VISION AND MISSION
ABOUT OUR COVER
One day a woman came into Unity’s office to get a “little advice.”
Sonshine Troche is no ordinary woman. Now it’s common for Sue
Korte Regetz and Maggi Spartz to sometimes spend up to 2 hours
in these “advice” sessions. And people—regardless of circumstance—
walk out armed with information, resources, hope and a LOT of
things to think about. Some come back for more, some don’t.
Sonshine told us her story, shared her vision and gave us a lot to
think about. Sonshine kept coming back until she had constructed a
new, greatly needed non-profit—Worthy Women Recovery Home.
We hope you enjoy reading about Sonshine and her passion to break
cycles of recidivism among La Porte County women with children of
their own. She’s passionate, determined and is a role model for
others as a “Power for Good.”
Unity Foundation is open 24 hours a day at our Website,
VISION FOR LA PORTE
COUNTY
We envision La Porte County to be
a dynamic county, recognized for its
investment in its people, economic
vitality, and rich quality of life, and to
be a model for innovative leadership
and supportive citizenry.
Created by ordinary citizens in 1992.
MISSION
Unity Foundation will strengthen
La Porte County now and forever by:
• Building permanent endowments
• Providing leadership
• Offering philanthropic vehicles
for everyone
• Being a catalyst for social
and economic vitality
The National Standards Seal by our name indicates official
confirmation from the Council on Foundations that we have
met the most rigorous standards in philanthropy. It affirms our
commitment to financial security, transparency and
accountability. It says our grantmaking includes an open,
competitive process designed to address the changing needs of
our community. The National Standards Seal also confirms our
history of honoring donors’ wishes—to support the arts,
cultivate gardens, save endangered species, cure illness,
expand literacy, feed children—and support countless other
important causes.
DEAR FRIENDS of UNITY,
As the largest grantmaking organization in La Porte County, our impact is now becoming far greater than the sum of our
grants. We are privileged to be in a position to help strengthen our community and be a part of leading La Porte County
into the future. We can help by exploring and researching what makes communities strong, by championing a common
vision, by convening people on important issues and by launching projects that pave the way for better days ahead.
In 2012 Unity Foundation celebrates its 20th Anniversary, while the oldest community foundation, the Cleveland Foundation,
is nearing its 100th! Community Foundations are uniquely positioned to have a broader and longer view on all aspects of
the community. We are all about permanent funds that keep on giving, year after year, for whatever you want.
Unity Foundation is looking to be more impactful. We focus on three areas: Strengthening Community, Strengthening
Unity and Building Assets. Having a common vision is critical to strengthening our community. A vision should inspire.
We rediscovered the following vision statement. The more we looked at it, the more we got inspired. What made this
vision particularly powerful was the fact that it was created 20 years ago. It’s still valid today.
We envision La Porte County to be a dynamic county, recognized for its investment in its
people, economic vitality, and rich quality of life, and to be a model for innovative
leadership and supportive citizenry.
Unity has always worked to strengthen the community and recently we identified and responded to an unexpected
opportunity. We secured the property at 1010 Pine Lake Avenue (site of the former Roscoe’s restaurant) to keep La Porte’s
front door open to residents and visitors, and welcoming to families and businesses who may be considering moving here.
We call it “Love Our Lakes” and are partnering with the La Porte Park Foundation to preserve the view of Pine Lake and
to create a public space to be enjoyed for generations to come. See page 13 for more or visit www.uflc.net for progress.
We need your help. Please consider “adopting” the Vision for La Porte County. Visit our website for details on how you
can ‘sign up” and join other like minded individuals and groups. You can also help by supporting Unity operations and
projects, such as the Love Our Lakes project or by making gifts to one or more of our funds. Oh, and look for more good
things to come!
Together, we can be a Power for Good. . .for generations to come.
Imagine future generations looking back at this time and thanking you. Thanking
you for the beauty of an unspoiled natural landscape… the financial support of a
scholarship… the programs that help the young and the elderly. As the Shirley
Heinze Land Trust and Unity Foundation demonstrate, it takes a dedicated effort
today to make a foreseeable future. If your charitable bequest to one or more of
Unity’s family of funds equaled only five percent of your assets (a nickel of every
dollar), your legacy will be a beautiful sight indeed. Shirley Heinze Land Trust has
established endowment funds with area Community Foundations. They could put
your nickel to good use!
ADDING YOUR NICKEL’S WORTH
It’s easy not to be prepared for the unexpected.
One of the most valuable resources of information
is the United Way phone number 2-1-1. Throughout
Indiana, 2-1-1 connects Hoosiers who have
needs with organizations and programs that offer
social services.
HOMELESS STATISTICS:
Predictors of Homelessness for Humans
• Poverty
• Unemployment or underemployment
• Low literacy and educational attainment levels
• Lack of affordable housing options
• Predatory lending
• Lack of insurance/underinsured/chronic illness
• Deinstitutionalization (from correctional or mental
health facilities)
• Mental illness
• Substance abuse
• Physical and/or sexual abuse
• Single parenthood at young age
Animals
• 71% of cats and 60% of dogs that enter animal
shelters (4–6 million) are euthanized each year.
According to The Humane Society of the United States.
No matter what an organization’s goals—whether it provides housing or shelters animals
(or protects the environment, supports the arts, awards scholarships, etc.)—
it is individuals who ultimately benefit. Even though these groups help many, most
work with few resources and need our support to continue their missions.
If you and everyone who has a safe, secure home showed their thankfulness by donating
only one of every twenty dollars of your financial legacy to Unity (just five
cents on the dollar), there would be many more happy endings to stories like this one.
GUARANTEED FIXED INCOME FOR LIFE
What is a Charitable Gift Annuity?
It’s a tool that allows you to arrange a generous
gift to your community, and at the same time provide
a new source of income you can count on.
Example:
Mr. Jones turns 75 soon, and wants more income.
He makes a gift to Unity of $100,000
and signs an agreement paying him 6.4% or
$6,400 annually for the rest of his life. He may
also get a charitable deduction and other tax
benefits.
GROUPS HARNESS THE POWER OF MATCHING DONATIONS
On a case-by-case
basis, Unity’s Board
challenges non-profits
TOP 10 REASONS LA PORTE COUNTY WOULD BE DIFFERENT
Without Unity:
1. Donors would lose a trusted, professionally-managed
resource and access to easy philanthropy.
2. Fewer scholarships awarded and fewer of our students
would be able to attend college.
3. More pressure on local non-profits; no endowment
income, fewer grants, etc.
4. Dollars would leave the community forever—taxes, lack
of planning.
5. Non-profits would have one less “friendly” and “local”
funder to go to.
6. The community would lose a partner in planning, studying
and addressing many issues.
7. Non-profits would lose a valuable source of technical
assistance, training and a good listener.
8. The community would lose a facilitator, convener and
champion of innovation.
9. Fewer charitable dollars and reduced philanthropy all
around…no one to champion “forever” giving.
10. Donors would be more burdened- more groups asking for
money, no anonymity and fewer gifting vehicles to help
them.
UNITY PARTNERSTO KEEP PART OF PINE LAKE AS A COMMUNITYTREASURE
Unity Foundation is teaming up with the La Porte Park
Foundation to protect one of the beautiful views of Pine
Lake. Unity has secured the purchase of the property at
1010 Pine Lake Avenue, the site of the former Roscoe’s
restaurant.
The project, called “Love Our Lakes” includes a vision to
preserve the beauty of the lakefront and enhance the community
for generations to come. The La Porte Park Foundation
cleaned up the property and plans are being made to
find the best possible public use for the nearly two acres.
Maggi Spartz, said, “It all started when someone noticed
the “For Sale” sign and asked ‘What’s going to go there?
Would it be something to block the awesome view?’ This
happened at the same time Unity was looking to have an
even greater impact on the community. Our role here is to
get things going and coordinate action.”
Steve Bernth, president of the La Porte Park Foundation
said, “Unity Foundation is quarterbacking a project that
no one group could do alone. We are excited about the potential
of this project as it becomes something people can
appreciate and enjoy for many years.”Our Lakes”!
THE POWER OF A NICKEL IN LA PORTE COUNTY
Wouldn’t it be nice if 100 years from
now the people in your community appreciated
something you did? Don’t
think it can happen? Others have done
it, like John Barker or Maurice and
Herbert Fox. Only you don’t have to
be as wealthy as the Barkers or
Foxes…In fact it only takes a nickel!
You may contribute any amount to the project or follow
the progress at www.uflc.net—please help us all to “Love
Our Lakes!”
Think of your home, bank account(s),
investments, life insurance, 401(k),
IRA, etc. It is estimated that in the next
10 years, $1.5 billion of money and
property (together called assets) will be
passed on from residents of La Porte
County to descendants, relatives,
friends, charities, and (too much!) to
the government. If we all increased the
amount to charities by giving assets to
be set aside forever, we would be just
like the Barkers and Foxes. You may reduce
taxes and control what is “given”
to the government and what stays here,
in your own community.
Let’s say we set a goal to give one dollar
of every twenty to be permanently
used for our community’s future. That’s
only 5% but collectively amounts to
$77 million. These assets will generate
nearly $4 million to be used every year
to improve lives in La Porte County.
Now add your name next to Barker
and Fox!
There are many ways to do this and a
Professional Advisor can help. The
staff at Unity also helps provide confidential
and free assistance.
So, if everyone would leave a shiny
nickel for every dollar they have accumulated…to
the community where
they have been supported…La Porte
County will have a brighter future!
