UH HILO GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Opportunity Grants Need based Opportunity Grants are available based on demonstrated financial need. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be filed by the UH Hilo March 1 priority filing date. Merit Based Achievement Scholarships Application forms for the scholarships based on achievement or service are available at the respective college deans, directors, or the Financial Aid Office, as follows: • Athletic (service) Larry D. Students must be a classified student at the Junior level or above at the beginning of the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded; be a resident of the state of Hawai‘i or have graduated from a high school in Hawai‘i; have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above; demonstrate financial need. Deadline for returning the completed application is March 1. Applications may be obtained from the UH Hilo Financial Aid Office. 8 • Big Island Press Club’s Robert Miller Scholarship Awarded annually to a Big Island student interested in the communications media. Applicants must have a desire for a career in the media. Applications available from Big Island Press Club, P.O. Box 1920, Hilo, Hawai‘i 96720. • Big Island Association of Nurserymen Scholarship of $1,000 annually to a student in Tropical Horticulture. It will be designated as $500 per semester. Full-time student at UHH, declared major in Tropical Horticulture with a GPA of 2.5 or above. Apply on-line at www.hawaiiplants.com • Big Island Sustainable Communities Association Scholarship $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to assist upperdivision Agriculture students at UH Hilo or HawCC who have demonstrated leadership qualities in school and in the community. Student must be a resident of Hawai‘i and a full-time registered student with a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA. Application deadline: May 1. • Hawai‘i Community Foundation Scholarships All students are encouraged to apply for the various scholarships administered by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Apply on-line by February 25 at hawaiicommunityfoundation.org • Hawai‘i Island Landscape Association Scholarship A $500 scholarship awarded annually to a student in their senior year at any high school on the Big Island, or currently enrolled or planning to enroll in any college or university, or any institution of higher learning in a program in horticulture, landscaping, or agriculture. Application deadline: April 30. • Hilo Orchid Society Scholarship A $500 scholarship is awarded to a deserving College of Agriculture student majoring in a discipline related to the science, hybridization, or production of orchids or other semi-tropical flowering plants. Applicant must plan to live on the Orchid Island with intent to work in the horticultural field and promote the flower industry. Student must have been a Hawai'i resident for at least one year and be at least a sophomore, full-time student with a high GPA in previous year(s). Submit an
application by August 1 to Hilo Orchid Society, P.O. Box 4294, Hilo, Hawai‘i 96721. • Kamehameha Schools Students of Hawaiian ancestry or part-Hawaiian ancestry are encouraged to apply for the Kamehameha Schools and Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation Scholarships. Application forms and information may be obtained by writing to the Kamehameha Schools, Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, 567 South King Street, Suite 102, Honolulu, HI 96813 or call on the Island of Oahu 534-8080, Toll-free 1-800-842-4682, Press 9, Extension 48080. For convenience check the website at: www.ksbe.edu/finaid • Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation administers scholarships with various eligibility criteria that are merit-based and/or need-based. The Foundation may administer scholarship for other organizations whose mission or purpose is consistent with those of the Foundation and Kamehameha Schools. The goal of this program is to support Native Hawai‘ians in pursuit of post-secondary education in Hawai‘i and the Continental U.S. This scholarship will enable students to successfully complete their course of study and acheive fluency in the Hawai‘ian language, to be utilized in their chosen professions within the communities that have provided family based sustenance to the student’s education process. In support of the aforementioned educational goal, students in receipt of this scholarship are required to study Hawai‘ian language. Phone (808) 961-0093 or Fax (808) 969-1555. • Panaewa Hawai‘ian Home Lands Community Association Scholarship Two $150 and two $250 scholarships awarded annually to dependents of the Panaewa Hawai‘ian Home Lands Community Association (PHHLCA) members. The applicant’s parents must have been a member of the PHHLCA for at least two years. Application forms may be obtained from the UH Hilo-Financial Aid Office or by writing to: PHHL Community Association, Scholarship Committee, 100 Ohuohu Street, Hilo, Hawai‘i 96720. 9 • Zonta International Jane M. Klausman Women In Business Scholarship Zonta International Jane M. Klausman Women In Business Scholarship is awarded to women studying business at the undergraduate level who have demonstrated outstanding potential in the field. The Zonta Club of Hilo scholarship is $1000. The recipient is also entered in the next level and may be eligible for additional awards. Complete applications must be received by the Zonta Club of Hilo, P.O. Box 1915, Hilo, HI 96721 by May 1st. General Information, eligibility requirements and application forms are available on-line at zonta.org or at the UH Hilo Financial Aid Office after November 1. • AmeriCorps National Service In exchange for a year of service, AmeriCorps members receive an education award of $4,725 to help pay off student loans or help finance their education. During term of service, AmeriCorps members earn a living allowance and may qualify to defer their existing student loans. Applications for specific scholarships are available from the UH Hilo Financial Aid Office (unless otherwise indicated) during the fall and spring semesters for the succeeding academic year.
