Building strong kids, strong families and
strong communities
YMCA Calgary has been a part of the Calgary community for
more than 108 years. We thank you for choosing to build a stronger
community with us. Some of our 2009 highlights include:
• Breaking ground on our new YMCA in northeast Calgary.
This full-service YMCA facility is scheduled to open late
summer/early fall 2011 and will be located in the Genesis
Centre of Community Wellness. As well as the YMCA, there
will be a branch of the Calgary Public Library, soccer fields
and community recreational and human services spaces.
• Construction of the YMCA facility continues in the new
Alberta Health Services South Health Campus. This is
scheduled to open late 2011 or early 2012. This is an
exciting opportunity to engage patients, staff, physicians
and citizens to take an active part in their own health and
well-being. This new model will further enable the YMCA
to assist people to be healthy in spirit, mind and body.
• More than $834,000 was raised in our Annual Strong Kids
Campaign. This funding ensures that no child or youth is
denied a YMCA experience due to limited financial means.
The amazing support from our donors enabled 12,624
YMCA experiences for children and youth in our
community; experiences that allowed them to learn new
skills, develop self-confidence and just have fun and be kids.
• Through the Community YMCA branch, hundreds of
children and youth are safe, healthy and active each day
after school. These outreach programs continue to be
supported by generous donors and take place at a variety
of school and community locations.
We want to thank all of our donors, members, volunteers,
staff and community partners who helped make these and
other YMCA initiatives such a success.
We hope you enjoy the following YMCA stories—stories we
believe highlight our focus on holistic health and wellness,
our commitment to being a strong and viable charity and our
commitment to building community.
Volunteer focus
By Ernie Ooms
My name is Ernie Ooms. Volunteering at the YMCA is the most
rewarding and fulfilling thing I’ve ever done in my life.
Almost a decade ago, I was a cable technician whose only
hobby was fixing up the house I’d lived in for half a century.
Because I had worked night shifts for 16 years, my social life
was limited and I had become a bit of a recluse. At the age of 53,
high stress levels convinced me to take an early retirement.
After only a few months of being retired, I became bored. My
wife was still working full-time, I’d become disconnected from
my co-workers and the absence of any hobbies made the days
seem longer. I finally talked myself into buying a membership
at the Crowfoot YMCA, so I could occupy myself by getting
into better shape.
After a few visits, I quickly realized the YMCA is so much more
than a gym. I started socializing with other members, signed
up for a few programs and learned to ‘come out of my shell.’
A year after I joined, my wife saw how much fun I was having
and bought a membership too.
It is five years after I started volunteering and now the YMCA
has become a part of our everyday routine—whether my wife
and I are there meeting new friends for coffee, volunteering at
the front desk, doing stretches or working out. My wife is now
the volunteer coordinator of the weight floor and I’m a YMCA
ambassador, which means I get to welcome members at the
front desk and help out wherever I can.
I’ve never been happier, more social and, believe it or not,
busier in my entire life. I’ve met so many amazing people at
the Y—friends of all different backgrounds, cultures and ages.
Last year, I was fortunate enough to attend a Sikh wedding.
I had met the young couple’s parents a few years earlier at the
YMCA. It was a beautiful ceremony and it was an experience
I never would have had in my previous life, where I had not
really been exposed to other cultures.
My wife and I often host social events with our friends from
the Y. We love having potlucks at our house because the food
is always so good—so many delicious ethnic plates! Last
summer, we celebrated our 30 th wedding anniversary and my
60 th birthday, and instead of gifts, we asked people to donate
to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. That day, we raised over
$900 dollars for the campaign!
I never had my own children, but the kids that come through
the doors at the Y have become part of my family. I love those
kids—they make me laugh every day. One of my favourite
memories is when we asked the kids to write down what they
like about the YMCA. One boy wrote, “I like to come to the Y
because I feel safe.” That really stuck with me. If I can help my
community feel safe, then I’ve done a good job.
Immigrant program does more than teach English
By Gloria Palacios
I came to Calgary from Bogotá, Colombia in May of 2007.
First, I took English lessons at a Calgary college. It was nice,
but there was something missing for me.
Luckily, there was an opening at the YMCA LINC (Language
Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program at the
South YMCA.
I went downstairs to the classroom where I met some people
and my teacher. I think she was the best teacher I’ve had in
my life. She was really kind with me and created a good
environment for us all. The teacher started doing different
classes with us every day. I started speaking English where
before I was mute.
Before, I thought the YMCA was just fitness. The YMCA is a
lot of things. The people at the YMCA took my class to
Heritage Park, to the museum and the zoo. They share with
you and your family the culture of Canada. When you come
to the YMCA, you find smiles everywhere. I often find it is the
small things that make the difference.
One time, the teacher told us about Camp Chief Hector
YMCA. I was surprised because as students, we got the chance
to send our children at a very reasonable price. For my family,
this was important because we were new here in Canada. The
YMCA also gave us memberships. They gave us many services
and treated us just like everyone else at the YMCA.
At the YMCA, I finished the level four LINC program and got
the highest mark on the exam. Because of the confidence this
school gave me, I went to Mount Royal University and finished
my English as a Second Language studies. I then got a job for
five months as a computer tutor.
The YMCA gave such opportunity to me and my family, so I felt we
had to give something back. I decided to become a volunteer. My
volunteering started at the Community YMCA downtown with a
computer class. The instructor of the class gave me autonomy in
front of the group and showed that she trusted me.
In 2009, I came to volunteer at the South YMCA. I work
with the LINC students, sometimes with career advice and
sometimes with English skills. Usually, I come to the classroom
and we start reading. I listen to the students and help correct
their mistakes. I share my experience, to give them confidence
and the inspiration to do better. That is my goal.
“The YMCA gave
such opportunity to
me and my family,
so I felt we had to
give something back.
I decided to become
a volunteer.”
Strong Kids Campaign funds life fundamentals
By Jodi Galindo
The YMCA definitely builds strong kids! My greatest YMCA
experience has been watching my two children blossom
through the programs. For us, it’s like our second family and a
safe haven. My kids know every YMCA staff member by name
and every staff member knows them.
We first got involved with the YMCA in 1997. At that time,
we didn’t have a lot of anything—we were essentially rebuilding
our lives. I wanted us to have a place to go that was family
oriented. Most of the other gyms and fitness places out there
will let you go, but not your kids.
We were so lucky the YMCA had the Strong Kids fund. This
fund has let Hailey participate at the Y since she was about two
years old, and Caiden, pretty much since he was born. Through
the years, we’ve taken almost every program the YMCA has to
offer—from preschool classes, swimming, basketball, soccer,
dance, gymnastics and Camp Chief Hector.
For my kids, the financial help provided by the YMCA has
opened doors to trying new things they probably wouldn’t have
had an opportunity to otherwise do. Without this place, I don’t
think Caiden would have decided competitive swimming was
something for him. Here, he has found his passion for it.
Hailey’s favourite is the Leadership program. She has
learned to be stronger and to take more responsibility.
Hailey has given a lot of speeches and feels confident in
front of a group. The YMCA has taught my kids about
accepting people and their differences, and it’s helped them
to be more respectful.
What’s really important to me is my family knows they have
a safe place to go and somewhere that they can bring their
friends.
Along with strong kids, the YMCA without a doubt, builds
strong families. My daughter and I take classes together and
we work out together. This is a place where you can share that
special time with your family, which is very important. And,
with services like child care when the kids were young, the
YMCA allowed me to enjoy a little of my own time, which
gave my mind and body a chance to recharge.
We have all made many friends here. That’s one of the biggest
things too—that you make those strong connections. We have
all had bad things happen in our lives and this is a place where
you can find support. The YMCA staff have helped me recover
through the ups and downs with my health.
The YMCA has been like an extended family for us. Over the
years, it has made a huge difference to me, Hailey and Caiden.
I just don’t think they would be the kids they are today if it
weren’t for the YMCA.
My home away from home
By Elsa Majano
I have been a staff member at YMCA Calgary since 1991. The first
thing I noticed about the YMCA was that the people here are so
very nice. I hadn’t really seen anything like that before.
I came to Canada from El Salvador in 1987. First, I worked
in a restaurant as a prep-cook. Then, I heard about the job
at Eau Claire YMCA in the laundry. I worked there for many
years and then, in 2002, I came to Shawnessy YMCA to look
after the Women’s Plus locker room.
At Shawnessy YMCA, many families come to visit. Here, there
is lots of laughing and you get to see many happy, young faces.
I like working at the Calgary YMCA. People here tell me they
like me because I am very nice and keep the place tidy and
clean. I enjoy my job in housekeeping because I like helping
people and making sure they have everything they need. I
always try to keep a big smile on my face and make everyone
feel welcome here. I spend a full day at my job and still feel
happy when I go home.
I can always come to my supervisors about anything—they always
have time for me. My coworkers are always smiling. They help
anyone out any time they need something. Sometimes, they call
me to the front desk to speak to people in Spanish. I teach a little
Spanish to the staff and some of the members as well.
I have helped out with the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign,
asking others to contribute to help kids come to the YMCA.
At Christmas time, I like to decorate the tree and front desk.
I put up decorations for Halloween too, and people tell me
how nice everything looks. In the summer, the YMCA has a
big Stampede Breakfast, which everybody enjoys.
The members like to talk to me and I like to talk to them.
They ask me about my home country, how my kids are doing,
why I came to Canada and how I’m liking the cold and snow.
At Christmas, some of them even give me gifts, which is
very special.
The YMCA is a big part of my life. The YMCA has offered
many programs for my three kids. They got to go to Camp
Chief Hector and they especially like the swimming pool.
The staff also taught me how to swim. When my son grew up,
he worked in the men’s locker room and volunteered at the
front desk. My daughter also volunteered at the front desk.
My grandson was in child care and he loved the staff there.
I am 60 years old now. I tell my husband when I retire, I would
still like to keep working here part-time. What can I say? The
YMCA is like my second home.
“I like helping people
and making sure they
have everything they
need. I always try to
keep a big smile on
my face and make
everyone feel welcome
here. I spend a full
day at my job and
still feel happy when
I go home.”
YMCA Calgary employs more than 1,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal staff and
more than 900 volunteers who give approximately 90,000 hours each year.
A YMCA family
By Jacquie O’Donoghue
We moved to Calgary in 1969—my husband and I, and our nine
children, aged 2 to 17. We lived just around the corner from the
South YMCA. When we first went there, we were told there was a
three-year waiting list! At that time, the South YMCA was really
hopping—on some registration days, there were line-ups out the
door and down the street!
It took a couple of years to get in, but when we did, the YMCA
became such a big part of our family life. All my kids who didn’t
know how learned to swim at the South YMCA. Five of them
took their lifeguard training and became lifeguards there. They
also got into competitive swimming with a club that started out
at the South YMCA.
I was a YMCA volunteer swimming instructor for 15 years until
1986—I taught a lot of kids how to swim! And today, I still get
together with the people who worked with me.
The YMCA has stayed with us. The friends my kids made at the
YMCA are still their friends today. And now my grandchildren
are also involved. Two of my granddaughters were counselors at
Camp Chief Hector YMCA. And, my seven-year-old grandson
went to day care at the South YMCA and is now in the afterschool
program at the branch.
The YMCA is a special place to be. It’s family-oriented, a safe
place and the staff are wonderful. It’s important to me, my kids
and their kids. I still come to the South YMCA three or four
times a week—it’s such a great part of my life!

My own YMCA success story
By Fatuma Mwenge
I have been a full-time student in the YMCA
language program at the South YMCA for two
years. It has been wonderful and I feel lucky
to be here.
I was never interested in doing exercise,
despite my doctor’s advice that I needed it
and his warning that without it, my health
and life expectancy could be seriously
compromised.
My doctor was right. Of that, I had no doubt,
because there were times when my heart raced
and pounded. These episodes left me quite
breathless and worried. I have children, who
fill my heart with their beauty and love. They
are still young and I want to be with them for
a long lifetime. Still, I did not start to exercise
or diet.
Then one day, my YMCA English teacher
took our class to the YMCA gym. She showed
us the machines and explained how to use
them. I was curious and tried one, surprised to
find exercise is enjoyable. When class ended,
I found it was much too soon, so I stayed an
hour longer. Now, using the workout facilities
is a habit.
The YMCA language program and going to
the gym have changed everything. My mind is
in tune with my body and my body feels well—
the more exercise I do, the better I feel. I no
longer pause on every step of a stairway to
catch my breath, but walk up and down easily.
My heart no longer races, but maintains a
calm and steady beat. And, the more English
I know, the easier it is to communicate with
other people.
I appreciate what the Calgary YMCA has given
to me. I am confident in my English and my
fitness. Being a part of the YMCA is a good
way of living.
“The YMCA
language program
and going to the
gym have changed
everything. My mind
is tune with my body
and my body feels
well—the more exercise
I do, the better I feel.”
A page in YMCA history
By Howard Miller
I joined the YMCA when I was 17-years-old. That was 80 years ago.
I’ve immensely enjoyed my association with the YMCA. I give
them credit for everything I’ve achieved in a business way, and
I mean that most sincerely. The YMCA has done far more for
me than I’ve ever done for them. I’ve said it often and I mean it.
The YMCA has given me an opportunity to serve others. First,
when the depression was on, I volunteered to run a lot of
programs at the Winnipeg YMCA. We had classes on public
education and on different religions. We had daily outings and
dances, and started a canoe and swimming club.
In 1940, I went into the YMCA War Services, which ran
recreation camps in military bases across Canada. We offered
programs for the soldiers, like dance, classical music and
sports. I was then asked to go overseas and take charge of the
YMCA services for Canadian soldiers stationed in England.
After a move to Toronto in the 50s, I joined the Board of
YMCA Canada. At that time, I was asked to take a look at the
role of women in the YMCA. I worked with every YMCA across
Canada. Initially, there was some strong opposition, but after
about a year, the motion passed to include women as part of
the YMCA. Today, women comprise more than half the YMCA
membership. I always think that was one of the greatest things
I ever did in the YMCA and it’s the thing I boast about most.
In 1956, I came to Calgary where I joined YMCA Calgary’s
board. At that time, Calgary had only one YMCA, so we
started a fundraising campaign to build two full-service
family YMCAs. It was the largest campaign ever held in
Calgary by anybody. In 1963, we opened the North and
South Family YMCAs simultaneously. Never before had a
single association opened two facilities on one day!
The YMCA is a place that responds to community needs. I am
proud to be a part of it.
