leadership traits that will make her a great captain and a leader beyond her school years. Steve Smith is one of the most accomplished and successful SRC members the school has seen. Since his first election he has demonstrated a willingness to throw himself into all school activities whether they be fun activities or serious leadership roles. His maturity, ability to relate to adults and peers, and sense of purpose have been recognised within the school and also in regional and state SRC activities. The responsibility he has as a future citizen who can bring about change, bodes well for our school and for our wider community. Sian Liddy is a highly organised and enthusiastic student who has a naturally high profile within the school because of her level of engagement with all activities. She has natural leadership qualities of warmth, initiative and compassion. The respect of the school community reflects these qualities. Sian has played a very prominent role in school and regional SRC activities where her qualities have been resulted in her election to office bearing roles. The field of students who stood for these positions reflects the healthy nature of student voice in our school. I have great confidence that we will be having an exceptional year of achievement in 2011. Year 10 and 11 Interviews – the interviews for Year 10 students and their parents this week demonstrate tangibly the commitment of the College to making sure students are supported and guided individually in their subject choices for Stage 6. Similarly, the Week 8 Year 11 student interviews within the school ensure that students are given the best advice possible about their final subject combinations for their HSC. Thanks to all parents who have become involved, to College and school staff for their involvement, and to Ms Meg Tulk for her excellent co‐ordination of this process. Chinese Visitors – in recent weeks we have had visits from education officials in districts adjoining Beijing who are looking at opportunities to create and extend links with Northern Sydney Region and individual schools. Delegations of visitors have been very impressed with what we do in our school and how we incorporate critical and creative thinking into school curriculum. I am very keen to establish a sister school relationship in the future. Year 7 Gala Debates – last Tuesday, four Year 7 teams who are not part of the external Year 7 competitive debating team, participated in a debating gala. All Year 7 students have been involved in debating and public speaking training this year as part of our program to improve the standard of formal oracy. Mentored by Year 9 and 10 debaters, they showed great depth of talent in debates they held for their peers. Thanks go to Ms Josie O‘Donnell for her organisation and our resident coach, ex‐student James Smith, for driving this initiative. Next P&C Meeting ‐ the 15 th September meeting will be the annual school forum night with parents invited to listen to a presentation by Dr Marjorie Seaton from the University of Western Sydney. She will be talking about a study which includes our school, some of the preliminary findings and later a discussion forum. This is also a very valuable night where parent contributions are greatly appreciated. Year 9 Electives 2011 – last Monday Year 8 parents and students grappled with the choices of subjects for Stage 5. The positive reception to the changes which will enhance the breadth of subjects and the quality of student learning bodes well for 2011. At this point we are collating and processing the choice forms. The final subject selection forms will be issued very soon to all students so the timetable can be formed. Vietnam Veterans Day – last week recognition was given to Eloise Griffin and Paul Webster (Year 10) and the iJazz ensemble group at this occasion in <strong>Manly</strong> on Wednesday 18 th . I was very pleased to present the speakers with handsome certificates courtesy of the RSL this week. Recognition should also be given to Cameron Jewell whose name was inadvertently left off the list of performers last week. Year 9 Music Night – the performances of the Year 9 students on Wednesday night showed how rapidly they have progressed this year in their musical studies. The night of classical music featured Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert.
Congratulations to these fine musicians and thank you to their teacher Ms Elisa Cranston. Musicale 2010 – the most prestigious night of the Band Program will take place on the 17 th September at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney. This concert is the last formal appearance for our seniors before they graduate and showcases the senior ensembles at their very best. This is a first for the school program using a new venue which will suit our elite performers so well. Tickets can only be purchased online using the link below. Early booking is recommended to secure seats. http://theindependent.org.au/whats‐on/ Working Bee – early notice is given that the P&C has confirmed the next working bee for Sunday September 19 from 9 – 12:00pm. Some painting of new storerooms under TAS and gardening projects are in store at the moment. Please mark in your diaries and note that Sunday has been chosen to minimise clashes with sporting events. Further details will be published in forthcoming editions of the newsletter. Gala Days Year 7 and 8 – congratulations to the girls basketball team who were winners in the Year 7 Gala Day competition of two weeks ago. Year 8 had similar success with the boys basketball team and the girls netball team being victorious. The girls basketball team lost by one point. Year 9/10 Grade Sport – We have just been notified that the girls junior soccer and netball teams have progressed to the Warringah Zone finals next Wednesday. The netballers have been undefeated throughout the season. The boys basketball team will also compete in the Zone Finals. We wish all teams success next week. Tournament of Minds – congratulations to our two teams who competed last weekend in this event. It is the first time we have entered for some years and all reports indicate that the students gave a highly creditable performance (see later report). Pinestock – today the SRC annual student festival will be held between recess and lunch. The theme this year is agricultural with Chickenstock being the subtitle publicised. The performances, stalls and activities are all devised and run by students. The day is a recognition of student maturity and responsibility, and an opportunity for the SRC to build upon the school culture of unity and optimism. Congratulations to: � Babette Auzins (Year 11) upon her selection as a Youth At The Zoo (YATZ) mentor last week. This responsible position is only offered to those students who demonstrate, through written application and interview, necessary skills, knowledge, commitment and interest in conservation, the environment and zoo activities. � James Bailey (Year 10) who, last Saturday, was one of two selected umpires who managed the curtain raiser AFL game between the Bulldogs and the Swans for the National Indigenous AFL Carnival this week. This was a unique and well deserved honour for this fine young sportsman. � Corey Van Der Zwaag (Year 11) upon his selection for the NSWCHS State Athletics Carnival competing in the U17 Boys Javelin event � Katie Garman (Year 12) who has successfully combined her rehearsals and performances with the Sydney Youth Philharmonic with her HSC Trials. This sort of commitment has been a hallmark of Katie’s secondary schooling. David Tomlin Principal From the wonderful world of mathematics Consider the magic of this month of August.
