959 to become an
editorial writer and columnist for the
Vancouver Sun. Before long he was
making a name for himself not only
in British Columbia but nationally
when his column was syndicated
across the country. He later worked
as a columnist for Southam News,
The Financial Post, The Globe and
Mail and Sun Media.
Well known to most Canadians,
he occupied the prestigious
“back page” of Maclean’s for more than a quarter
century creating the reverse-reading or “back page
fi rst” phenomenon. During the Reagan and Bush
administrations, Southam News assigned “Dr. Foth”,
then its national columnist based in Ottawa, to a
fi ve-year stint in Washington, D.C., which allowed
his razor-sharp political observations to impact both
sides of the border.
Between 1972 and 2001, he authored eight books
all following political themes with Malice in
Blunderland his fi rst best seller. In addition to
his many appearances on radio and television
news-based programs, he was a panelist for 10 years
on Front Page Challenge.
The recipient of many awards for his talents with
the written word, Mr. Fotheringham was awarded
the 1964 Southam Fellowship in Journalism. He
was the 1980 recipient of the National Magazine
Award for Humour and that year was also accorded
the honour of becoming the
fi rst recipient of the National
Newspaper Award for column
writing. In 1999, he was inducted
in the Canadian News Hall of
Fame and in 2002, he received the
Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for
signifi cant contribution to fellow
Canadians. That year he was also
presented with the prestigious
Bruce Hutchison Lifetime
Achievement Award sponsored by
the Jack Webster Foundation.
Mr. Fotheringham’s contribution to
Canadian life has been substantial
to say the least. He has infl uenced
the political process, the way we as
Canadians view ourselves and he has insisted that
we not take ourselves too seriously. His political
commentary laced with humour helped awaken
many Canadians to the political and democratic
processes and helped all of us to look at things
“outside the box”, a place where Mr. Fotheringham
has always thrived.
In addition to all of his remarkable
accomplishments, Mr. Fotheringham rarely misses
an opportunity to promote Canada and Canadian
values in far-fl ung locations around the world.
He has also supported and lent his name to many
worthy causes including the Prostrate Cancer
Foundation and the Stephen Leacock Foundation
which assists underprivileged children, and
recently the Government House Heritage Property
Centennial Project in Regina.

Honorary Doctor of Laws
John Francis (Frank) Roy
John Francis (Frank) Roy was born on a farm near
Tullis, Saskatchewan, and his early schooling was
in a one-room rural school. He earned a B.A. in
Philosophy and History (1948), B.Ed. (1953), and an
M.A (1968) from the University of
Saskatchewan
Mr. Roy contributed to the lives of
more than 4,500 students during
35 years as a high school teacher,
and his service to the teaching
profession has been extensive
and sustained. He contributed
signifi cantly to changes in the
English curriculum, having chaired
a two-year study on the state of
English studies in Saskatchewan,
culminating in the report “Freedom
with Responsibility” in 1968. He
was subsequently directly involved
in working to implement the
recommended improvements,
including development of a new High School English
curriculum. Mr. Roy also served the international
community, teaching at Lahr, Germany and Gambia,
West Africa.
Recognized as a master teacher and leader
in his profession, Mr. Roy was a lecturer in
English teaching methods at the University of
Saskatchewan and frequent guest lecturer on this
topic. In addition to his varied contributions to
improving student performance in English, he
was an active promoter of Outdoor Education,
developing and delivering the naturalist component
of the Outdoor Education program for 25 years. He
was a member of the provincial Rhodes Scholarship
Committee from 1987 to 1992 and served as
Western Canadian representative in 1989 and 1992.
A committed environmentalist and conservationist,
Mr. Roy contributed to drafting provincial and
national policies on ecology, and his work has
helped shape public opinion. He has been a member
of the Saskatchewan Natural
History Society, now Nature
Saskatchewan, from its inception,
serving on the executive and as
president. Mr. Roy also became a
founding member of the Saskatoon
Natural History Society, now
the Saskatoon Nature Society,
serving this organization in several
capacities, including president.
In 1996, Mr. Roy published Birds
of the Elbow, recognized as one of
the most comprehensive regional
bird guides published in Canada.
A companion work, The Birds of
Saskatoon, to which Mr. Roy was
a major contributor, was published
in 2002. He is a keen advocate of ecotourism and
served on the Ecotourism Task Force for Sustainable
Development.
Mr. Roy was awarded the fi rst Joe Duffy Memorial
Award for excellence in the teaching of English
(1983); the Meewasin Valley Conservation Award
for Leadership in conservation and environmental
education (1992); the Distinguished Alumnus
Award from St. Thomas More College (1992);
and the Queen Elizabeth 50th Anniversary Medal
in 2002. He is also a Fellow of the Saskatchewan
Natural History Society.
Mr. Roy’s work in education, natural history,
writing, ecumenism and community service are
extensive and exemplary and have contributed
much to enriching our province and nation.

John Courtney
John C. Courtney is Professor Emeritus of Political
Studies at the University of Saskatchewan. He
holds a B.A. (1958) from the University of Manitoba,
an M.B.A. (1960) from the
University of Western Ontario, and
an M.A. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964)
from Duke University. Professor
Courtney joined the University of
Saskatchewan in 1965 and served
on faculty for 39 years, fi rst with the
former department of Economics
and Political Science and more
recently with the department of
Political Studies. He has held
visiting teaching appointments at
Marburg University in Germany,
Northwestern University in the
United States, and the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. In
1990-1991 he held the Mackenzie
King Chair in Canadian Studies at
Harvard University.
Professor Courtney’s research and publications
have been devoted to questions of representation,
party leadership and party conventions, electoral
reform, and electoral districting. He is the author
of four books, including Do Conventions Matter?
Choosing National Party Leaders in Canada (1995)
and Commissioned Ridings: Designing Canada’s
Electoral Districts (2001). His most recent book,
Elections (2004), is the fi rst of ten volumes in the
Democratic Audit of Canada series. The editor
or co-editor of fi ve books, he has also published
19 refereed articles, 31 chapters in books, 15 articles
in non-refereed journals, and several commissioned
reports, occasional papers, and book reviews.
A former President of the Canadian
Political Science Association and
co-editor of the Canadian Journal
of Political Science, Professor
Courtney has served as well on the
boards of the Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council of
Canada, the Canadian Institute for
the Administration of Justice, and
the Canadian Advisory Committee
for the Halbert Centre of the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
He has received several research
grants, including two from the
Canada Council and six from the
Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council. He is currently
engaged in research on comparative electoral
reform, and in the fall of 2005 he will serve as a
Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson
Centre in Washington, D.C.
Professor Courtney received the Queen’s Silver
Jubilee Medal in 1977, the Canadian Studies
Writing Award in 1986, a Killam Research
Fellowship from the Canada Council in1998-2000,
the University of Saskatchewan’s Distinguished
Researcher Award in 2001, and the University
of Saskatchewan Students’ Union Teaching
Excellence Award in 2002.

Earned Doctor of Science
Reuben Mapletoft
Dr. Reuben Mapletoft received a D.V.M.
from the University of Guelph in 1967,
and M.S. (1975) and Ph.D. (1977) degrees in
Endocrinology and Reproductive
Physiology from the University of
Wisconsin. He joined the WCVM
as Director of Clinical Research
in 1977. He became Head of the
Department of Herd Medicine
and Theriogenology (now Large
Animal Clinical Sciences) in
1998. In July, 2002, Dr. Mapletoft
took a one year Leave of Absence
to consult with Bioniche Animal
Health, which has led to a 50%
appointment with the University
of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Mapletoft’s research in
reproductive biology and the
application of assisted reproductive
technologies in cattle spans more than 30 years. He
is world renowned for his work in bovine embryo
transfer, estrus synchronization and superovulation.
His embryo transfer protocols have become the
de facto standard for clinical use worldwide, and he
has been instrumental in developing the embryo
transfer industry in Canada and around the world.
He is a Past-president of the International Embryo
Transfer Society and Founding President of the
Canadian Embryo Transfer Association.
Much of Dr. Mapletoft’s recent work involves the
manipulation of ovarian follicular function for
superovulation, estrus synchronization and timedbreeding
in cattle. He has also utilized in vitro
fertilization to evaluate oocyte competence, the
effect of sperm morphology on fertilization and
zygote development, and the development of this
model to study male factor infertility in humans.
He is also investigating the use of non-biological
additives for the culture and
cryopreservation of spermatozoa,
oocytes and embryos. Dr. Mapletoft
has brought over $6 million
dollars in research funding to the
University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Mapletoft has played a central
role in building the University
of Saskatchewan Reproductive
Science and Medicine program, the
only one in Canada where there
is close collaboration between a
veterinary college and a college of
medicine. Reproductive research
on animal models has paid
dividends in learning how to treat
fertility disorders in people.
Dr. Mapletoft is also very active in technology
transfer: he has given over 150 invited lectures in
more than 30 countries and has trained graduate
students from all over the world. He has contributed
more than 300 papers to published conference
proceedings and authored more than 130 refereed
publications. He has conducted over three dozen
embryo transfer workshops for more than 200
veterinary professionals from around the world.
Dr. Mapletoft has set international standards and
his work has led to new developments in assisted
reproductive technologies in cattle on every
continent. His efforts and enthusiasm speak well,
both for him and for the university. In 2003, the
University of Saskatchewan honoured him with its
Distinguished Researcher Award.

President’s Service Award
David Bocking
A
leader and visionary in the information
technology fi eld, David Bocking has seen
many changes in his 25-year career at the
University of Saskatchewan. His
unwavering commitment to the
Department of Computer Science
and contributions to the campus
community make him a worthy
recipient of the Spring 2005
President’s Service Award.
Born and raised in Saskatoon,
Bocking earned a Bachelor of
Science (General) and Bachelor
of Science (Advanced Certifi cate)
in Computational Science at the
U of S in 1974. Following his
undergraduate studies, Bocking
was employed by Bell-Northern
Research in Ottawa, Ontario. He
returned to Saskatoon several years
later and accepted a position with the Hospital
Systems Study Group.
In 1980, Bocking joined the U of S and assumed
the role of computer facilities manager in the
Department of Computational Science (now
Computer Science). While working in the
department, Bocking completed his graduate studies
in Computational Science and obtained his Master’s
Degree in 1983.
Bocking is responsible for overseeing the
instructional and research computer labs in
Computer Science and for keeping abreast of trends
and changes in the fast-paced world of information
technology. He has gained the respect and
admiration of faculty, staff, researchers and students
across campus, as noted by the many supporters of
his award nomination.
Committed to the research mission
of the U of S, Bocking has provided
valuable insight and guidance on
information technology needs. He
has served on many institutional
committees and helped create
the campus-wide Computer Lab
Managers’ forum. He is an avid
promoter of high performance
computing and cluster computers
and continues to maintain
relationships with computer science
lab managers across the country.
Bocking has been a constant force
for technology innovation at the
U of S. He is credited with several
campus feats, including the fi rst
Unix lab in 1982, the fi rst workstation lab in 1986,
and the fi rst Macintosh lab in 1988. He was also
instrumental in the design of the undergraduate
computer science lab, one of Canada’s fi nest
facilities, in the Spinks Addition.
Bocking has been an active member of the
Administrative and Supervisory Personnel
Association (ASPA) and a volunteer for the
U of S Computer Museum. His colleagues credit
him for being an avid organizer and participant of
department social events.
An exemplary employee, an inspirational colleague,
and a champion of students, Bocking has made a
lasting impact on the U of S.

Distinguished Researcher Award
Robert L. Calder
The Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes
a faculty member’s contribution to scholarship
through the creation, expansion, and critique of
knowledge. Dr. Robert L. Calder,
Professor of English, College of Arts
and Science, is the recipient of the
Spring 2005 award.
Dr. Calder earned a Bachelor of Arts,
Honours, in English Literature from
the University of Saskatchewan in
1964. He continued his studies at the
University of Saskatchewan, earning
his Master’s degree in 1965, before
going to Leeds University where he
earned his Doctorate in 1970.
Calder is an internationally
renowned scholar in modern British
literature and, on the strength of his
two books and twenty-three articles on the subject,
is considered the world’s leading authority on
author Somerset Maugham.
Critics praised Calder’s fi rst book, W. Somerset
Maugham and the Quest for Freedom, published
in 1972, for both its thoroughness and readability.
His next book on Maugham, Willie: The Life of W.
Somerset Maugham, published in 1989, is known as
the defi nitive Maugham biography. It has attracted
enormous critical acclaim and garnered Calder
the Governor-General’s Literary Award for Non-
Fiction, one of Canada’s highest literary honours.
The author of six books, as well as a prodigious
output of infl uential articles and book chapters,
Calder is a scholar known for his remarkable
breadth as much as for his focused expertise. His
work deftly shifts from international stories to those
with local and personal resonance.
In 2004, Calder published two major works, each in
a different genre—Beware the British Serpent and
A Richer Dust: Family, Memory and the Second
World War. The former is a meticulously researched
and pioneering work on the role of British writers in
World War II propaganda. A Richer
Dust is a moving family memoir that
is at once personal and of universal
interest. It examines Canadians’
experience with shell-shock and the
effect of psychological dislocation on
succeeding family generations.
Beware the British Serpent won
two Saskatchewan Book Awards
in 2004, including Scholarly Book
Award, while A Richer Dust was
short-listed in both the non-fi ction
and Book of the Year categories.
Not content to limit his interests to
the literary realm, Calder is also the
co-author of a popular history of the Saskatchewan
Roughriders, Rider Pride: The Story of Canada’s
Best-Loved Football Team. Calder also co-edited the
anthology Time as a Human Resource, an ambitious
and multidisciplinary work on the subject of time—
something Calder knows how to use judiciously.
Calder has compiled his lengthy record of scholarly
achievement while participating actively in the
administrative life of the University and while
being a devoted teacher to both undergraduate
and graduate students. He chaired the English
Department from 1979 to 1981, was Associate Dean
of Humanities and Fine Arts from 1981 to 1984,
and was Acting Head of the Department of Music
between 1989 and 1999.
Acclaimed as he is in the fi elds of literary
commentary, biography, criticism and literary
history, Calder’s achievements contribute greatly to
the international reputation of this University and
to the success of our students.

Outreach & Public Service Award
Sheila Schmutz
A
leader in the fi eld of animal genetics and
researcher of international acclaim, Dr. Sheila
Schmutz has extended the University’s expertise
beyond the campus and scientifi c
community. Her commitment to
information-sharing and public
dialogue makes her a worthy
recipient of the Outreach and
Public Service Award.
Dr. Schmutz was born in
St. Paul, Minnesota, and grew
up in Louisiana and Wisconsin.
She received a B.Sc. from the
University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point, a M.Sc. from the University
of Alberta, and a Ph.D. from
Queen’s University.
After a post doctoral fellowship
at the University of Calgary, she
joined the U of S in 1983. In addition to her role as
professor in the Department of Animal and Poultry
Science, she currently serves as Acting Associate
Dean (Research) in the College of Agriculture.
Dr. Schmutz is highly regarded for her research in
two core areas–genes infl uencing the economics
of beef cattle production and genes affecting coat
colour in cattle and dogs.
Her world-class genomics research has thrust the
U of S into the international spotlight. Dr. Schmutz’s
team of professionals has been credited with many
discoveries including leading-edge DNA tests related
to cattle horns and scurs, carcass quality and milk
composition, cattle and dog coat colour and related
disorders. Groups of these DNA tests are offered
by three Canadian companies:
Quantum Genetics, Bova-Can
Laboratories and HealthGene.
As a result, the public can access
important information for breeding
decisions.
Although Dr. Schmutz’s research
is well-documented in scientifi c
papers and conferences, her
primary outreach tool has been the
Internet. Her websites dedicated
to cattle traits and cattle and
dog coat colour provide valuable
information to breeders, researchers
and students around the world.
During her sabbatical in 2003,
Dr. Schmutz launched an online
book entitled Genes for Cowboys. This website
on beef cattle genetics continues to be a popular
resource for students and ranchers.
She also shares information and engages the public
through newspaper and magazine articles and
television and radio interviews. She encourages her
students to participate in extension activities and
share their fi ndings with the broader community.
Dr. Schmutz has successfully transferred her

beyond, and is a fi ne ambassador of the U of S.

Master Teacher Award
Ernie Walker
It is more than a bit of a challenge to squeeze all
the enthusiastic accolades and overwhelmingly
positive comments offered by his students and
colleagues into this brief citation
for someone of the caliber of
Dr. Ernie Walker. We have here an
individual whose contributions to
heritage and the community have
been recognized both provincially
through the Saskatchewan Order
of Merit in 2001 and nationally
in his becoming a Member of
the Order of Canada this past
fall. Despite his incredibly busy
schedule of diverse undertakings,
teaching and his students always
remain his top priority.
Besides the repeatedly used
adjective “excellent” to describe
his ability as an instructor, the
oft-used phrases “one of the best profs you could
ask for” and “this course was so good I wish I could
take it again” are just two glowing examples of the
kind of response Dr. Walker elicits in the classroom.
Students love his approachability, his care and
concern for their success in their studies which
includes always fi nding time for their questions
and needs, his enthusiasm in and comprehensive
knowledge of the disciplines in which he instructs
and the way he inspires them to reach further and
delve deeper. He also brings an energy, spontaneity
and sense of humour to his teaching which is deeply
appreciated by students.
Dr. Walker has always carried a
teaching load that is the wonder
of most of us. Yet this occurs
because he responds to the needs
and interests of his students. Five
years ago he developed a BSc
program that has seen explosive
growth in enrolment. He also
contributes to the Paleobiology
program and has Associate
membership and teaching
responsibilities in the College of
Dentistry, College of Medicine and
the Deptartment of Geological
Sciences. He has been involved
in the U of S Aboriginal Post-
Secondary Education Initiative
and maintains strong ties with
First Nations through his work at Wanuskewin
Heritage Park which he helped develop over twenty
years ago. Dr. Walker also provides a Forensic
Anthropology Training course for law enforcement.
When asked once if he enjoyed teaching,
Dr. Walker replied that he not only enjoys it but
adores it at times. Clearly his students adore his
dedication and commitment to their best interests
as this award shows.

Governor General’s Academic Medals
These medals are awarded to the undergraduate student and graduate student with the highest academic standing.
Michael Gordon Barnett
(Silver Medal)
Michael was born and raised in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan, where he graduated from
Carlton Comprehensive High School in 2000.
He graduates with a Bachelor of Science in
Engineering Physics (with Great Distinction)
and with Bachelor of Science in Computer
Science (with Great Distinction). Michael is
the recipient of the 2005 Spring Convocation
Gold Medal from the Association of Professional
Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan, for
the most distinguished graduate in the College of
Engineering, the Dr. E.L. Harrington Prize; the
Engineering Physics Distinguished Graduate Award;
and a Graduate Scholarship from NSERC Canada.
He has received numerous awards and scholarships
during his academic career at the University of
Saskatchewan. These awards include the Weyerhauser
Community Education Scholarship, the Association
of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of
Saskatchewan Prize, the Teruo Natori Scholarship
and other University scholarships.
Michael has already contributed a published
scientifi c paper with Dr. R. Dick and K.E.
Wunderle (2004) “Variation of the fi ne structure
constant in QSO spectra – a fi rst observation of
subgravitational interactions?” to Monthly Notices
of the Royal Astronomical Society.
He will begin a Master’s Degree in physics
and work in the area of biophysics, specifi cally
involving pattern recognition techniques applied
to breast cancer screening methods. In the long
term, he would like to practice family medicine or
pediatrics in the Saskatoon area.
Julia Beth Ewaschuk
(Gold Medal)
Julia Ewaschuk was born in Elliot Lake, Ontario.
Her family moved to Saskatoon where Julia
attended Marion Graham Collegiate. In 1999,
she graduated with a B.Sc. (Nutrition) from the
University of Saskatchewan. After a year of work
and travel, she returned to the University and, in
2004, completed her Ph.D. in Nutrition.
Julia’s doctoral research has led to a new
understanding of the origins of metabolic acidosis,
a condition present in neonatal diarrhea, and
a major source of economic loss to livestock
enterprises in Canada. Working with her advisors
Gordon Zello and Jonathan Naylor, Julia
determined that the unusual acid, D-lactate, was
a major cause of the acidosis. To reverse the Dlactate
being produced in the colon of sick animals,
Julia investigated alternative treatment approaches
using probiotics instead of the conventionally used
antibiotics. Her experiments involving infants have
expanded the research implications to developing
countries where diarrhea is a major health concern.
Julia’s outstanding academic abilities have been
recognized with many awards, including the
prestigious NSERC Canada Scholarship. At
this Convocation, she is also being awarded the
University of Saskatchewan Graduate Thesis
Award in the Life Sciences. Outside of her
academic life, Julia is an accomplished musician
and singer who enjoys the outdoors and travelling.
Julia is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University
of Alberta. She is studying the molecular mechanisms
by which probiotics can treat infl ammatory bowel
disease. In the future, Julia would like to remain in
academia, as a teacher and researcher.
