SCIENCE TECHNO MUSEUM
All Year 8 students took part in the Science Techno
Museum and worked in teams to produce a visual
display on an item or process of technology. They
had to present information on the science behind
their chosen item or process, its impact on society
and the history of its development. As well as
visual communication, all teams had to be able to
verbally explain concepts and answer any
questions from an audience.
I was very impressed with the high standard of
displays this year. Student understanding of the
scientific principles was outstanding. As with
previous years, they chose to study a wide variety
of topics and worked efficiently and effectively to
create their final products.
At Freshwater Campus last Friday, the 5 teams of
finalists displayed their work and were judged by
various college principals, teachers, university
visitors and primary school students. The Manly
judges’ award for the best display was won by
“Batteries” by Michael Hutchison, Sam Phillis,
Scott Allen and Garen Douzian. These boys gave
detailed explanations of how all batteries work
and thoroughly impressed their audience with the
depth of their knowledge. The People’s Choice
award went to “Cops and Robbers” by Katrina
Lloyd, Georgia Brown, Maggie Bullen, Isabelle
Edwards and Jasmine Huang. The girls were
entertaining and kept their audience interested
with a variety of interactive, verbal and visual
explanations.
The other three teams “Trains”, “Sunglasses” and
“Rollercoasters” all presented displays of very high
quality. The judges of all of the Manly groups
commented on our students’ deep understanding
of their chosen topic and their ability to
communicate in a variety of ways with their
audiences.

Actuarial Studies information session for
Macquarie University will be held on 11
September, 11‐12.00pm, Price Theatre, Building
WSA.
The Design Centre Enmore delivers courses in
graphic design, interior design, jewellery design,
product design, live production theatre and
events, 3D animation and interactive digital media.
Application packages can be obtained on Open
Day 11 September or by phoning the College 9394
5700. Closing date is 29 October 2010. New for
2011 will be a three year bachelor of Interior
Design course.
APM College of Business & Communication –
scholarship information has arrived. Closing date
for applications is 16 October, 2010.
Bedford College Open Day – 25 September
9.30‐3.00pm offers courses in business, accounting
and child care. Scholarship exams are offered on
the day (10.30am) if you want to try for one.
Australian, Film, TV & Radio School – offers a
foundation diploma for students interested in film,
new media or television. Applications open on
September 1. For more information phone 1300

Year 12 Tax File Number ‐ Reminder, if you do
not have a TFN you cannot defer your university
fees. So apply for one through school before you
leave. It is easy and only takes a few minutes and
a black pen!
