Healesville. It showcases artwork from 

each of our participating artists in a unique 

setting. This year, the exhibition is hosted 

in a mud brick and timber factory space, 

with quirky styling by Healesville florist 

Bobbilee Shahine of Clarence. It also 

features the Artist’s Lounge where you can 

relax and plan your trip over a great coffee 

and locally made delicacies.

Open Studios 2012 

Has it really been 4 years? I was thinking the other 

day of the first time that I was part of an Open 

Studios discussion. Back in 2009, there were lots of 

“do you think anyone will come?” questions. “Will the 

artists think it’s worthwhile?” “Well, even if it’s only 

run for this year, it will still be OK, won’t it?” “Surely, 

it’ll be good for everyone to have something apart 

from the fires to focus on?” 

You can hear the conversation, can’t you? Like any 

new enterprise, there were so many “ifs” and “buts”. 

But the organizers and artists ploughed on. I was truly 

thrilled to be a tiny part of it all and even more thrilled 

when you, the visitors, turned up in droves. Initially, I 

think you came to support a part of Victoria that you 

knew was suffering. You found great art and artists, 

and now you come back for that. I don’t blame you – 

so do I. 

This fourth year sees a range of new artists, including 

some of international renown. Of course, we have 

some of our favourites back too – painters, jewellers, 

potters, and glassblowers, to name just a few. All with 

a singular creative vision – their vision. And because 

of Open Studios you get to see and learn a little of 

where their inspiration comes from. 

Thank you for being with us. If you’re here for the 

first time, welcome. It’s about time! And if you’re back 

again for another year, we can’t thank you enough.

Tim Bassett & Tali Dalton 

Healesville Glassblowing Studio 

Healesville Glassblowing Studio was founded by Tim 

Bassett and Tali Dalton, internationally recognised glass 

artists with a combined practice of over 25 years. Their 

individual work is in the Australian National Art Glass 

Collection, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. 

Tim specialises in site-specific contemporary chandeliers, 

while Tali focuses on sculpture. They work independently, 

but collaborate on a range of functional objects which 

they approach as a canvas on which to explore colour 

and texture in a painterly manner, creating abstract and 

expressionistic land and sky-scapes. Their mezzanine 

viewing area provides the opportunity to see the intriguing 

art of glassblowing.

Gayle’s love of creating bright and beautiful art wear has 

resulted in her textile practice becoming interwoven with 

her painting skills. Coloured fibres ooze from her hands, 

becoming paint laid out. 

She hand dyes wools and silks to add to the painted 

effect and incorporates handpainting, felting, crochet, 

stitching and recycling to produce unique art wear.

Christine Cafarella-Pearce 

Painter 

A multi-award winning contemporary realist artist, 

Christine mainly works in oils using distinctive technique, 

colour and design methods. Landscapes showcase the 

Yarra Valley, inland Australia, river, ocean and beach, while 

figurative works concentrate on body language. Christine 

paints in response to environment, people, seasons, events 

and situations. She involves viewers, creating emotional 

connections between themselves and her work. 

Christine often paints on site where 

the colours, sights and sounds become 

her inspiration. She is a well-respected 

demonstrator, tutor, judge and 

children’s book illustrator, and won 

the Australian Art Excellence Gold

For Ember, creating art is a communion with creation, it 

is a meditation where one ‘loses’ self and merges into all 

that is and all that is yet to be. The artwork can also be a 

contemplation, rather than a mental, conceptual idea of 

artmaking. To a large degree it is the process and the form 

which shapes the content of her work, employing colour, 

mark making, symbol and shape through oil paint, and 

texture via the encaustic process. 

Trained in Queensland, Ember has been exhibiting since 

2000, selling work and completing commissions in 

Australia, USA and Canada.

Gillian Farrow 

Textiles and collage 

After 25 years in the film industry working in art 

departments, set building, props and special effects, 

Gillian returned to university to study her first love, 

textiles. 

In 2008, she graduated from RMIT textile design 

which coincided with her move to the Valley. She 

now works intensively in her studio, in collage and 

screenprinting, creating wearable and usable art objects, 

and commissions. Her studio is a place of inspiration, 

creativity, rest and welcome for both herself and visitors.

For Christine, printmaking is about the fluidity of the line, 

the depth of the mark making, and the exploration of 

the surface, all of which combine to convey a whimsical 

feeling. 

When she begins to carve, the design begins to 

change, playing upon her mood that connects with her 

environment and childhood. This interplay of emotions 

and ever changing creativity comes to fruition when she 

sits in her studio overlooking the edge of the forest. 

Christine’s medium of choice is linocut, woodcut, wood 

engraving and drypoint.

Pastels 

Pastels are Pamela’s passion, although she works with oils 

and acrylics as well, sometimes combining all three. She 

is surrounded by a kaleidoscope of seasonal colours and 

enjoys revisiting places in different weather conditions to 

capture the changing beauty of nature. Pamela receives 

inspiration for many of her paintings simply looking out 

her studio window, while others are inspired by on site 

sketches.

Des Harry 

Painter 

Des is primarily a painter, but also creates sculptures and 

furniture. He has been painting on and off for 35 years, 

and his painted works range from experimental realism 

to contemporary abstraction. He originally worked only 

in oils, but has recently been using acrylics, painting very 

fast, creating large works with a limited colour range. 

Des prefers plein air painting, which although difficult, is 

much more rewarding. He is mostly self taught, but has 

been guided by mentors such as Charles McCubbin and 

Colin Johnson.

Mim’s main love is creating small sculptures using 

recycled bases, modelling medium, engraving tools, 

ceramics and acrylic paints. She is always a bit sad 

when parting with them as they evolve into such little 

characters. 

Mim also paints on canvas using acrylic paint, oils and 

inks. She paints on calico bags and loves the thought of 

people walking around carrying her artwork on their arm.

David describes his work as figurative illustration which

A lover of stories old and new, he has begun combining

Artist/Painter 

Marie draws inspiration from the natural world which 

surrounds her, both in the Yarra Valley and the universe. 

She has an intuitive connection and a total surrender to 

the vibrant colours that choose the canvas and loves to 

work in acrylics. 

Marie applies the paint thick and in many layers. The paint 

flows freely from the tube and wanders to the rhythm 

of spontaneous energies. The use of vivid fluorescent 

colours stimulate the senses and capture the essence of 

surrounding energies.

Lynne’s studio overlooks the beautiful Woori Yallock 

Valley where she finds constant inspiration. Her signature 

work in white porcelain continues to evolve with patterns 

inspired by the landscape and expressed as fine black 

lines inlaid with gold lustre. She also loves making softly 

thrown tableware glazed with timeless celadon and shino 

glazes. 

Lynne has recently been creating pieces for use in the 

landscape, using different hand-formed techniques. 

Whimsical plant totems, water catchers, pond floats, 

fountains, lanterns and majestic ‘Queen Head’ planters 

can all create a focal point in a garden or terrace.

Margaret’s creativity expresses itself in a number of ways;

raku fired ceramics 

Betty has worked with clay for over 35 years and worked 

exclusively in raku for the past 8 years. Raku fired 

ceramics originated in Japan in the 16th century to make 

tea bowls for tea ceremonies. The process differs from 

other ceramic firings in that pieces are pulled from the 

kiln at 1000 degrees Celsius, glowing hot, and then cooled 

in a bin of combustible materials, creating unique effects 

no other process can achieve. 

Betty will be holding firing demonstrations at her studio, 

which is nestled in beautiful bushland, constantly inspiring 

and honing her creativity in this exciting medium.

Mary Newham 

Painter and pastels 

Celebrating the beautiful Yarra Valley is fundamental to 

Mary’s art. Particularly inspiring is the variation of light, 

shade, colour, atmosphere and mood created by changes in 

weather, time and seasons. Painting on site is inspirational 

and meditative, often with horses, cattle or alpacas quietly 

observing her. When travelling Mary employs watercolours, 

gathering a diversity of ideas to re-work in oils in her studio. 

Mary’s lifelong interest in horses is also reflected in her 

work. While directly observing individual dressage horses 

and riders she quickly and expressively records their 

powerful and graceful movements using charcoal, pastel 

and ink washes.

The Art of bespoke fine jewellery is demonstrated at 

Silvermist Studio by Healseville’s award winning goldsmith, 

Tim Peel. By melting, hammering and bending silver, gold 

and platinum around precious and curious gemstones Tim 

creates finely crafted jewellery. Everything from glamorous 

wedding and engagement rings to stunningly simple 

earrings. In Tim’s more sculptural pieces, a painterly quality 

is introduced through textural finishes applied to the metal 

surfaces. Form is of equal importance to function in these 

necklets, pins and small sculptures. Whilst many influences 

are apparent in Tim’s work, strongest of all is a passion for 

gemstones and the history of Man.

Justin Purser 

metal Artist 

Justin’s designs are based on free flowing organic forms 

and patterns. He is inspired by the lines and forms of 

nature like the growth of a plant, grass in the wind, the 

flow of a river or a rolling landscape. He uses simple 

bending and shaping techniques, a gas fired forge and an 

old power hammer to create the components for gates, 

balustrades and architectural details. 

Justin uses his Architectural Ceramics and Design 

background to design artistic objects for specific spaces. 

The majority of my work comes from private commissions 

although he has completed a number of public and 

commercial projects.

Maureen Purser 

Potter, art yarn spinner 

Maureen’s life as a potter began 20 years ago at Potters 

Cottage, Warrandyte. 

The pieces she creates are functional stoneware pieces, 

randomly glazed in blacks, blues and reds, representing 

the colours of the landscape. 

Her studio ‘Cow Shed Pottery’ is in the milking shed of 

an old dairy farm in Yarra Glen where she also creates 

colourful scarves and products from alpaca and 

sheeps wool.

Jenny is interested in the alchemy of painting. She dissolves 

pigments in various solvents and then pours them onto 

a prepared surface. The pigments fall out of solution at 

different rates creating effects that could not possibly be 

achieved with a brush and conventional methods 

of application.

Amanda loves painting clouds and landscapes that evoke 

a sense of drama and theatre. Her works often portray a 

feeling of tranquillity, fairy tale and forever more, as well 

as darkness and turbulence. In February 2012 Amanda

Ceramic artist 

After 30 years working as a professional ceramic artist, 

Ted is expanding his horizons and moving into sculpture. 

He now prefers much simpler forms, with the sense of an 

easy curve, ‘like a brush stroke’ and works from a studio 

situated on top of a hill with magnificent views over the 

Yarra Valley. 

Ted’s long career includes many exhibitions in Japan, 

Europe and USA and he has works in over 30 permanent 

collections worldwide. Ted’s work can be seen in public 

places including Crown Towers and Chadstone Shopping 

Centre.

Raelene Sharp

Raelene is fascinated with light and how it falls across an 

object or view. She uses it as a tool for effect, and also as a 

significant addition to the work. 

Raelene uses this method to its best advantage, and 

is most satisfied artistically, when painting portraiture 

or figurative works. While she specialises in portraiture 

and feels lucky to have painted some well-known and 

respected people, she does not limit herself to this subject. 

Raelene has been a winner and finalist in many national 

portrait and art exhibitions. She is a finalist and winner of 

the Packing Room Prize in this year’s Archibald Prize.

Melissa uses an old masters technique called the 

‘Mischtechnik’, layering hand mixed oil paints, egg 

tempera and mediums onto the canvas. She enjoys 

the process of discovering the play of light and beauty 

within this technique. 

Melissa intends to open the scope of creative visioning 

for the conscious co-creation of an awakened future 

in the present moment. She sources from ancient 

culture knowledge and symbols, as well as cutting edge

Wendy-Jane Sheppard 

painter 

Wendy-Jane creates paintings and drawings that reflect 

her interest in the relationships between humans and the 

other animals with whom we share this planet. The focus 

of her art is the personal characteristics of individuals, who 

inspire her to create traditional portraits in oils, watercolour 

or graphite. 

Wendy-Jane is a registered teacher of the Michael Wilcox 

School of Colour UK, and tutors individuals and groups on 

colour mixing, drawing and painting. She also mentors VCE 

and tertiary art students and professional art practitioners.

sculptor 

Jeremy uses salvaged timbers, storm damaged and 

dead trees, mostly Cypress Macrocarpa, a creamy wood; 

the grain is caramel, toffee and honey. The timbers are 

harvested sustainably and his studio runs on solar power, 

love, chocolate and kisses. 

‘I harness the Creative Juice of the Cosmos. Dancing 

wildly with Yin Yang. I enjoy the feminine form, smooth, 

soft and flowing. My energy is playful and erotic. 

My creativity is embraced, mostly chainsaw carving – 

abstract, archetypal. I want my creations to be touched, 

sat on and caressed. They are beings emerging 

from the wood.

Katrina’s sculptural forms, which are hand built, reflect 

her own personality, with many taking on a whimsical 

nature or an underlying message. She gets inspiration 

from the environment and its abundant offerings of 

texture, colour and shape. She uses a variety of clays from 

warm speckled earthy colours to stark white porcelain, 

sometimes combining clays to create contrast 

and interest. 

Katrina loves exploiting the texture of clay, either by 

highlighting patterns using oxide and spot glazing or by 

placing texture over texture and glaze on glaze, allowing 

the piece to develop its own unique pattern.

Painter and sculptor 

Antonio is inspired and influenced by the inherent beauty 

of the natural environment, its colours, shapes, texture and 

changing moods. His process follows instinct rather than 

consciously trying to pre-determine an outcome. Vibrancy, 

spontaneity and an atmosphere of mystery is essential. 

In painting Antonio expresses the landscape in an intuitive 

rather than literal manner, using acrylic, watercolour and 

gouache, interpreting the rhythm and patterns of nature. 

His drawings are an exploration of line and texture in pen 

and ink, graphite and pastels while his sculptures cover 

a variety of subjects from figurative to abstract, working 

mainly in wood.

Alistair believes that as he matures as an artist, his 

priorities change. There is no longer a need to prove 

himself or gain many new skills. It is more of a question of 

polishing existing skills, working within the bounds of his 

abilities, finding new challenges, keeping an open mind, 

teaching other artists and realising his limitations. 

While Alistair is known as a maker of fine porcelain, 

visitors will discover a diversity that few other potters 

display. He feels that as part of his Japanese training and 

a different mindset, he has acquired diversity, flexibility 

and a better understanding of a different journey.

David’s commitment to crystalline glazed porcelain began 

while completing a BA (Fine Art) at Phillip Institute (Melb) 

in 1980. Each piece is individually handcrafted on a potter’s 

wheel and then fired to a very high temperature in a kiln. 

Crystal formation occurs during the cooling stage. The 

crystal shapes and patterns vary from one firing to another 

making each piece a unique collectors item. David’s work 

has been exhibited in the National Gallery of Victoria and 

Parliament House, Canberra and is represented in many 

recognised public and private collections.
