Fall/Winter 2010-2011 - 2
Let the Games Begin...
The JCC Maccabi Games ® are coming to Philadelphia and the Kaiserman JCC for 2011!
It’s time for you to be part of the home team!
The Kaiserman JCC will be the official host of the 2011 JCC Maccabi
Games ® , August 14-19, 2011. The JCC Maccabi Games ® are an
international sporting event for Jewish athletes ages 13-16. Held every
summer in North America, thousands of Jewish teenagers compete in
sports competitions, participate in community service projects, have fun
at the evening social events and make friends that will last a lifetime.
The entire community will have a role to play.
Do not miss out on being part of the home team!
Host Families: Welcoming guests is an important concept in Judaism. Abraham and Sarah were known for their
hospitality and set the standard for how to treat guests in homes. As a JCC Maccabi Games ® host family, you are
helping to carry on the tradition. During these Games, your home becomes a home-away-from-home for our
visiting athletes. 500 host families are needed to house the 1000 visiting athletes from across the US, Canada and
abroad. By welcoming these young JCC Maccabi athletes into your home, you and your family will share the true
experience of the Philadelphia 2011 JCC Maccabi Games ® .
Volunteer: As a volunteer, you can experience the excitement of the Opening Ceremonies, four incredible days
of athletic competition, help serving lunches, supervising evening social activities, helping us prepare for athlete
arrivals or serving on a planning committee. No matter what job you do, big or small, you will help create memories
that will last a lifetime.
Sponsorship: You have the unique opportunity to share in the success of the 2011 JCC Maccabi Games by becoming
a sponsor. Our goal is to raise $1.5 Million in funds and products to make the Games a reality in our community.
Make your pledge today.
Calling all Athletes: Jewish athletes are invited to try-out for Team Philly. 250 local teenagers will make up the
local delegation of athletes. Sports include: basketball, soccer, baseball, girls lacrosse, tennis, swimming, dance, and
bowling. Try-outs will start in January.
Center. Your contribution to the Kaiserman JCC enables us to provide the programs and services that so many in our
community rely upon.
Become a Sponsor and Enjoy
Recognition & Promotion
We c a n a l i g n yo u r
b u s i n e s s w i t h o u r
members in a number
of ways. We service over
4,500 individuals through
numerous programs and
vehicles that cater to a
variety of age groups and
interests. Whether your
goal is to support a specific JCC event, or
develop an ongoing relationship with all or
part of our membership, we can structure a
strategy that will satisfy your philanthropic
and marketing goals. In-kind donations of
goods and services are also welcome and
are recognized at the sponsorship level
commensurate to its cash value.
Brick Paver
We will install a brick
paver on our walkway
engraved with your
personal message to
commemorate a special
occasion, celebration or memory of a loved
one. Single size bricks are $75; double size
bricks are $150. Add your logo or a stock
image for an additional $10.
Tribute Cards
A tribute card, beautifully
designed by Philadelphia
artist Mordechai Rosenstein,
is a thoughtful, flexible way
to make a gift to the JCC
in honor of any number of
special occasions, including
B’nai Mitzvah, birthdays and
anniversaries. They are also
appropriate for memorials. A
minimum gift of $10 per card is requested.
Legacy Gifts
Ensuring a legacy is a personal pledge of faith
– a commitment to keep the doors of the JCC
open for future generations. While outright
gifts such as cash and stock are vital to our
success, donors can also support the JCC
by making a planned gift – leaving a legacy.
Immediate benefits to you might include
tax savings, additional income, and the
satisfaction of knowing that your personal
charitable goals will be met.
Designated Gifts &
Naming Opportunities
Your gift may be designated to benefit a
specific program or area within the JCC.
This enables you to target your gift to
programs or projects that are important to
you or to a loved one, as a gift in-memory
or in-honor. Some areas you might be
interested in targeting include our aquatics
pavilion, gymnasium, group fitness room or
areas within the Robert J. Wilf Preschool &
Kindergarten.
Employer Matched Donations
As a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization,
Kaiserman JCC is eligible to receive employer
matched donations. We will happily
acknowledge both you and your employer
for donations made through your company’s
matching program. Check to see if your
employer participates!
Volunteer
There is always something happening at the
JCC and opportunity to help! Individuals
and groups can serve on a committee, help
out with special events, beautify our campus
and more! Let us match your interest to a
project that will make a real difference in
our community.
Our Team Program is designed to prepare gymnasts for USAG competitions.
Gymnasts first learn the necessary skills, dance and acrobatics on the precompetitive
levels. Building on these skills they then learn the competitive
routines they will perform at meets. Gymnasts have the opportunity to compete
with gymnasts from other clubs in the region. Within the framework of positive
reinforcement and encouragement, our coaches provide an opportunity for
gymnasts to grow in skill level and confidence, creating a positive experience
that will add to their physical and social development. Extended hours offer
team members time for additional practice on gymnastics skills. Time is also
spent on strength conditioning, endurance, and flexibility, necessary for the
proficiency of skills. Participation on a team is by invitation or scheduled tryout
with our Gymnastics Director, Valencia Chang. For USAG levels 2 to Advanced
Prep Optional. Call 610-896-7770 x 106 or e-mail gymnastics@phillyjcc.com
Fall/Winter 2010-2011 - 25
Holiday Celebrations and Closings
A list of when and why we are closed.
Shabbat: The Jewish day of rest begins at
sundown on Friday evening and ends at
twilight on Saturday evening. It is a time to
enjoy spiritual contemplation, the company of
family members, nature and relaxation. It is
an opportunity to feel renewed and ready for
the coming week.
Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year
begins the 10-day period known as the High
Holidays, the Days of Awe. We use this time
to think about the past year and resolve to
improve what needs improvement in the
coming year. The blowing of the shofar
(ram’s horn) serves as a wake-up call to begin
the process.
Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement
occurs on the 10th (last) day of the High
Holidays. It is a day of fasting, prayer, inner
contemplation and a collective confession of
sins. It is also a day of optimism, full of the
promise of forgiveness and improvement of
our behavior in the coming year.
Sukkot: Preparations for Sukkot begin
right after Yom Kippur with the building
of the sukkah, a temporary booth made
of branches of wood. This harvest holiday
emphasizes the values of hospitality, the
rewards of work and our trust in G-d. It
reminds us of the period of time the Jews
wandered in the desert after leaving Egypt.
Shemini Atzeret: The eighth day of Sukkot,
a day of solemn assembly, is a holiday
on which prayers for rain are recited. A
memorial service is also held.
Simchat Torah: Simchat Torah is associated
with Sukkot, but is an independent, joyous
holiday. On Simchat Torah, the cycle of
reading from the Torah ends and begins
again. In every synagogue, the Torah scrolls
are taken out and carried around
in processions.
Fall/Winter 2010-2011 - 26
Chanukah: Chanukah is the eight-day
Festival of Lights. It recalls the fight of
the Maccabees for religious freedom. We
light the menorah for eight nights to
commemorate the victory over the Grecco-
Syrians and rededication of the Temple.
Purim: Literally “lots,” Purim is a holiday
that comes in the middle of the Hebrew
month of Adar. On Purim, we read the Scroll
of Esther (Megillat Esther, often referred
to as the Megillah), which tells the story of
how the intervention of Queen Esther and
Mordechai saved the Jewish communities
of ancient Persia from certain annihilation.
We celebrate this rescue with high-spirited
revelry, including wearing costumes of the
main characters in the Megillah, exchanging
gifts of food, giving charity (Tzedakah) to
those in need, and baking and eating Purim
pastries called Hamantaschen. We attend
Purim carnivals where the whole family can
enjoy this holiday together.
Passover: The Passover Seder recreates the
story of the Jews’ exodus from Egypt. Many
customs and rituals are associated with
Passover. The Haggadah is used to tell the
story of the exodus, everyone drinks four
cups of wine, and a festive meal follows the
Seder. Leavened bread and food products
made with flour are prohibited.
Shavuot: Shavuot is a Hebrew word meaning
“weeks” and refers to the Jewish festival
marking the giving of the Torah at Mount
Sinai. Shavuot, like so many other Jewish
holidays began as an ancient agricultural
festival, marking the end of the spring barley
harvest and the beginning of the summer
wheat harvest. Shavuot was distinguished
in ancient times by bringing crop offerings
to the Temple in Jerusalem.
