FINANCIAL AID OFFICE 2011-2012<br />
HILO, HAWAI‘I<br />
PURPOSE<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scholarship Program at <strong>the</strong> University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i at Hilo (UH Hilo) is to recognize and<br />
reward students who have demonstrated outstanding<br />
academic performance and to encourage those<br />
students who show academic potential and a willingness<br />
to participate in community activities. The scholarship<br />
awards imply <strong>the</strong> expectation <strong>of</strong> continued exceptional<br />
performance and leadership by <strong>the</strong> recipients in<br />
<strong>the</strong> years ahead.<br />
SOURCE<br />
UH Hilo scholarship funds come from various sources<br />
such as private donors, foundations, pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
associations, state and local business firms.<br />
SPECIFIC <strong>SCHOLARSHIP</strong>S<br />
Those classified (in a degree program) who are enrolled<br />
or plan to enroll as full-time students at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong><br />
Hawai‘i at Hilo may apply for <strong>the</strong> following scholarships:<br />
• Regents Scholarships for Academic Excellence<br />
These highly competitive academic scholarships are<br />
awarded to 20 incoming freshmen at any University <strong>of</strong><br />
Hawai‘i campus who are residents <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i. These<br />
awards, which are renewable for qualified students,<br />
consist <strong>of</strong> $4,000, a tuition waiver, and a one-time travel<br />
grant. Contact Barbara Bostwick for an application at<br />
SSB 211. Deadline February 1.<br />
• Presidential Scholarships<br />
These highly competitive academic scholarships are<br />
awarded to ten college juniors who are residents <strong>of</strong><br />
Hawai‘i and enrolled at <strong>the</strong> Manoa, Hilo or West Oahu<br />
campuses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University. These awards, which are<br />
renewable for qualified seniors, consist <strong>of</strong> $4,000, a<br />
tuition waiver, and a one-time travel grant. Contact<br />

Deadline February 1.<br />
• <strong>Chancellor</strong>'s Scholarship<br />
These highly competitive academic scholarships are<br />
awarded to approximately 18 incoming freshmen who<br />

are graduates <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i public high schools. This<br />
award, which is available for four years for qualified<br />
students, consists <strong>of</strong> an annual tuition waiver. Recipients<br />
will be invited and encouraged to participate in honors<br />
courses, leadership activities, and community service.<br />

Centennial Scholarship<br />
Centennial Scholarship <strong>of</strong> up to $1,000 are available<br />
to Hawai'i residents who graduated from a Hawai'i<br />
high school after 2006 who have a 3.8 high school<br />
GPA or scored a 1800 or higher on <strong>the</strong> SAT (27 on <strong>the</strong><br />
ACT). Contact <strong>the</strong> Admissions <strong>Office</strong> for additional<br />
information.<br />
• Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship<br />
Six or more $1000 awards given annually through Big<br />
Island high schools to graduating high school seniors<br />
with financial need. Contact your high school counselor<br />
for an application.<br />

Audrey Furukawa Study Abroad Scholarship<br />
This scholarship will assist students pursuing an<br />
opportunity to study abroad. Recipients must have a<br />
minimum 3.2 GPA and be accepted into an approved<br />
study abroad program. Interested students should<br />
contact <strong>the</strong> Center for Global Education and Exchange.<br />
The number and amount <strong>of</strong> scholarships will be based<br />
on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />
• Hawai‘i Island Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce<br />
Scholarship<br />
$2000 scholarship ($1000 payable each semester)<br />
awarded annually to UH Hilo students with declared<br />
majors in Business Administration and/or Economics<br />
for use in <strong>the</strong>ir junior or senior year. Contact Dr. Kim<br />
Furumo or <strong>the</strong> Financial Aid <strong>Office</strong> for an application.<br />
• Daniel G. Fox Prize for Excellence in<br />
Computer Science<br />
Daniel G. Fox was a UH Hilo Computer Science major<br />
who would have graduated in December, 1990. In his<br />
memory, <strong>the</strong> $500 Daniel G. Fox Prize for Excellence<br />
in Computer Science is awarded each year to <strong>the</strong><br />
incoming Computer Science senior who demonstrates<br />
<strong>the</strong> greatest academic achievement. Applications begin
y writing a letter to <strong>the</strong> Computer Science department<br />
requesting consideration and setting forth anything<br />
which <strong>the</strong> applicant considers appropriate in support <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> application.<br />

Masami and Mae M. Aito Excellence Scholarship<br />
Students must be full-time undergraduates enrolled<br />
in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Business and Economics and have a<br />
cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or above. Recipients must also<br />
be graduates <strong>of</strong> a Big Island high school.<br />
George S. Alves Memorial Scholarship<br />
Students must be full-time or part-time undergraduates<br />
in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural<br />
Resource Management, meet a minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0<br />
and have some degree <strong>of</strong> financial need.<br />
Aoyagi Family Endowed Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students<br />
majoring in business or economics. Students must also<br />
be graduates <strong>of</strong> a Hawai‘i Island high school, have a<br />
minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA and some degree <strong>of</strong><br />
financial need.<br />
Amer Ari Men’s Golf Success Scholarship<br />
Student recipient must be a full-time undergraduate and<br />
a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vulcans Men’s Golf Team and show<br />
financial need.<br />
James and Grace Arakaki Endowed Excellence<br />
Scholarship<br />
Scholarship supports a veteran, honorably discharged<br />
from active U.S. military service or <strong>the</strong> son/daughter <strong>of</strong> a<br />
veteran, honorably discharged from active U.S. military<br />
service. Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate<br />
enrolled in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Business and Economics, with<br />
a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or higher. Recipient must be a graduate <strong>of</strong><br />
a public high school in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i, preferably<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Big Island.<br />
Frederic Duclos Barstow Scholarship<br />
Scholarships for full-time undergraduate students <strong>of</strong><br />
American Samoan ancestry who are pursuing a degree<br />
that requires a math and/or science major. Students<br />
must be entering <strong>the</strong>ir 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year at UH Hilo.<br />
Recipients must have financial need and at least a 2.0<br />
GPA. The number and amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarships will<br />
be based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />

• Ruth E. Black Scholarship<br />
Scholarships <strong>of</strong> $200 or more awarded to students<br />
who demonstrate <strong>the</strong> potential for academic growth<br />
and achievement. First priority for scholarships shall<br />
be given to <strong>the</strong> sons and daughters <strong>of</strong> engineers,<br />
contractors and construction workers. Second priority<br />
shall be given to students pursuing constructionrelated<br />
fields <strong>of</strong> study: engineering, pre- engineering,<br />
architecture, drafting, carpentry, construction trades, etc.<br />
Third priority shall be given to all o<strong>the</strong>r well-qualified<br />
students. Minimum 3.0 GPA.<br />
• William Bonk Scholarship for Bhutan Students<br />
For students from Bhutan pursuing a degree at UH Hilo<br />
in <strong>the</strong> social or natural sciences, demonstrating some<br />
financial need and a minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.85.<br />
• Dr. John G. Chan Endowed Excellence Scholarship in<br />
Biology<br />
Recipients must be full-time or part-time, undergraduate<br />
students who have declared a major in biology.<br />
Preference shall be given to a senior who has selfidentified<br />
an intent to continue on to graduate school.<br />
Additional requirements include a cumulative grade<br />
point average <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or above and some financial need.<br />

Larry Child Scholarship<br />
$1,500 or more awarded annually. Recipients must be<br />
Hawai‘i residents. Four-year renewable scholarship but<br />
must apply each year.<br />
Paul Mark Clark/Carl Moon Scholarship<br />
Scholarship provided to full-time students majoring in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Performing Arts. Students must have financial need<br />
and minimum 3.20 GPA. The number and amount <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> scholarships will be based on availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />
• Criminal Justice Scholarship<br />
Annual awards for Hawai‘i residents interested in<br />
making community service contributions on <strong>the</strong><br />
Island <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i to needy individuals or charitable<br />
organizations or agencies that serve <strong>the</strong> needy. Amount<br />
<strong>of</strong> awards dependent on income from investments.<br />
• Howard and Yoneko Droste Endowed Scholarship in<br />
Art<br />
Students must be full-time juniors or seniors majoring<br />
in Art, with a minimum 3.5 GPA and demonstrated<br />
financial need.<br />
• Alec and Kay Keith Scholarship<br />
Recipients must have graduated from a Hawai'i high<br />
school (with preference given to Big Island high schools)<br />
or be citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. affiliated Pacific Island States,<br />
have financial need, and demonstrate academic merit.<br />
Incoming freshman should have a minimum 3.00 high
•<br />
•<br />
school GPA. Continuing and transfer students should<br />
have a minimum 2.70 college GPA. To be considered,<br />
complete <strong>the</strong> FAFSA by March 1.<br />
Dodo Family Endowed Excellence Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be full-time or part-time undergraduates<br />
enrolled in any area <strong>of</strong> study, with a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or<br />
higher. Some financial need is required.<br />
Faliuwseuw Endowed Scholarship<br />
This scholarship provides support to students from Fais<br />
Island, Yap State in <strong>the</strong> Federated States <strong>of</strong> Micronesia.<br />
Recipients must be full-time citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Federated<br />
States <strong>of</strong> Micronesia who were born and raised on Fais<br />
Island. Students must have financial need and a<br />
minimum 2.5 GPA. The amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarships will<br />
be based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />
• James W. & Eleanor B. Frierson Endowed<br />
Scholarship Fund<br />
Enrolled ei<strong>the</strong>r full-time or part-time. A written<br />
statement on student's background and how an English<br />
major or concentration will help to fulfill his/her career<br />
aspirations. Some degree <strong>of</strong> financial need. Preference<br />
will be given to students who come from a disadvantaged<br />
background.<br />
• Geography Founders Scholarship<br />
Supports full-time undergraduate students <strong>of</strong> sophomore<br />
standing or above majoring in geography. Must have a<br />
minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.<br />
Preference shall be given to graduates <strong>of</strong> high schools in<br />
<strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i.<br />
• UHH Gersting Scholarship<br />
Must be enrolled full-time as undergraduates enrolled<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Computer Science Department. Students must<br />
demonstrate an active role in promoting, sharing, and<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>ring <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> computer science on <strong>the</strong> Big<br />
Island <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i that may include voluntary computer<br />
services or tutoring.<br />
• Hawai‘i Educational Opportunity Fund<br />
One or more scholarships awarded annually to full or<br />
part-time undergraduate students, with preference given<br />
to residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Big Island. Recipients must have a<br />
minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 and some degree <strong>of</strong> financial<br />
need.<br />
• Hawai‘i Florists & Shippers Association Endowed<br />
Scholarship Fund<br />
Hawai‘i residents enrolled full-time with <strong>the</strong> College<br />
<strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource<br />
Management with an emphasis in floriculture and/or<br />
ornamental production. Minimum 3.0 GPA required<br />

with some degree <strong>of</strong> financial need. First year students<br />
are not eligible to apply.<br />
• Hawai‘i Veteran’s Memorial Fund<br />
$350 or more scholarships awarded annually to UH<br />
Hilo students with minimum cumulative GPAs <strong>of</strong> 2.5<br />
for Freshmen/Sophomores and 2.75 for Juniors/Seniors.<br />
Must be a Hawai‘i resident. Renewable but must apply<br />
annually.<br />
• Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship<br />
Scholarships ranging from $200 to $2000 are awarded<br />
each year. Recipients must be Hawai‘i residents with<br />
verifiable Community/School service activities.<br />
Four-year renewable but must apply annually.<br />
• Hilo High School Class <strong>of</strong> 1940 Scholarship<br />
One or more $750 scholarships awarded annually to a<br />
graduating senior from Hilo High School.<br />

IFSA Global Scholarship<br />
This scholarship supports first generation college<br />
students, preferably from Hawai‘i, who are participating<br />
in a study abroad program. Eligible students must<br />
achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate some<br />
degree <strong>of</strong> financial need.<br />
Daniel K. Inouye Endowed Scholarship in<br />
Astronomy<br />
The scholarship supports a high GPA-achieving UH Hilo<br />
senior majoring in Astronomy, with an expressed desire<br />
to pursue a career in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> Astronomy. Preference<br />
is given to graduates <strong>of</strong> a high school in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong><br />
Hawai‘i.<br />
• Frank T. Inouye Scholarship Fund<br />
Scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000 are awarded<br />
annually to students enrolled or planning to enroll in<br />
History, Political Science and Economics. Minimum 3.0<br />
GPA and have some degree <strong>of</strong> financial need.<br />
• Ronald S. Jitchaku Memorial Scholarship<br />
Awards in <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> annual tuition costs awarded<br />
to full-time students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> UH Hilo Liberal<br />
Studies/Administration <strong>of</strong> Justice Program. Recipients<br />
must be graduates <strong>of</strong> a high school in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong><br />
Hawai‘i. The number and amount <strong>of</strong> scholarships will be<br />
based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds. Minimum 2.5 GPA.<br />
• Phyllis Kahaney Humanities Award<br />
$300 awarded annually to a Humanities major,<br />
preference given to students age 27 or above and<br />
enrolled at least half-time. Recipients must demonstrate<br />
financial need and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
• Ka Mahi‘ai ‘Ihi o Wailea Scholarship<br />
Students must be juniors or seniors enrolled full-time<br />
in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural<br />
Resource Management. Students must be <strong>of</strong> Native<br />
Hawai‘ian ancestry, residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i and<br />
express an interest in sustainable agriculture studies and<br />
technologies.<br />
• Willard D. Keim Memorial Scholarship<br />
$500 or more awarded annually to Political Science<br />
majors with a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or above.<br />
• Kenneth K. Keliipio Scholarship<br />
One $1200 scholarship shall be awarded annually<br />
based on availability <strong>of</strong> funds to a full time student<br />
enrolled in <strong>the</strong> UHH Liberal Studies/Administration <strong>of</strong><br />
Justice Program. Recipient must be a graduate <strong>of</strong> a high<br />
school in <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i. Renewable, but must<br />
apply annually. Minimum 2.5 GPA.<br />
•<br />
Kohala First Year Scholarship<br />
Up to three non-renewable scholarships awarded<br />
annually to graduates <strong>of</strong> Kohala High School who are<br />
entering UH Hilo as freshmen. Awards cover tuition<br />
and fees, book and supplies, on-campus housing and<br />
meals, and personal expenses. Recipients must have<br />
demonstrated financial need. Preference given to<br />
recipients who are first generation college students and<br />
who have a history <strong>of</strong> community service.<br />
• Momoyo Hamano Endowed Excellence<br />
Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students<br />
majoring in any area <strong>of</strong> study, with preference given to<br />
graduates <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i Island high schools. Scholarship<br />
may be awarded annually to support a student up to<br />
four consecutive years. Must have some degree <strong>of</strong><br />
financial need and minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.5.<br />
• Paul J. Kopecky Memorial Scholarship<br />
Minimum <strong>of</strong> $500 awarded annually to students who<br />
are active in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> student services ei<strong>the</strong>r through<br />
student employment, activities, as a volunteer or in<br />
some o<strong>the</strong>r way. Minimum 2.5 GPA.<br />
• Lin Hing Society Endowed Scholarship<br />
Enrolled in at least 9 credit hours in a liberal arts or<br />
vocational education program. Minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.0,<br />
and financial need. Preference given to applicants <strong>of</strong><br />
Chinese heritage from Hilo, <strong>the</strong> Big Island or Guandong<br />
Province, China. The number and amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
scholarship will vary.<br />

J.M. Long Foundation Scholarship<br />
This scholarship is available to full-time undergraduates<br />
enrolled in health or business related majors. Students<br />
must be a Hawai'i resident, have financial need and<br />
demonstrate academic merit. The number and amount<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship will be based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong><br />
funds.<br />

• Masaya and Miyoko Miyao Mamo Street<br />
Endowed Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be full time student-athletes entering<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir junior or senior year. The recipients should be<br />
individuals who have demonstrated academic and<br />
athletic commitment and dedication and who exhibit<br />
strong team spirit, show enthusiasm for <strong>the</strong> game, and<br />
motivate o<strong>the</strong>r players.<br />
• Constance E. Masutani Memorial Scholarship<br />
Scholarship <strong>of</strong> $400 or more awarded annually to<br />
graduates <strong>of</strong> Big Island High Schools. Preference given<br />
to entering freshmen who graduated from Hilo High<br />
School.<br />
• George M. Matsumura Memorial Scholarship<br />
Two or more $200 scholarships awarded annually to<br />
part- time or full-time employees <strong>of</strong> KTA Super Stores<br />
who enroll or plan to enroll in <strong>the</strong> business field (with<br />
an emphasis in accounting). Minimum 2.5 GPA and<br />
financial need.<br />

NHERC Scholarship<br />
The Scholarship is for ei<strong>the</strong>r full-time or part-time<br />
undergraduates enrolled at <strong>the</strong> North Hawai‘i Education<br />
Research Center (NHERC). Recipients must have<br />
financial need. Preference will be given to residents <strong>of</strong><br />
Hamakua and Kohala. The number and amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
scholarships will be based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />
Noguchi Scholarship for Native Hawai‘ians<br />
This scholarship benefits past participants in <strong>the</strong> Na Pua<br />
No‘eau Program who are currently undergraduate or<br />
graduate students at any University <strong>of</strong> Hawai‘i campus.<br />
Students must show financial need and have a desire to<br />
make contributions to <strong>the</strong> Hawai‘ian community.<br />
Keru Oda Memorial Endowed Scholarship<br />
This scholarship supports full-time undergraduate<br />
students majoring in any area and meeting a minimum<br />
3.0 GPA. Eligible students must show financial need and<br />
preference shall be given to graduates <strong>of</strong> Big Island high<br />
schools.<br />
Osher Reentry Scholarship<br />
This fund provides scholarships to assist reentry students<br />
between <strong>the</strong> ages <strong>of</strong> 25-50 whose collegiate studies<br />
have been interrupted by circumstances beyond<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir control for at least five years and are resuming<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir studies to complete <strong>the</strong>ir first undergraduate<br />
baccalaureate degree. Recipients must also have<br />
financial need. Students must anticipate participation in<br />
<strong>the</strong> workforce for a significant period <strong>of</strong> time subsequent<br />
to graduation. The number and amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
scholarships will be based on <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds.<br />
• Louisa Pereira Endowed Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be a non-traditional student enrolled<br />
full-time in a degree program in any area <strong>of</strong> study at
UHH. Students must show academic merit as<br />
demonstrated by progress towards completion <strong>of</strong><br />
degree, statement relating degree being sought to<br />
future career plans, past community services, and some<br />
financial need.<br />
• Sharon Peterson Scholarship<br />
Annual scholarship <strong>of</strong> $1,000 awarded to a student<br />
enrolled full-time in <strong>the</strong> Teacher Education Program.<br />
Preference will be given to a student who has a record<br />
<strong>of</strong> volunteer service as an inspirational coach or teacher.<br />

UH Hilo Performing Arts Scholarship<br />
For students majoring in Performing Arts at UH Hilo.<br />
Recipients must have at least junior standing and must<br />
meet a minimum 2.0 GPA.<br />
UH Hilo Pride Legacy Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be active members <strong>of</strong> Pride Hilo, a UH<br />
Hilo Registered Independent Student Organization.<br />
Undergraduate students must have completed at least<br />
24 credit hours. Graduate students may also apply.<br />
Students must have financial need and a minimum 3.0<br />
GPA. One $500 scholarship will be awarded annually.<br />
• Que-Andrada Foundation Endowed Excellence<br />
Scholarship<br />
Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students<br />
who can demonstrate participation in activities<br />
related to Filipino culture, including volunteering<br />
for organizations serving <strong>the</strong> Filipino community or<br />
enrolling in programs or educational <strong>of</strong>ferings related<br />
to Filipino culture. Additional requirements include a<br />
cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.5 or above and some financial<br />
need.<br />
• Rotary Club <strong>of</strong> Hilo Scholarship Fund<br />
Scholarship <strong>of</strong> $1,500 awarded annually to fulltime<br />
students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Business<br />
and Economics. Minimum 2.5 GPA. Some degree <strong>of</strong><br />
financial need. Demonstrate volunteer service in <strong>the</strong><br />
community.<br />
• Sangam Scholarship<br />
One or more scholarships awarded annually. Recipients<br />
must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial<br />
need and be a graduate <strong>of</strong> a Hawai'i high school and/or<br />

at UH Hilo. This award may be renewable but students<br />

Recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate<br />
majoring in any area <strong>of</strong> Natural Sciences and show<br />
financial need. The student must be a first generation<br />
college student and a graduate <strong>of</strong> a small rural public<br />
high school on <strong>the</strong> Big Island, with first preference given<br />
to a graduate <strong>of</strong> Kohala High School.<br />
