HSC Major Works and Performances – last
Friday night Year 12 Music students showcased
their final performance before their HSC in front of
a very proud audience of parents and peers. The
quality of their musicianship was testimony to
their work and dedication as well as the talents of
their teacher Ms Lucienne Howard. The Drama
students felt collective relief yesterday after their
group and monologue HSC performances. The
complexity of their items showed in the planning
and execution of works of intense physicality, raw
edge emotions and perfect timing. The students
and their teachers Ms Neda Joyce and Ms Marisa
Carolan were physically and mentally exhausted,
but the palpable sense of satisfaction made it all
worthwhile. Last week we saw the Textiles and
Design major works and Design and Technology
major works on display, English Extension works
were submitted and next week the Visual Arts
Major works go on display at the Creative Arts
night. For many students who have balanced HSC
Trial exams with major works, this is indeed one of
the most intense periods of the year.
Please note the Creative and Performing Arts night
Wednesday 1 st September from 5:00 – 9:00pm in
the school hall. There will be a selection of music
and dance performances to complement the
outstanding art works on display. Parents should
have received an invitation in the mail by today.
School Captains 2011 – the captains elect for
2012 were announced on assembly this week. It is
with great pride and confidence that we announce
Gary Zhu and Adelaide Welling as Captains and
Steve Smith and Sian Liddy as Vice Captains.
Gary Zhu is an exceptional young man who
epitomises so much of
our school. He is a highly
accomplished pianist, a
keen sportsman and a
very capable academic
student. He has had a
huge impact upon the
SRC in his years of
election fulfilling his
promises to the utmost.
Gary is very understated in his achievements yet
highly conscious of the importance of his new role.
He is aware that he is a new style of leader who
represents in the best way the culturally inclusive
nature of Manly. He will be an excellent role model
and leader.
Adelaide Welling has since her enrolment always
stood out as a natural
leader. She has a
remarkable capacity to
make others feel
welcome, supported
and appreciated. Her
energy, confidence and
infectious enthusiasm
inspire others to
become involved. The
school goal of giving back to the community
imbues everything that she does. Her empathy,
capacity to read people and respond to
opportunities and situations with ease are
leadership traits that will make her a great captain
and a leader beyond her school years.
Steve Smith is one of the
most accomplished and
successful SRC members
the school has seen. Since
his first election he has
demonstrated a
willingness to throw
himself into all school
activities whether they be
fun activities or serious
leadership roles. His maturity, ability to relate to
adults and peers, and sense of purpose have been
recognised within the school and also in regional
and state SRC activities. The responsibility he has
as a future citizen who can bring about change,
bodes well for our school and for our wider
community.
Sian Liddy is a highly
organised and
enthusiastic student who
has a naturally high profile
within the school because
of her level of
engagement with all
activities. She has natural
leadership qualities of
warmth, initiative and compassion. The respect of
the school community reflects these qualities. Sian
has played a very prominent role in school and
regional SRC activities where her qualities have
been resulted in her election to office bearing
roles.
The field of students who stood for these positions
reflects the healthy nature of student voice in our
school. I have great confidence that we will be
having an exceptional year of achievement in
2011.
Year 10 and 11 Interviews – the interviews for
Year 10 students and their parents this week
demonstrate tangibly the commitment of the
College to making sure students are supported and
guided individually in their subject choices for
Stage 6. Similarly, the Week 8 Year 11 student
interviews within the school ensure that students
are given the best advice possible about their final
subject combinations for their HSC. Thanks to all
parents who have become involved, to College and
school staff for their involvement, and to Ms Meg
Tulk for her excellent co‐ordination of this process.
Chinese Visitors – in recent weeks we have had
visits from education officials in districts adjoining
Beijing who are looking at opportunities to create
and extend links with Northern Sydney Region and
individual schools. Delegations of visitors have
been very impressed with what we do in our
school and how we incorporate critical and
creative thinking into school curriculum. I am very
keen to establish a sister school relationship in the
future.
Year 7 Gala Debates – last Tuesday, four Year 7
teams who are not part of the external Year 7
competitive debating team, participated in a
debating gala. All Year 7 students have been
involved in debating and public speaking training
this year as part of our program to improve the
standard of formal oracy. Mentored by Year 9 and
10 debaters, they showed great depth of talent in
debates they held for their peers. Thanks go to Ms
Josie O‘Donnell for her organisation and our
resident coach, ex‐student James Smith, for driving
this initiative.
Next P&C Meeting ‐ the 15 th September meeting
will be the annual school forum night with parents
invited to listen to a presentation by Dr Marjorie
Seaton from the University of Western Sydney.
She will be talking about a study which includes
our school, some of the preliminary findings and
later a discussion forum. This is also a very
valuable night where parent contributions are
greatly appreciated.
Year 9 Electives 2011 – last Monday Year 8
parents and students grappled with the choices of
subjects for Stage 5. The positive reception to the
changes which will enhance the breadth of
subjects and the quality of student learning bodes
well for 2011. At this point we are collating and
processing the choice forms. The final subject
selection forms will be issued very soon to all
students so the timetable can be formed.
Vietnam Veterans Day – last week recognition
was given to Eloise Griffin and Paul Webster (Year
10) and the iJazz ensemble group at this occasion
in Manly on Wednesday 18 th . I was very pleased to
present the speakers with handsome certificates
courtesy of the RSL this week. Recognition should
also be given to Cameron Jewell whose name was
inadvertently left off the list of performers last
week.
Year 9 Music Night – the performances of the
Year 9 students on Wednesday night showed how
rapidly they have progressed this year in their
musical studies. The night of classical music
featured Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert.

Congratulations to these fine musicians and thank
you to their teacher Ms Elisa Cranston.
Musicale 2010 – the most prestigious night of
the Band Program will take place on the 17 th
September at the Independent Theatre in North
Sydney. This concert is the last formal appearance
for our seniors before they graduate and
showcases the senior ensembles at their very best.
This is a first for the school program using a new
venue which will suit our elite performers so well.
Tickets can only be purchased online using the link
below. Scroll down to Buy Tickets and follow the
prompts. Prices are $15 for adults and $10 for
under 18s. Early booking is recommended to
secure seats.
http://theindependent.org.au/whats‐on/
Working Bee – early notice is given that the P&C
has confirmed the next working bee for Sunday
September 19 from 9 – 12:00pm. Some painting of
new storerooms under TAS and gardening projects
are in store at the moment. Please mark in your
diaries and note that Sunday has been chosen to
minimise clashes with sporting events. Further
details will be published in forthcoming editions of
the newsletter.
Gala Days Year 7 and 8 – congratulations to the
girls basketball team who were winners in the Year
7 Gala Day competition of two weeks ago. Year 8
had similar success with the boys basketball team
and the girls netball team being victorious. The
girls basketball team lost by one point.
Year 9/10 Grade Sport – We have just been
notified that the girls junior soccer and netball
teams have progressed to the Warringah Zone
finals next Wednesday. The netballers have been
undefeated throughout the season. The boys
basketball team will also compete in the Zone
Finals. We wish all teams success next week.
Tournament of Minds – congratulations to our
two teams who competed last weekend in this
event. It is the first time we have entered for some
years and all reports indicate that the students
gave a highly creditable performance (see later
report).
Pinestock – today the SRC annual student festival
will be held between recess and lunch. The theme
this year is agricultural with Chickenstock being the
subtitle publicised. The performances, stalls and
activities are all devised and run by students. The
day is a recognition of student maturity and
responsibility, and an opportunity for the SRC to
build upon the school culture of unity and
optimism.
Congratulations to:
Babette Auzins (Year 11) upon her selection as
a Youth At The Zoo (YATZ) mentor last week.
This responsible position is only offered to
those students who demonstrate, through
written application and interview, necessary
skills, knowledge, commitment and interest in
conservation, the environment and zoo
activities.
James Bailey (Year 10) who, last Saturday, was
one of two selected umpires who managed the
curtain raiser AFL game between the Bulldogs
and the Swans for the National Indigenous AFL
Carnival this week. This was a unique and well
deserved honour for this fine young
sportsman.
Corey Van Der Zwaag (Year 11) upon his
selection for the NSWCHS State Athletics
Carnival competing in the U17 Boys Javelin
event
Katie Garman (Year 12) who has successfully
combined her rehearsals and performances
with the Sydney Youth Philharmonic with her
HSC Trials. This sort of commitment has been a
hallmark of Katie’s secondary schooling.
at the calendar; you’ll see that there are 5
Sundays, 5 Mondays and 5 Tuesdays all in the one
month. What are the chances of this happening
again? Not for another 823 years!!!
SCIENCE TECHNO MUSEUM
All Year 8 students took part in the Science Techno
Museum and worked in teams to produce a visual
display on an item or process of technology. They
had to present information on the science behind
their chosen item or process, its impact on society
and the history of its development. As well as
visual communication, all teams had to be able to
verbally explain concepts and answer any
questions from an audience.
I was very impressed with the high standard of
displays this year. Student understanding of the
scientific principles was outstanding. As with
previous years, they chose to study a wide variety
of topics and worked efficiently and effectively to
create their final products.
At Freshwater Campus last Friday, the 5 teams of
finalists displayed their work and were judged by
various college principals, teachers, university
visitors and primary school students. The Manly
judges’ award for the best display was won by
“Batteries” by Michael Hutchison, Sam Phillis,
Scott Allen and Garen Douzian. These boys gave
detailed explanations of how all batteries work
and thoroughly impressed their audience with the
depth of their knowledge. The People’s Choice
award went to “Cops and Robbers” by Katrina
Lloyd, Georgia Brown, Maggie Bullen, Isabelle
Edwards and Jasmine Huang. The girls were
entertaining and kept their audience interested
with a variety of interactive, verbal and visual
explanations.
The other three teams “Trains”, “Sunglasses” and
“Rollercoasters” all presented displays of very high
quality. The judges of all of the Manly groups
commented on our students’ deep understanding
of their chosen topic and their ability to
communicate in a variety of ways with their
audiences.
From Head Teacher Welfare
This year the City to Surf event provided students,
who are members of the Band program, the
opportunity to participate in fundraising. Those
who volunteered spent all day helping to look after
/sort the gear of the competitors.
To reward the year group with the greatest levels
of participation, the Band Committee donated a
10kg block of chocolate. Year 8 won this year with
the block divided amongst the group and other
participants being rewarded with smaller prizes.
The Wednesday assembly presentation was
enthusiastically received!
Congratulations to all those involved.
Tournament of Minds Competition
Recently our school entered two teams (students
from Years 7 to 9) in the Tournament of Minds
competition which was held at UTS Kuringai
campus on Saturday 21/8/10. TOM is a problem
solving program for teams of students with a
passion for extending their creative problem
solving skills. One team entered in the area of
Applied Technology and the other team
Mathematics and Engineering.
Members of the Applied Technology team were:
Jack Cooper, Guy Clarke, Lauren Wood, Claudia
Leung, Oliver Cox, Jordie Scott, Fletcher Harris.
Their challenge was to discover ‘a lost city’ by
working through a number of clues to the present
day site. These clues helped them identify the
position of the lost city and understand more
about the life of its inhabitants. The task for the
team was to create a film that showed how they
solved the clues leading to the discovery of the
position of the city and present their discoveries to
a 21stCentury audience by recreating the city,
along with its culture and traditions.
Members of the Mathematics Engineering team
were:
Liam Lawless, Giles Devaney, Henry Coleman,
Khalia Ackerman, Maggie Bullen, Ella Seabrook
Callan Wilson
Their challenge was highly imaginative. In the
International Year of Biodiversity you have learned
that the fossil of an incredible new species has
been discovered. From a very small core this
species was able to spread out and cover a very
large area. The discoverer managed to send you a
little box containing her discovery before she
mysteriously disappeared. You now have to
reconstruct the discovery to get a better
understanding of how and why it grew so large
while unsupported by anything except its single
core. Your team must create the parts of the
specimen sent to you in the box. These parts must
fit into a box (cube) no larger than 10 cm x 10 cm x
10 cm.
Both teams did an excellent presentation on the
day and all members should be very pleased with
their individual contributions. Unfortunately,
neither team went on to the next level of
competition but all students had lots of fun
participating.
Many thanks to Mr Rutherford, Ms Yon and Ms
Haradasa for helping me run this program.
Sept 25‐26 SPRING VACATIONS to Sunday 11 October (inclusive)
A call to arms
(that’s painting arms)
Our fantastic new costume room has been built. I made a promise to
Mr Tomlin that if he organised the building I would guarantee the
painters and decorators. It’s a case of ‘if you build it they will come’ ...
so our Room of Dreams needs you. The P&C have organised a working
bee for Sunday 19 th September. Realistically there is more than a
morning’s work involved so I am going to ask for your help on both the
Saturday and Sunday. Please let me know if you can spare an hour or so
on either of these days.
