NYMPHS (1587)
18 engravings
The series Nymphs consists of an engraved ride page and
17 numbered engravings of water nymphs and was pub­
lished by Philips Galle in 1587. According to the title page
all engravings were engraved by Galle after his own
designs .The Nymphs are dedicated to the Antwerp burgher
and former alderman Rutger van der Haept, to whom
Galle also dedicated a series of landscapes and cityscapes
after Hendrik van Cleve; see Hollstein, vol. 4, p. 170, nos.
1-38 and ibid., vol. 7, p. 80, nos. 423-460.The prints were
reissued in Antwerp at an unknown date by his grandson
Johannes Galle. In this new edition die nymphs were min­
gled with dieir male counterparts, namely the 17 engraved
sea and river gods, first published by Philips Galle in 1586
(cp. appendix 3B).
