Women’s State Team 6 USGA Women’s State Team Leaders Round 1 – Maryland, at 1-under-par 143 (Elyse Smidinger 68, Lisa Schlesinger 75), by three strokes over Texas (Anna Schultz 72, Robin Burke 74). Round 2 – Maryland, at 8-over 296 (Smidinger 72, Schlesinger 81), by one stroke over Texas (Schultz 75, Mina Hardin 76). Weather Sunny all three rounds with temperatures in the 70s to low 80s. The winds picked up in the afternoon each of the final two days. Notes A total of 51 teams participated in this year’s championship, which matched the largest field in the event’s history. The 2007 Women’s State Team also drew 51 teams … Puerto Rico fielded a team for the first time … New Hampshire was the only state not to send a team … Six USGA champions were in the field: Virginia Grimes, of Mississippi (1998 U.S. Women’s Mid- Amateur); Mina Hardin, of Texas (2010 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur); Joan Higgins, of California (2008 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur); Martha Leach, of Kentucky (2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur); Anna Schultz of Texas (2007 USGA 2011 Championship Notes Senior Women’s Amateur); and Meghan Stasi, of Florida (2006, 2007 and 2010 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur) … Four past USA Curtis Cup players also competed: Robin Burke, of Texas (1998); Grimes (1998, 2000 and 2006); Noreen Mohler, of Pennsylvania (1978, 2010 captain); and Stasi (2008) … Laura Coble, of Georgia (2005 and 2009); Grimes (1997 for Alabama); Leigh Klasse, of Minnesota (2001); Thuhashini Selvaratnam, of Arizona (2007); and Lynn Thompson, of Ohio (2003), were past winning USGA Women’s State Team members in the field … Susan Marchese, of Nebraska, continued her streak of playing in all nine USGA Women’s State Teams … Carol Semple Thompson, of Pennsylvania, and current USGA Women’s Committee Chairman Martha Lang, of Louisiana, had their streaks ended at eight. Thompson served as the non-playing captain for Pennsylvania. Lang was in attendance as a USGA Rules official … Allisen Corpuz, 13, of Hawaii, was the youngest competitor and Anne Carr, 67, of Washington, was the oldest competitor. Hawaii (average age 14) had the youngest team, while Virginia (average age 57.3) had the oldest team … The competition was a homecoming for Kentucky’s Leach, who grew up in Savannah … A total of 31 competitors in this year’s field competed in their first USGA championship.
