1. ExECuTIvE SuMMARY
Poseidon Tarama has been a long term supporter and signatory to the National Packaging Covenant since
2001, re-signing the newly strengthened National Packaging Covenant in March 2006, and most recently
becoming a signatory to the revised Australian Packaging Covenant (APC).
As a member of the packaging supply chain and as a signatory to the Covenant, Poseidon Tarama has
prepared this Action Plan for the period 2010-2015. In it we set out company-specific actions to adapt the
Sustainable Packaging Guidelines to our product range for our packaging supply chains. The aim is to develop
specific actions for the implementation of commitments we have made under the Covenant.
Each action is linked to the key performance indicators (KPIs) and targets as set out in the Covenant. Poseidon
Tarama stores all documentation pertaining to the APC on the company’s IT network and this will be extended
to include this Action Plan and the SPG on completion. All of these records will be available at our office for
review by the relevant parties on request.
Poseidon Tarama has committed to addressing specific actions over the coming year and the lifespan of this
plan in each of the three main areas i.e. Design, Recycling and Product Stewardship. In Section 5 we layout our
timeline and order of priority for the actions we aim to undertake under the SPG implementation plan over the
next twelve months.
The key goals for 2011 are;
1.
2.
3.
Design - Review the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG) applied against our
main packaging types.
Recycling - Review the on-site waste management program for our main warehouse
to ensure all packaging material is recovered from the waste stream and directed
towards recycling.
Product Stewardship - Consider the inclusion of aspects of the SPG guidelines
on our main packaging types.
2. COMPANY PROfILE
Our founder Christos Saristavros loved his food and used his family’s recipes to produce dips which he sold at
the South Melbourne market. At that time one flavour dominated his business - Tarama (made from fish roe).
From those humble beginnings some 15 million containers find their way into Australian homes every year
making Black Swan Australia’s favourite dip.
These days our recipes are constantly changing reflecting the dynamic nature of our community. We still make
Tarama of course but also guacamole, cheese and chives, hommus … in fact over twenty different flavours.
We also still sell to the South Melbourne market and operate a state of the art facility which allows us to produce
the freshest yoghurt. From a one-man business, the company now employees over 75 people.
Black Swan dips can be found in all major supermarkets throughout Australia. Black Swan also produces a
popular range of 2.3 kg dips together with a range of 2 kg, 4 kg or 10 kg thick and creamy Greek Style Yoghurts
in easy to carry buckets with clip on lids for use in food service.
The retail packaging is in 150g, 200g x 4, 400g and 500g PP bases and lids, whereas the food service
packaging is in 2.3 kg PP buckets and 2 kg, 4 kg and 10 kg HDPE buckets.
3.1 OuR APC TEAM
Poseidon Tarama has carried out a detailed review of the skills required to meet the requirements of the
Australian Packaging Covenant. We have created a team made up of the following to work on this key project
as part of our ongoing efforts to address packaging:
3
Name: Responsibility:
Dominic Passarelli APC contact
3rd party Consultants
The APC team is responsible for developing an internal project plan to co-ordinate all tasks required to
implement the Action Plan.
Between our internal team and our advisors, a project plan to co-ordinate all tasks required to implement the
Action Plan will be developed in the coming months that will be applied to the packaging procurement process
for the duration of the APC. This project plan will be updated to respond to any further requirements from the
APC or our clients. All individuals listed as members of the team may not be involved in all twelve strategies
relating to the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines.
POSEIDON TARAMA PTY LTD | APC ACTION PLAN | 2010- 2015
The team’s preparation for addressing the APC requirements included:
4
•
•
•
An onsite workshop in Clayton to update Mr. Dominic Passarrelli on the development of the Australian
Packaging Covenant and the transition requirements from the National Packaging Covenant to the
new Australian Packaging Covenant.
A review of Poseidon Tarama’s product range i.e. review packaging on products supplied to the
market and packaging waste arising onsite in order to identify the most practical and productive
approach to address the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines.
Development of a set of questionnaire templates for discussion with packaging manufacturers to
ensure they are aware of the obligations placed on Poseidon Tarama as a signatory to the packaging
Covenant that may go beyond the current internal set of requirements for the procurement of new
packaging lines.
Poseidon Tarama will circulate a series of information requests to our main suppliers of plastic containers as a
first step to advising all packaging suppliers we will be requiring more detailed data in relation to the packaging
they supply to us for application to our products.
The chosen method of review has split the product range of Poseidon Tarama by material type, concentrating
on plastic type 3 initially, as although there may be a number of sizes, flavours and brands of dips manufactured
by Poseidon Tarama , the standard constituents for a plastic container by material and weight are very standard.
Over the next five years this will result in an expanding number of material type and product reviews,
concentrating on those that make up the highest % of turnover of sales into the Australian consumer market.
As Poseidon Tarama have a range of own brand products they may specify branding and marketing content i.e.
logos etc, we will ensure these are part of our initial Sustainable packaging Guideline reviews as they constitute
an element Poseidon Tarama can directly effect.
For Poseidon Tarama the goal is to look at optimising packaging to use resources efficiently and reduce
environmental impact without compromising product quality and safety. In order to do this, Poseidon Tarama
has committed to develop procedures for new packaging design or procurement to ensure these cover the
requirements of Sustainable Packaging Guidelines.
5.2.2 outCome
The outcome should be packaging designed to:
•
•
•
Avoid or minimise the use of materials and other resources;
5.2.3 Key PerformanCe IndICator
The Key Performance Indicator for design will be evidence that Poseidon Tarama is implementing the
Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPG) for design and procurement of packaging.
5.2.4 Current and Planned aCtIons
Poseidon Tarama has commenced the review of all packaging using the SPG guidelines.
Poseidon Tarama has determined that it will take twelve months (to April 2012) to review 80% of all current
packaging and will aim to have implement procedures for packaging reviews in new products using the SPG
guidelines by 2015.
Poseidon Tarama has integrated third party consulting, software and training to this project so every member
of our team is fully resourced to carry out the tasks required. This aids with the development of our team and
procedures, and backing documentation. We are using standardised templates developed specifically for this
project.
The reviews of the packaging on our selected packaging types will be carried out between April 2011 and
March 2012, and all 63 questions will be documented for each type. A full audit trail will be available for both
compliance and substantive audits.
The outer in which Poseidon Tamara Pty Ltd’s products are delivered, and which normally results as waste on
retail premises, is manufactured from recyclable materials. The individual container is also recyclable, and with
customer co-operation through kerbside and away from home recycling systems, it is possible to have 100% of
the packaging recycled.
having on-site recovery systems for recycling of used packaging and, to consider a policy to purchase products
with a recycled material content.
5.3.2 outCome
The outcome should be:
8
•
•
Improved recovery of recycled materials from the premises of Poseidon Tarama; and
Increased secondary markets for recovered packaging materials.
5.3.3 Key PerformanCe IndICator
The Key performance indicator for recycling will be evidence that Poseidon Tarama is implementing the on-site
recovery of packaging through documentation provided from our contracted waste collectors.
5.3.4 Current and Planned aCtIons
Poseidon Tarama has commenced the review of all on-site waste management practices in relation to our inhouse
waste.
Cardboard, plastic pails, plastic carboys, bulk containers and steel drums are collected for recycling by
commercial recyclers and chemical and raw material suppliers, although product contamination remains an
issue.
The company is planning to introduce a formal Waste Reduction Plan and this should result in a significant
improvement in the reporting of waste figures as well as the actual activity of segregation and recycling of waste.
packaging on products to remove them from the litter stream.
5.4.4 Current and Planned aCtIons
In 2009-2010, Poseidon Tarama conducted a number of tours for schools in the local area, during which
recycling practices were promoted. This is an ongoing process and will be formalised.
The use of cartons which are 100% recyclable and the recycling symbol encourages wholesalers and retailers to
recycle.
Our standard product range contain the plastic type number on each individual retail pack and these are
