12 engravings
The series consists of a title page - dedicated to Claudio
Acquaviva (1543-1615), reigning General of the Jesuit
Order ~ 5 an engraving showing both kings and prelates in
adoration of the IHS monogram and ten portraits of illus­
trious Jesuit priests. The title page states that Philips Gallc
was the inventor and engraver of the serics.The style, tech­
nique and date of the engravings - judging by the dates
on some portraits this series most have been published
after 1593, when Galle himself was rarely active as an
engraver - suggest that someone from Galle's workshop
(possibly Cornells Galle or Karei de Mallery) might have
been the engraver involved.
All the sets of the rare series known so far (Brussels, Madrid
and The Hague) seem to be incomplete. As yet the name
of the author of the verses, the date of publication and the
approbatio are still lacking. The portraits are not num­
bered and are here presented in the order of the prints in
Brussels.

The inscriptions are engraved in cartouches which are set
in an ornamental border, at the left side of die text Christ
with the Cross is depicted, to the right Mary, Mother of
God. The tide page is dedicated to Claudio Acquaviva,
the fifth General of the Jesuit Order. His portrait is not
included in the series.
