Round 1 – Washington and Kansas, at 2-under-par 140, by
two over Georgia. Round 2 – Kansas and Georgia, at 3-under
281, by five over Florida, Rhode Island and North Carolina.
Weather
Fog suspended play for 60 minutes in the first round Tuesday
morning. Play suspended for darkness at 7:35 p.m. PDT. Play
suspended again in Wednesday’s second round for 45 minutes
due to fog. Play suspended for the day due to darkness at 7:37
p.m. PDT. Temperatures were cool and mild throughout the
week, ranging from the low 60s to upper 70s. Overcast skies
in the a.m. transitioned to sunny skies each afternoon.
Notes
All 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico were
represented in the field … Three USGA champions participated:
2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Brad Benjamin
(Illinois), 1994 and 2001 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Tim
Jackson (Tennessee) and 2003 and 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur
champion Nathan Smith (Pennsylvania) … Smith, Knapp
(Pennsylvania), Keith Decker (Virginia) and Jackson had all won
a USGA Men’s State Team title … Decker and Frank Vana Jr.
(Massachusetts) have now competed in all nine USGA Men’s
State Team Championships … Elvin Gonzalez and Erick J.
Morales had represented Puerto Rico in past World Amateur
Team Championships, while Gonzalez and Smith each competed
in the 2010 Copa de las Americas event in Argentina …
Twenty-five golfers had qualified for the 2010 U.S. Amateur,
including stroke-play medalist Jeff Wilson (California) … The
65 shot by Georgia’s David Noll Jr. in the second round was a
competitive course record at Mayacama ... The youngest player
in the field was 16-year-old Seth Sweet, of Maine, while the
oldest was 61-year-old Todd Baumgartner, of North Dakota
… By hosting the Men’s State Team Championship, California
joined Minnesota as the only state to have hosted all 13 USGA
championships, the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup and State Team
Championship.
