Saint Viator: Celebrating 50 Years
A DOLLAR . . . ALL FOR VIATOR . . .
No one has ever stood up and hollered louder
or prouder for Saint Viator High School than
Patrick Mahoney. For more than forty years,
Mahoney has been a teacher, coach, dean of
students, director of development, and most
importantly—head cheerleader. Even today,
Mahoney, with the assistance of a few senior
boys, continues the tradition of getting students
riled up during the pep rallies with his
infamous “two bits” cheer.
Pat Mahoney began his career as teacher and
coach in 1967, but quickly found his place as
dean of men. Students thought they were getting
away with mischief; however, the Irishman
from Wilmette always knew what they were up
to. Mr. Mahoney was a favorite of students,
rare for a dean. He viewed each student as
a valuable member of the community and
students recognized this in him. There was
not a “bad” boy who attended Saint Viator
High School, only students who needed a little
guidance. While his approach was “fatherly,”
he could be tough and compassionate at the
same time. A nod from Mahoney to “head
for my office” could scare any freshman, but
upperclassmen knew they were “in for the
lecture” and a good time.
Not only is he beloved by former students but
also by his colleagues. Pat Mahoney mentored
STAND UP AND HOLLER!
countless coaches and teachers. His genuine
concern for the well being of his colleagues
is evident everyday whether through a hug, a
greeting or a lengthy conversation. Fr. Dan Hall,
C.S.V., describes Patrick Mahoney as the “face”
of Saint Viator while Bill “Chico” Pirman calls him
the “anchor.” Whether he is the “face,” “anchor,”
or the “heart” of the school, everyone knows that
when Mahoney takes a microphone, we are in
for an emotional speech—complete with tears—
about the greatness of Saint Viator High School.
Plain and simple, he loves this community that
he has dedicated himself to throughout most of
his adult life.
Mahoney has been memorialized at Saint Viator.
The playing surface in the new gymnasium was
named for him in appreciation of his years of
service. This honor was chosen in recognition of
the way Mahoney “holds court”—recounting old
stories and telling anyone who will listen of the
great things happening at Saint Viator every day.
Pat Mahoney has influenced countless students
and adults over the years to want to be better, to
remember they were Viatorians. He is extremely
well respected and loved by students and staff.
He is truly a gentle giant.
