STONEFISH sit too deep to worry about –
except if you are a Dredge. One GIANT closed
ours for 3 hours. It got caught in the suction section.
Periodic Dangers -
• Whilst we have many sea creatures we
feel privileged to have in our harbour –
• SOME visitors are NOT the ‘welcome welcome kind’ kind
We often have Bull Sharks, & on occasions
a large Bronze Whaler appears plus other
sharks.
• Maybe worse is the Moreton Bay Box Jelly,
(Morbakka Morbakka or Fire Jelly ‘Tamoya Tamoya virulenta’) virulenta )
(the Warts on the Bell holds the sting).
These appear between Nov-Jan Nov Jan BEWARE !
17

Pets must be on a leash! Jokes aside
Moreton Bay Box Jelly (Morbakka ( Morbakka)
• They have a wide translucent Bell 6-18cm 6 18cm
with a pink/green tentacle on each corner.
Pinkish warts on the bell carry the stinging
cells. The tentacles are more than 1 metre.
If stung skin looks & feels it is on fire, with
raised white weals & red flare. Low back pain
muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache
& ‘a a feeling of doom’. doom . Douse with vinegar,
use cold packs or ice in cloth 5-25 5 25 mins. If
this fails, seek medical attention. They
appear between Nov & Jan / not every year.
Manly Marinas Inc – Bird Roost &
Dredged Materials Area
• Many years ago, following on an EPA
suggestion, the Manly Marinas built and
still inspect & maintain these two areas.
Peter Driscoll signed off on the original
drawings of the Roost & when built the
birds approved. We can swamp the birds’ birds
island for five days and the grasses die so
the birds feel safe. They have hideaways
in the bamboo too.
