Introduction About Service Technician Workbench Service Technician Workbench (STW) is Caterpillar's latest achievement in delivering service support information to dealerships. The Caterpillar version of STW is a software tool that provides access to applications that provide service support information to service technicians. As information is gathered an electronic Service Report is generated and portions of can be populated. Information is accessed through the following STW components: • Component Based Troubleshooting (CBT) • Technical Analysis (TA) • Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) • Challenger Technician: (CT - for servicing Challenger 35, 45, and 55 agricultural tractors M300 Technician (M300 - for servicing M300 series Excavators) • Service Information System (SIS) • Data View • Flash File Search (FFS) Caterpillar Inc. recommends the use of the latest version of STW, ET, and SIS Data. This insures that you are using the most up to date technical data. 6
Computer/Software Hardware Recommendations While Caterpillar continues to strive for the highest quality software solutions, it is impossible for our developers to test every solution on the limitless combinations of hardware available. It is for this reason that Caterpillar strongly recommends that dealers purchase IBM, Dell, or Hewlett Packard products. For best performance of these applications follow the computer specifications below. The following configuration is recommended to run Service Technician Workbench on a desktop computer: Desktop • 2.4 Ghz MHz Pentium-compatible processor • 512 MB RAM (256MB) Minimum (1 GB recommended) • 40 GB hard disk drive with at least 1.5 GB hard drive space available • File transfer device (such as a 3.5" disk drive or USB port and compatible Jump-drive) • Third generation DVD drive • 17" VGA (1024 x 768 256 Colors) adapter and monitor. • Hewlett Packard LaserJet V or compatible printer • Pointing device built in or external, such as Microsoft Ballpoint Mouse • Emulation or LAN adapter and software suitable for the dealer host computer • Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.5 and 6.0; browser must support Java Script and HTML, Version 2 • TCP/IP Dial-up Adapter (needed only for communicating between Service Information System and Service Advisor or DBS through Parts Integrator). Also need TCP/IP Dial-up Adapter to send and receive Feedback in STW. • RS232 port with 16550AF UART or PCMCIA card to RS232 adapter or USB to RS232 adapter (Cat part # 237-7547) • Ethernet or USB port (needed only for users with Data View II) Laptop • 1.4 GHz Pentium-compatible processor • 512 MB RAM Minimum (1 GB recommended) • 20 GB hard disk drive with at least 1.5 GB hard drive space available • File transfer device (such as a 3.5" disk drive or USB port and compatible Jump-drive) • Third generation DVD drive • 11" or larger active matrix color screen • Hewlett Packard LaserJet V or compatible printer • Pointing device, built-in or external • Emulation or LAN adapter and software suitable for the dealer host computer • Microsoft Windows ( 2000 or XP) • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.5 and 6.0; browser must support Java Script and HTML, Version 2 • TCP/IP Dial-up Adapter (needed only for communicating between Service Information System and Service Advisor or DBS through Parts Integrator).
