Celebrating 45 Years of Service
From The President’s Desk...
On September 10, and 11, Erb hosted a 45th Anniversary
BBQ which included an outdoor display of our antique
trucks, tractors, cars and bulldozers, at our Baden terminal.
We were very pleased to celebrate with many of our
employees, neighbours, customers and suppliers.
As most of you know, we began our business with a
well-used 1956 International dump truck. Having driven
over the road transport for about three years prior, I did
enjoy the challenges of trucking. However, I was not quite
prepared to realize operating a dump truck on rough
construction projects was not the same as driving highway
transport. For one week, I bounced around on a local road
construction job, repaired springs, many flat tires, and
numerous other problems. I decided one morning, after
Viola, my wife of about six months, had gone to work in
Waterloo, that instead of going to the construction job, I
would take my truck back to Cooksville to the IH dealer and
park it until it could be resold! When I returned home, hitch
hiking and, finally, by bus later in the evening, I explained to
Viola, my short stint with my dump truck. She obviously was
not impressed and reminded me that my father had assured
her before we were married that the “Erbs” were not
quitters, rather they were strong minded, hard working
people, and they finished whatever they set out to do! I
respected her advice and encouragement, and with new
determination picked up the truck and put it to work on
another construction job. My family and I, and our
employees, need to be reminded that Viola deserves the
credit for where we are today!
We were involved in construction dump trucks, etc.
from 1959-1965. During those years, we acquired an egg
hauling business from Ray Baechler (Wayne’s father). In
1965, we bought our first refrigerated trucks to haul turkeys
Vernon and Viola Erb, Thunder Bay terminal, circa 1980.
for Milo and Ross Shantz - the beginning of our refrigerated
fleet. However, in those years, the trucking industry was
tightly regulated by the Ontario Highway Transport Board. It
was very difficult, and sometimes impossible to obtain
operating authority to transport goods for the public. The
only way you could obtain rights or authority to be a public
carrier was to apply and go through a lengthy hearing
process with your customers having to testify their need for
Erb’s service, and be able to prove in court, under cross
examination, that no other licensed carrier could satisfy their
requirements. The process was very costly and time
consuming but was good business for lawyers who
PAGE 1

specialized in transportation! The other way to acquire
operating rights was to purchase an existing trucking
company that held rights to haul between certain specified
cities or routes, or named commodities, named
manufacturers or shipping companies. Most times when we
applied to haul for certain shippers, other than Shantz
Processing, our applications were denied based on the
evidence given by other licensed carriers proving there was
no need to license Erb Transport! However, in 1970,
somewhat by coincidence, and I believe by God’s leading, a
trucking company who had opposed every application we
submitted, suddenly was for sale and sold. The buyer
wanted some of the General Freight Authority but was not
too interested in the Frozen Food portion. We immediately
contacted the new owner, and were advised they would sell
the refrigerated part of the business. He also informed me
there were many companies very interested to obtain this
transfer. With determination, and the Lord’s help, we
somehow managed to raise the funds, and convince our
lawyers and others that this was a class of operating
authority that would allow us to haul refrigerated foods
within Ontario without restriction of routes and shippers.
Herein lay the key to the rapid growth and success in
the years following for Erb Transport. We now could carry for
anyone shipping refrigerated food! We operated for many
years in a protected environment that also had its
challenges. We now had to guard our interest and were busy
objecting and attending hearings when our competitors
were trying to broaden their authority. A complete switch
from what we had been accustomed to. In 1988-89, the
system was deregulated. In simple terms, almost anyone
could buy a truck and be a “for hire” carrier, and, believe
me, that certainly was the case. Hauling rates were slashed
to unbelievable numbers, competition was fierce and many
trucking companies were not able to adjust to this totally
different structure in our industry. Many unionized trucking
companies could not change their costs quickly enough and
ended up going bankrupt. Erb Transport was not immune to
this drastic change. We went through some very difficult
times that I know I, and many of our senior people, will
never forget!
This Erb lamp was created by Scott Jones’ son,
Jonathan, age 16, whose hobby is creating with
stained glass! A wonderful gift he presented to
Vernon and Viola Erb for our 45th Anniversary
celebration.
PAGE 2
Today, we operate under a totally different environment
with challenges and concerns our industry is facing, be it in
the area of health and safety, hours of service, maintenance
standards, cross border security, proper protection of food,
and the list goes on... I admire how our people approach
and deal with all these new issues that are certainly
necessary, and a benefit to our industry and the general
public.
Thanks to all of our loyal employees who have adjusted
to the changes and frustrations over the years. This year
we’re pleased to recognize Ken Gerber celebrating 40 years
with Erb Transport, Floyd Gerber, celebrating 36 years, and
Byron Swartzentruber, John Verkuyl, Frank Grenier, John Eidt,
Al Burgers and Fred Ruby who are celebrating 25 years with
Erb. Also, special thanks to Dorene Rudy-Snyder who has
been very active as editor of the Erban Report for 17 years,
advertising, sponsorships, donations, and public relations,
etc. Throughout the years she was also my Executive
Assistant and involved in Human Resources, a member of
the Executive Team and Board of Directors. Her assistance
has been greatly appreciated. She tells us she may be giving
up some of her responsibilities by the end of the year.
As I reflect back over the forty-five years from our
humble beginnings, the many challenges, hard work and
long hours, disappointments and, sometimes,
insurmountable problems, my mind would go back to the
days when Viola reminded me not be a quitter! With
renewed purpose, God’s help, and the wonderful support
from family and employees, we together have built an
organization that is the envy of many in our industry. We
feel if our present and future management will dedicate
themselves to the task, as has been the case over the past 45
years, Erb Transport will continue to be the highly respected
organization, for perhaps, another 45 years!
Vernon D. Erb
President

From The General Manager’s Desk...
After all the challenges last year presented to the Erb Group
of Companies and the trucking industry in general, 2004 is
turning out to be one of the best years for trucking.
There are many reasons for the turnaround. The primary
one in my estimation is insurance. While I was at the head of
the list complaining about increased insurance rates last year,
the effect of the increases has been dramatic. If you were a
marginal carrier last year just getting your insurance provider
to renew your coverage may have been considered a success.
Not to mention, at what price will the coverage cost? Today
there are many carriers who have ceased operations as a
result of either unaffordable insurance premiums or they were
unable to secure insurance coverage. Before we blame the
insurance industry, it is important to know that the carriers
with the largest increases in premiums were the ones with a
poor claim’s history, poor safety record, lack of adequate
safety and training policies and generally competed by
charging low freight rates.
Wendell, Vernon and Grandpa Jake Gingerich, 1967.
In January, the long awaited changes in US Hours of
Service rules came into effect. Today, there is some doubt as
to what the final rules will be. The most important result was
an industry wide message to shippers and receivers of “You
cannot waste my driver’s time loading and unloading
anymore”. Receivers unloading habits don’t change overnight
but many are improving and those that are not are paying
ever increasing detention bills. What has helped this problem
is, now the majority of carriers are charging detention making
collecting the bills easier as it’s not just Erb who is charging
detention.
South of the border the economy is beginning to rev up
and with a high demand for transportation services within the
US, less American carriers are coming to Canada. All of the
above factors have put incredible demands on the
transportation industry. At Erb, we have had to decline or
post pone taking on new lanes or new customers for the
international market. In the past, freight rates were the most
important factor, followed closely by service level when a
shipper made the decision on choosing a carrier. Today
availability of resources (driver, tractor, and trailer) is number
one. Having the capacity to service our valued shippers has
given us the opportunity to get some long overdue rate
increases and surcharges as required.
This year our drivers received a 3% wage increase vs. 2%
for everyone else. While I would like to be fair across the
board, we need to face the reality that different jobs will
require differing increases in the future. We all need to
remember that all of us who do not drive a truck are support
personnel for those who do. I can foresee driver’s wage
increases out pacing the average industry increase for the
next few years. Thank you for your continued “word of
mouth” recruiting efforts for drivers. By far, this is the most
effective method of recruiting. It is our goal to make one of
the” Erb Group of Companies” your carrier of choice for
employment.
This year, Erb Transport tackled the CPC Pallet Exchange
problem head on. After 5 months of experience I am
pleased to report that we are achieving our goals and
through the efforts of all involved, our new policy is a
success. CPC pallets are the “forgotten child” that no one
worries about until they have run out of pallets. Over the
years we have staged many campaigns to solve our problems
with varying degrees of success. Unfortunately we were in
CPC agreements that made Erb responsible for tracking,
retrieving and returning CPC pallets to the shipper. The
compensation for these services was to be “included” in the
outbound freight charges. Our goal was to remove the
carrier from the middle of the transaction so the pallet is only
consigned from the shipper to the receiver on a one-way
basis. If the receiver chooses to return the pallet to the
shipper, a charge will apply. If the pallet is not returned, it is
the shipper who is owed the pallet, not the carrier. Our sales
/ operations people and especially, Wayne Stock, did an
outstanding job explaining the new program to our
customers and shippers. In the end, we have lost a couple of
customers but we were prepared for some fallout. We have
freely shared the program with other carriers and I am
pleased that many have adopted the same program for their
shippers.
By the time you read this we should have already moved
into our new Montreal terminal. We are all looking forward
to the new terminal. You can expect an open house event
sometime next spring.
In closing, I want to thank each person in the Erb Group
of Companies for their dedication, making our companies the
success they are. Your work efforts and loyalty are
appreciated.
Strategic Planning Update
As you are aware, the Erb Group of Companies has been
working on its strategic plan over the last year and a half. We
started by reviewing our mission statement of “Service,
Satisfaction, Success”, an excellent foundation for our
strategy. We then created the strategic plan or game plan for
the Erb Group of Companies. Our strategy details the overall
goals, why customers should deal with us, what marketplace
we wish to compete in and what our core activities should
be.
We were quite pleased with this newly created strategic
plan and proud of our efforts. We then involved the
Extended Strategic Planning Teams to assist us in executing
some of the action plans to accomplish the goals that we
had defined. As I have reported in the past, there has been
excellent progress made by these teams. However, in spite of
this success, we felt that there was something missing.
A strategic plan needs to be communicated throughout
the organization, everyone needs to understand the strategy
and understand how they can assist in accomplishing the
strategy. We always knew that we needed to communicate
the strategy throughout the organization, but how and
when? In addition to communicating the strategy, we also
had concerns about executing the strategic plan and
measuring our progress towards achieving it.
To deal with these issues of communication, execution
and measurement, we began learning about two new tools
called strategy maps and the Balanced Scorecard. “Strategy
maps are visual representations of an organization’s support
plans for its mission and vision. Similar to road maps, they
describe the route that will take an organization to its
destination. A well constructed strategy map communicates
a compelling, straight forward story of what an organization
must do to achieve its overriding objectives.” 1 The Balanced
PAGE 4
Scorecard is a tool that allows us to measure our progress in
achieving our strategic goals.
To date, we have created an overall Strategy Map for the
Erb Group of Companies. This will be used to assist us in
communicating the strategic plan to everyone here at Erb.
By cascading this map to all jobs or positions, employees will
have a simple tool to help them know what they can do to
assist in accomplishing our strategic goals, in other words
help to execute the strategy. The next step will be to create
the Balanced Scorecard for the Erb Group of Companies,
which will be our measurement tool.
Our priority now is to prepare the communication plan.
This plan will provide the details of how, when, who and
where we will be communicating the strategic plan to all Erb
Group stakeholders. Our preliminary plans are to have
meetings at all locations to introduce the strategic plan,
explain the details and answer any and all questions.
While it has taken some time and considerable effort to
get this far with our strategic plan, we are confident that it
was well worth it. We have already seen very favourable
results coming from our strategic planning efforts. It has
been said of strategic planning that it is a journey not a
destination. As we continue along this journey, we will keep
you informed of our joint progress. As always, if you have
any questions or suggestions, please give me a call.
Truck Tire Fire!
(l-r) Glenda Quinn & Puppy Dash, Art Quinn,
John Verkuyl
Congratulations to Art Quinn for receiving the Sup-Erb
Award for his courageous and heroic actions taken on
August 23rd, 2004 in Gastonia, NC. At 4 p.m., Art noticed a
truck at the side of the road and realized the driver was in
trouble. Art pulled over, got out of his truck and saw a tire
on fire. The driver had been trying to put the fire out with
his fire extinguishers - that did not work - the flames were
still ignited and very hot. Art took charge of the situation,
and ran to his truck where he had a large bag of bottled
water. Art quickly dove under the trailer, and threw all the
water into the brake hub and got the fire out. But, before he
could get back out from under the trailer, the tire exploded
in his face, blasting him away, leaving him face down on the
ground, and helpless. While Art was laying on the ground
temporarily deaf, blind, and feeling vulnerable, a man
appeared seemingly out of nowhere, as Art explains it. Art
could not see this fellow but could slightly hear him. He said
he was a salesperson from a company that sells medical
supplies. He brought out his bag of supplies and helped Art
tremendously as he was still in shock. This fellow never left
his name but as soon as Art was stabilized and the
ambulance on its way, the man left without stating who he
was. Could this have been his Guardian Angel? Art was
taken to a hospital where he remained for four days. He said
he couldn’t have been in better hands. Art was temporarily
deaf and blind for three days. The doctors had plucked
approximately 30 to 40 pieces of rubber from each eye. He
still has rubber imbedded in his face, arm and right hand
causing a little scarring. “Art you’re quite the trooper!!! You
are very lucky to be with us today.”
Art is well on the road to full recovery. Thanks to all the
people at the hospital in North Carolina who prayed for
him, took such good care of him, and made him feel
welcome. Art was so well known at the hospital that they
would say to him, “Well it’s Mr. Canada...you’re a walking
miracle...don’t you know?” with their accents and all. When
he left the hospital he received goodbye handshakes, hugs,
kisses etc... Among the visitors, while on his road to
recovery, was the Loss Prevention Manager of IFH
(Institution Food House) the company that he helped. Gary
Shore, the manager of IFH wanted to personally come by,
see how Art was doing, and to thank him immensely for
doing such a courageous act for their company. They were
so appreciative of the fine job Art did for them that they
couldn’t thank him enough. Because Art could not see very
well, this manager helped to feed Art his breakfast! Art was
so glad to finally get home after being in a strange place
with no family around.
Art would like to sincerely thank Erb Transport for
making him feel like a valuable employee and making sure
he was well taken care of during this horrific ordeal. A
special thank you to Bruce Jantzi and Tom Broda for
rescuing him, and assuring him everything was going to be
okay - that they’d take care of him and get him home...you
guys did a top notch job! Well, as soon as Art was released
from the hospital he had a plane ticket waiting for him to
come home. They kept in contact with Art’s wife, Glenda,
keeping her aware of what was happening. “I’m very
proud of Erb for their exceptional actions to comfort me”
and “Thank God, I’m okay...All’s well that ends well”, says
Art.
Dear To Whom It May Concern,
I’d like to take a few moments of your time and tell you a little story about
one of your truck drivers. I am 68 years old and I was driving to my
daughter’s place which I do once a month. I was driving down the highway
on 1-57 and my car started to shake and I blew a tire. I stood out beside my
car for nearly an hour and no one even stopped to help me. I was on the
road a long way from a telephone and a gas station. I was some scared and
a long came your red truck. The man must of sensed something was wrong.
He stopped his truck ahead of me and came back to see if I needed help. I
was so happy to see him I started to cry. He went back to his truck and got
me a drink of water and made me sit down. Then he changed my tire for
me and gave me a little talk about getting a phone in my car for
emergencies only. The man said his name was Chunker and he drove for
Erb Transport in New Hamburg. I offered him $10.00 for his help and he
refused the money so I am sending it to you and please make sure he gets
it*. Tell him I will never forget how kind he was to me. My daughter said I
should send his company a letter and I agreed. After he changed my tire he
put me back into my car and watched me drive off before he left. Mr. Erb,
thank you for having such nice men working for you. Tell Mr. Chuncker,
Catherine says thanks again and drive safe. I am not very good at writing as
my arthritzes bothers me. So my granddaughter let me use her computor so
you could read what I have to say instead of my scripply writing. Also, tell
Mr. Chunker I now have a cell phone with me when I travel. Thank him for
talking me into one.
Patty Hobbs, a Sup-Erb Employee!
In performing her regular duties of answering calls and
greeting visitors, Patty never fails to have a cheerful
demeanor, interacting with all callers in a pleasant and
helpful manner. She carries out Erb’s mission of ‘Customer
Service’ to the highest degree. She leaves a very good
impression of our company with everyone who has the
good fortune to hear her courteous voice over the phone,
or to meet her in person at the front entrance. I’d be willing
to bet that nervous interview candidates feel much better
after receiving a smile and a friendly greeting from Patty as
soon as they arrive!
But Patty’s company spirit doesn’t end with performing
her job extremely well. She also goes above and beyond the
call of duty, as she takes it upon herself to organize
countless fun events that both build employee moral, and
Marty, Marilyn and their little Emily!
In the summer of 2003, my wife Marilyn and I began the
formal process for adopting a child from China. Because of
the Chinese government’s one family one child policy for
controlling population growth, there are many children that
cannot be cared for by their birth parents and are left to be
raised in state run orphanages. Around five hundred children
per year are made available for adoption to Canadian families.
Earlier this year, we were sent a “referral” from the
Chinese Centre for Adoption that included details on a
beautiful, fourteen month old girl from Guangxi province
named Fu Qing Wan. Included in the file were photos of her
and an invitation to travel to China in mid-April along with
another fifteen families registered with our chosen adoption
agency.
On April 19th, on only our second day in China, we
arrived in Guangxi’s provincial capital of Nanning. That same
day, our group was brought to a social ministry building in
Nanning and ushered into a ceremonial room where we
waited for our children to be brought to us. It was a very
exciting and emotional moment - I can only imagine it to be
awaiting the birth of your child - for that’s what it felt like and
was to us. Without any warning, a long procession of children
suddenly came into the room, each carried by a caregiver -
some of whom were staff from the orphanage they’d come
PAGE 12
from by bus that same day. Slowly, the ministry official began
calling out the baby names, and thankfully our adoption
agency staff were there to help match the babies with the
right parents.
I recognized our Emily as soon as she entered the room.
The babies were pretty quiet until they began being handed
to their new parents. Just imagine a room filled with tired,
frightened and confused little girls - from around ten months
to twenty months old - suddenly confronted and held by
mostly funny looking, strange smelling and sounding people.
Emily cried too, but only for twenty seconds, and then just
began surveying the room watching all her little friends,
trying to figure out what was going on.
As was often the norm on this trip, we were all trooped
off to the tour bus and brought to another government
building nearby to fill out more paperwork. Most of the
children, including Emily, fell asleep in our arms. By the next
day, we got our first smile from her, then saw that she could
already walk a bit. After almost two weeks in China that
included a week in Bejing, sightseeing trips to the Great Wall,
the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, we returned
home to our family with its newest member.
We feel truly blessed and privileged to have had the
opportunity to start a family, and to have such a healthy,
bright, beautiful little girl. Though
the circumstances of Emily’s early life
contain an air of sadness, we are
grateful to the Chinese people who
were so hospitable to us, and so
happy for the children we were
bringing into our lives. If there is
anyone who has questions about
foreign adoption, please get a
message to me at Erb in Mississauga
and I’ll be pleased to be of help.
Floyd and Tim Actually Surprise Dorene!
On June 30th, we were happy to surprise Dorene Rudy-
Snyder at Baden with a “Semi Retirement” gathering. It was
quite a challenge to fool her into coming to an alleged
meeting in the driver training room, but thanks to Floyd’s
poker face we managed to pull it off. Dorene has been with
us since 1987 and has worked in many capacities, most
notably she is the vision behind nearly all of our promotional
materials. Dorene has been involved in producing our Erban
Reports, monthly newsletter, most of our ad campaigns and
has headed up our fantastic calendar designs year after year,
which have become collector items. She is a member of the
Executive Team and Board of Directors. Dorene has spent
Dorene and her support staff!
much of her time working directly with Vernon and Wendell
over the years and will continue for at least another 6
months under contract. I know Dorene has been traveling
abroad more frequently with her husband Doug that may
be an indication of things to come. Good for you, Dorene,
you deserve it, all the best in your health and happiness, it
has truly been a pleasure.
Dragon Wagon Time Again!
Hello, everyone. Well, the fall session of school has begun
and “yes” it is DRAGON WAGON time again. We just
received our new buddy today - Joshua Schulz. He wrote
a beautiful letter telling us he has waited a long time for
Grade 6 so he can be in this program. He says he loves pizza,
doesn’t like to be grounded, and is talented at skateboarding
(maybe he could teach Murray how to skateboard! - it would
get him to the truck stop quicker!) On weekends he likes to
play with lego. Murray and I are lucky to have been paired
off with great kids. Joshua really seems keen for the program
and who knows - maybe a future trucker.
Just as a review for those not familiar with the program,
we are paired up with someone in Grade 6 at Hillcrest Public
in Cambridge. Mrs. Myerscough has run the program for
about ten years. We now have our 8th buddy in the
program. We send letters, postcards, and pamphlets on the
different areas where we truck and give points of interest
along the way. We try to pick up little souvenirs as well for
them. We send a small pocketbook size map early in the fall
so the student can follow our routes. Great geography lesson
and makes for good mapping skills. The student writes us a
letter every month keeping us up to date on their school
activities.
The program ends in June with a picnic the parents put
on. We pick up the buddy at the school to ride to the picnic
and they enjoy using the CB. What a spread of food! (Better
than any truck stop!) The buddy writes and gives a little
speech about their buddies. Then after lunch the buddies
and their trucker buddies participate in games outdoors. I
PAGE 14
make Murray do this as he doesn’t write any letters or make
any visits during the year. I usually try to visit on the buddy’s
birthday and at Christmas with some gifts. Murray can
certainly keep up on the games with the running even if he is
usually the OLDEST trucker there. Yes, he is more fit than
most of the truckers! He enjoys spending time and getting
to know the buddy.
This program is an excellent way for the kids to learn
letter writing, geography, speech writing, map reading
(where many adults are not good) and many other skills.
Also, this pair of old folks really enjoys interacting with the
young folk, too! We are glad we can promote trucking and
have a great company to brag about. Thanks for the
sponsorship to this excellent program.
2004 “Big Bike Ride for Heart & Stroke”
Girl Power!
Men on the Move!
The challenge was on again! But, it was not between
the New Hamburg office and the Baden terminal - it
was between the “Girls” and the “Guys”. “GIRL
POWER” challenged “MEN ON THE MOVE”.
On Tuesday, May 25, 2004, the twenty-two GIRLS
pedaled their “GIRL POWER” bike hard and fast
through New Hamburg and raised $2,739.60. The
seventeen GUYS pedaled their “MEN ON THE MOVE”
bike harder and faster and made it through New
Hamburg in record time. They raised $1,474.00. They
really were “On The Move! Great pedaling guys!
Congratulations to Diane Heyer and Lloyd Snyder
who earned the privilege of wearing the “Crown” for
individually raising the most money for their team.
The “GIRL POWER” team received the “Team Spirit
Award” in recognition of their outstanding display of
team spirit. “You Go Girls”!! Girls Rule!!
A very big THANK YOU to everyone who
participated in the Big Bike Ride - especially to those
who succumbed to my coaxing to ride on the bike - as
well to everyone who pledged money, and to those of
you who did both. Without all of your extraordinary
effort it would not have been the successful day it was!!
The Heart & Stroke Foundation appreciates everyone’s
effort in raising money and awareness for heart disease,
stroke research, and education in the Waterloo Region.
Until next year............keep pedaling and pledging!!
A Handicap of One!
Marg Matthews, our Human Resources Supervisor in New
Hamburg had quite a summer. Most of her co-workers
know of her passion for the game of golf. Many may not
know how good she is! Those of us who have played golf
understand how difficult and frustrating a game it can be.
Marg works really hard at practicing and taking lessons over
the winter and summer. She simply LOVES to play. She
possesses a handicap of one and all of her hard work had
great rewards in 2004.
This summer, she competed in her sixth Ontario
Women’s Amateur at the Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury.
In 2003, she placed 14th, and this year her goal was ‘Top
10.’ Well, she tied for 5th with scores of 81-78-75! The
tournament was played in two days of very poor weather
conditions, with lots of rain, combined with high winds. By
placing fifth, she earned a spot on the Ontario Team, which
represented the province at the National tournament in
Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on August 17-20, 2004.
Her first exposure to the “Canadians” was 2003 in
Blainville, Quebec where her goal was to simply “make the
cut”. That meant placing in the top 46 out of 110
competitors who go on to play the fourth and final day of
the tournament. She accomplished that and ended up 45th.
This year with top 30 in mind, Marg again achieved her
goal. She finished 25th with scores of 74-82-76-81! She
helped “Team Ontario” win the inter provincial competition
by 12 strokes.
The National tournament has many of the country’s
brightest young woman
golfers participating. The
majority of the women are
on scholarships in the U.S.
and play twelve months of
the year. Of the eight golfers
Marg played with, only one
competitor was over the age
of 22! Good thing the ball
doesn’t know how old the
person is hitting it!
Next summer, who
knows what she has planned
but look out Squamish,
Erb’s 11th Annual
Charity Golf Tournament
The 2004 Erb Transport Charity Golf Tournament
held at Rebel Creek Golf Club, was a great
success. A field of 156 golfers took part, which
included a good blend of Erb customers and
suppliers. Everyone enjoyed a great day of golf, a
gourmet dinner, door prizes, and a beautiful
sunny day.
Outstanding support from the corporate
community, as well as, all the individual golfers
allow us to reach new heights in our fund raising
efforts. A total of $21,000 was raised for our
three local charities - Aldaview Services, Wilmot
Family Resource Centre, and Interfaith
Community Counselling. With this year’s results,
we have surpassed $100,000 raised since the
inception of this event.
10 th Annual Erb Montreal
Golf Tournament
The 10th Annual Erb Montreal Golf Tournament took place
on July 10th at the Caughnawaga Golf course. As in the
past, the tournament was a resounding success. Kudos to
Scott Jones for organizing this event year after year and
getting suppliers to contribute door prizes for all
participants.
The weather was fine with the exception of a brief half
hour downpour - permitting the players to return to the
clubhouse and refresh their drinks. A special thank you to
Mini-Tankers for supplying the refreshments, and to Neil for
spending his entire Saturday ensuring all the players’ thirsts
were quenched.
The employees and management from Ottawa were well
represented by Wayne Baechler, Guy Bellefeuille, Marc
Lamarche, Denis Lavergne and his wife Helen and their son
Robert Bedard. I was fortunate enough to spend the day
golfing with my 13 year-old son for the second year in a
row. I think I may have started a trend here as a few people
mentioned they might be bringing their kids next year...
took him to Florida, New York City and local runs.
Vern will never forget the day he went along with Carlyle Holst, delivering Tenderfresh turkeys and picking up Knechtel product
in Toronto for Knipfel Transport. Carlyle trucked right through without stopping until all of his deliveries and pick-ups were
made. Vern, being a very young, hungry, growing boy, thought Carlyle was never going to stop for a break. That example of
determination and drive to earn an “hour’s pay for an hour’s work” set the future for Vern in the trucking industry. If you
expect to succeed in any business, you have to be willing to work hard, making personal sacrifices when necessary. Carlyle is
still going strong, working as hard and faithful for our company as drivers 1/3 of his age”.
The 8 th Annual Erb
Employee Golf Classic
Wednesday, June 12,
2004, 11:00 am
What could be more fun than spending a day in the sun
chasing a little white ball with your friends? Sixty-four people
had a great time learning to know new people and see old
friends and fellow workers at Doon Valley Golf in Kitchener. It
was great to see some father/son teams, both young and
old, competing and bonding at the same time. The day was
topped off with a steak dinner and each player walked away
with a prize to remember the day.
Golf Éric Jones. Ne laissez pas les parapluies vous berner;
Mark Mountain who has been doing a bang up job
planning this event for the last eight years, was helped this
year by Roland Wolff, Bernadette Mayer, Wayne Baechler
and Dale Bauman. In January, Mark will start to plan the
event again. He will put on his “game face” and go forth to
ask for prizes so that even though some may not play up to
their expectations, they will go home with a prize and
memories of a beautiful Saturday in June. This coming
April/May be sure to sign up for a game of golf that will stay
in your memory forever. If you are good at getting prizes,
sign on with Mark to plan this event, which will also leave
you with a fond memory.
The Eric Jones Memorial
Golf Tournament!
On August 21, 2004, we were fortunate enough to be
sponsored by Erb in the Eric Jones Memorial Golf
Tournament. Don’t let the umbrella fool you; those of us
who had a late tee-off enjoyed an afternoon of sunshine and
good golf. Supper was excellent and we pigged out
(supper was a pig that cooked all day). There were also
prizes for everyone and we had an excellent time. Thank
you very much Erb for sponsoring a foursome and thank
you Scott for a good time.
Greetings from Rain Soaked PA!
As I’m writing this today, Hurricane Jeanne is on her way out
of here after a long night of rain and wind. Thank goodness
it was not snow! Exactly how much snow would we have
gotten from 4-6 inches of rain if it had been cold enough?
We are thankful that there has not been any severe flooding
in our area, but just to the east in Philadelphia, and the west
in Harrisburg, the last few storms have been leaving their
marks and causing lots of destruction. However, fall is a great
time of year here in Pennsylvania, and the vibrant colors of
the changing season are starting and promise to be a
beautiful display.
Our Elverson, PA, terminal.
Doug and I are happy to report that at this time, we
have 17 drivers working out of our terminal, though they are
scattered in 3 states and Canada. This is the most drivers we
have ever had, and we are very pleased to have them all
working for us. We will continue to add trucks when good
drivers come through our doors looking for work. Adam
Jantzi is responsible for dispatching our guys, and that is
working out very well for everyone involved.
When I think about it, it’s hard for me to believe that we
(Doug and I) have been officially working for Erb Transport
going on 20+ years now. We have certainly been blessed by
working here, through the good times and the trying ones.
Congratulations on 45 years to all the Erb Group of
Companies!
Unfortunate News from Our Baden Dock!
Udo Stagat, an 18 year Erb Baden dock employee, has just
completed surgery for tongue cancer. Presently, he is in
Victoria Hospital, London, and was recently visited by Warren
Erb, Jerry Baan and Ken Schmidt. They report that he is in
good spirits. He will soon be home recuperating and
preparing for further treatment. Please join us in your
thoughts and prayers as we wish Udo a complete and quick
recovery.
Congratulations Paul! We’re pleased to announce that
Hello from Mississauga!
Well, it’s that time of year when we read the events and
news from other terminals. This time around it’s a little
different for the Mississauga terminal. Yes, folks, they have
trusted me to write the editorial for the terminal, and with
the hope you will all enjoy!
We welcome the following employees who joined our
Erb yard & fuel island team! Peter Clarke - fuel island
attendant, Kevin Yates - shunter, Bruce Nelles - fuel island
attendant, and Anton Sivarajah - part time fuel island
attendant. And, congratulations to Alan MacDonald who is
now our midnight leadhand.
On our dock, Darren Turner has accepted a promotion
to the afternoon shift leadhand. Wishing you all the best!
John Turner left the Toronto dock crew, for the Toronto US
driver’s division. Good luck on your travels back on the road.
John Gyoroky left the position of the dock supervisor to
become our corporate dock manager. I know the Toronto
Terminal is very excited for him and wish him the best in this
new position (and for all you dock employees and
supervisors, beware! Ha ha, Kidding!)
This has been a hectic period for the driver services
department. We have lots of news and excitement to share.
Evelyn Harboway (formerly Sanelli) has retired to Lunenburg,
Nova Scotia. Her spouse, Alex, and Evelyn are enjoying their
home, neighbours, and new lifestyle in Nova Scotia. Coworkers
and other terminals miss Evelyn, as she truly was an
angel to work with. Marian Robin (formerly Voordenhout)
has taken a position on the afternoon shift as data entry
personnel. Because of her years of experience in the driver
services department, it was almost impossible to replace her
until Gail Rose and Coryelle Smart joined the Erb driver
services family. It was a transition that was stressful for all.
With two new people in a four-person department, stress
levels were up, workloads were large, but with amazing
coaches (Glenn and Ross), we were able to keep our heads
above water. Congratulations to Glenn and Ross for being
patient and maintaining the service and expectations level in
the drivers department. Congrats to Marian and Evelyn (we
miss you both!) and to Gail & Coryelle on their new
positions.
We welcome back John Kolonis to the maintenance
department. Congratulations!
Congratulations to all the employees of Erb Toronto! We
made it! Three years No Lost Time Due to Injuries - it was
tough, but since we are all a safe bunch, we made it! Our
sweaters have been ordered and should arrive for the winter
season. Let’s keep safe for the next couple of years ... and
many more! I know we can do it!
Well, looks like I really didn’t do too badly for my first
shake at this Erban reporter thing. If anything or anyone was
missed, my apologies. So, until next time folks, keep smiling!
me permet d’exprimer mon intellect littéraire... d’accord...
(réception), Daphne Prunelle (aide OS&D), Paul MacInnis
Summer and Fall News from Montreal!
Again, time to write the article for the Erban Report! It
seems that everytime I check my inbox that the memo for
this article with a deadline attached is there...sometimes it is
hard to believe we only publish this magazine a few times a
year! Not that writing this article is a bad thing, in fact I
enjoy it, it’s always a welcome change in my daily activities
and allows me to express my literary intellect...okay...stop
pointing and laughing please!
There have been many changes staff wise since the last
issue so I will take this moment to list them all. New drivers
include Satpal Sing Sandu, Joey Schembre, Michel Lord, as
well as Ricardo Arenas who returned to Erb from pursuing
other opportunities. New office staff include Kristy Poole
(data entry), Heather Brady (reception), Daphne Prunelle
(OS&D support), Paul MacInnis (dispatch support nights)
and Arar Basam (security weekends). Changes within the
office are as such, Laurence Rubin who assumed the position
of night dispatch and Linda Fuxova who acquired the
payroll position. New dock staff consist of Brian McCourt,
Welcome and good luck to everyone!
Just to give everyone an update on the outlook for our
new terminal, at the time of my writing this article the
office and dock are both constructed and they were
starting to drywall the office. We still have yet to connect
to a water supply but are working on that as we speak.
We have all placed our orders to Kevin Shantz for our
Lazy Boy recliners...I think I just heard him snicker as I
wrote that last comment...But all things considered our
outlook for a moving date of early fall looks good!
Well, I believe my time is almost up for this issue. I
look forward to our new start at our new terminal,
acquiring new business and providing everyone with
superior service as always.
Until the next issue!
