15 May 2009 – Newsletter No. 13
The organisers have been amazed at the standard
of many of the works returned so far from not only
well known artists but also a cross section of the
community including talented students from our
school. As mentioned previously, celebrity artists
who have contributed include Peter Garrett, TV
presenter Rebecca Harris, James Morrison, Rod
Clement, Sun Park (from Hi 5), Layne Beachley and
Kirk Pengilly (ex INXS), Simon Westaway (actor in
Underbelly), skier Zali Steggall and athlete Melinda
Gainsford‐Taylor. Politicians Brad Hazzard, Mike
Baird and Tony Abbott have also taken canvases to
create their own work of art centred around the
theme of Manly.
Almost 200 canvases were issued and the bulk of
them have been returned. These have all been
photographed, curated and recognised on the Wall
of Fame. Biographies of all of the artists will be
included so purchasers can get to know about who
created their piece, from the humble to the
famous. For those who haven’t yet returned your
canvases please do so urgently so that your work
can be included in the Wall of Fame and the
biographical backgrounds can be printed.
Next week a link to a dedicated website will be
published allowing a special viewing of all the
artworks submitted. Purchasers will be able to
have previews of the pieces that have been
photographed and catalogued. These will then be
offered for sale at a premium price on Monday
25 th and Tuesday 26 th . All remaining unsold works
will be offered for $100 each on the display days
from Wednesday to Friday before the cocktail
party on Friday 29 th May. The artist’s name will
Parents Lea Gregory and Jill Deere who have been
the key drivers in getting this fantastic event
underway. They have been very generous in giving
their time and expertise to help shape what will be
a great event in the school calendar.
Many of the businesses and members of the arts
community in Manly have been generous in their
prizes for which the P&C is very grateful. Theatre
tickets, restaurant vouchers and music lessons are
just some of the goods and services that have been
offered. These will be attached to the back of
canvases as hidden prizes only revealed when they
are purchased.
Five items have been selected for auction including
those of Peter Garrett, James Morrison, an original
photograph by photographer Carol Gibbons and an
exceptional work by our very own art teacher
AmandaTye. Peter Garrett’s work will include his
trademark handprint harking back to Midnight Oil
days. We thank Noel Nicholson of Ray White
Prestige Palm Beach who has offered to be the
auctioneer on board to sell these special items.
Tickets for the cocktail party are $15 and are now
on sale through the office (see flyer later). These
need to be purchased early to help with ordering.
The evening will be catered with a bar available.
This will be an evening for adults only as alcohol
will be served.
Your support is highly valued in helping make this
unique event a great success.
Geography Competition – we have just heard that
the school has been ranked sixth in Australia in the
2009 National Geographic Channel Australia
Geography Competition. This result is determined
by comparing the results of your best five students
under 16 years old and the best five students 16 or
over, with those of other schools.
The organisers only give school prizes to the top
school in each state but list the top 10 in Australia
on their website once the prize confirmation
process is completed. This is an outstanding
achievement and a wonderful recognition of our
students and staff.
Sydney University Scholarships – this week I was
privileged to attend the presentation ceremony for
five of our Class of 2008 students. Scholarships
with merit were awarded to Mitchell Bell (Bachelor
of Engineering specialising in aeronautical
engineering), Naomi Biddle (Bachelor of Education
– Primary) and Richard Wang (Bachelor of
Engineering and Bachelor of Medical Science).
Entry scholarships were awarded to Tomas
Richardson Sanchez (Bachelor of Science) and
Michael Webster (Bachelor of Science). These are
highly sought after scholarships awarded to a
relatively small group of students who display
academic skills and maturity. Over 2100 applied,
so final selection is a great honour.
The scholarships are generous in their provision
for students in their tertiary years and application
by current Year 12 students is recommended. Ms
Susie Copp (Careers Adviser) can provide
information to support students in their
applications.
SRC Mural – thank you to the hardworking Year
12 SRC and the designer Narelle Ng (Year 10) for
the work they did in painting the new mural in the
assembly area after the design competition earlier
this year. Special thanks must go to Naomi Leviton
who has been a driving force in this project.
Students are very appreciative of the new look
quadrangle.
Year 11 Drama – it is always encouraging to hear
from visitors how much they appreciate our
students. Recently a local playwright Sue Murray
visited for a workshop session with Year 11 Drama.
Her words say it all:
“Yesterday afternoon’s session with Neda Joyce
and the Year 11 Drama students was better than I
could have hoped for. They worked with
professionalism, displaying outstanding skills,
enthusiasm and sensitivity in taking the scripts
from page to stage. Their feedback was perceptive
and very useful. It was a memorable experience ‐
please pass on my heartfelt thanks to Neda and all
the students. Thank you for the opportunity to
work with them.”
College Netball – today the College Netball team
play Brisbane Waters Secondary College at Woy
Woy. Claire McAuley and Stephanie McDonald are
the Manly players in the team led by our very own
netball star coach Ms Maggs. We wish them all the
best in this tough knockout competition.
Uniform – students have been given their seasonal
reminder/warning about the standard of uniform
expected during the winter months. Some
students have found that when reminders run out
there are other consequences for not wearing
uniform. Navy tops must be worn and girls need to
know that leg ins are not part of the uniform.
Tights may be worn with skirts or navy school
slacks for the cold weather. Jeans are not
acceptable at any time and seniors will be directed
home to change after parental contact has been
made if they come dressed this way. School shoes
MUST be plain black leather or vinyl for
compliance and OHS reasons. “U” day is fast
approaching when a blitz will be held without
notice!
Rock4Sight Fundraising Concert 2009 ‐ this
concert will take place at Stella Maris School on
the 29 May 2009 with the support of the Fred
Hollows Foundation. 50% of the total funds raised
go directly to the Fred Hollows Foundation. The
remaining 50% go towards supporting a team of
mothers and teenage daughters in climbing Mt
Rinjani, Indonesia in July of this year. Contact the
school for more details.
Sexting – please take the time to look through the
following message from The NSW Deputy Director
General for Education re ‘sexting’ as reported
recently in the media.
You will be aware of recent media on the use of
mobile phones to send provocative images. This is
an issue of concern particularly for parents of
adolescents.
The attached fact sheet, SAFE SEXTING: No such
thing, aims to raise awareness of this growing
trend for young people to send provocative images
of themselves to their friends via mobile phone ‐ a
practice termed ‘sexting’.
Links to the fact sheet on the NSW Department of
Education and Training’s internet and intranet
websites are provided as follows.
Intranet website address:
https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/newsbuzz/yr2009
/may/
Internet website address:
http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/new
s/technology/cybersafety/yr2009/sextingfacts.pdf
The Department’s May issue of Click magazine also
contains a pod cast discussing ‘sexting’ and
suggesting strategies for parents. It can be
accessed at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/click
The key message from schools to parents and
young people about this activity is ‐ don’t post
images of yourself and don’t distribute any sent
to you.
I know that we all share the view that the welfare
of our students is a paramount concern.
NAPLAN – the National Assessment Program for
Literacy and Numeracy was conducted smoothly
and efficiently over three days this week. Students
reported no issues in dealing with the test material
which will give a snapshot of national literacy for
various age groups across the country.
Congratulations to:
Ben Aves (Year 11) who over the April holidays
finished in the first four for the selection trials
for the Australian Youth Team to compete in
the World Youth Climbing Championships.
Ben’s selection means he travels to France in
August to compete against other international
teams. We wish him well in his training and in
the championships.
Tallulah Bur (Year 9) who has been successful
in gaining a scholarship to attend the English
National Ballet School in August. Tallulah’s
exceptional talents have been recognised in
the school dance program and have clearly
shown she has a wonderful future in dance.
Jashank Jeremy (Year 8) for his highly
animated and positive announcements at the
weekly SRC assembly last Wednesday.
It’s All About Work Initiative:
Tues June 23rd 2009 from 1.45pm – 3.45pm at
the school
The P&C Executive are enthusiastically supporting
an innovative project being run in June 2009.
Please take the time to read the project brief for
Josie O’Donnell’s It’s All About Work initiative
included in last week’s The Weekly Pines. This is a
subject choice/careers advice event that Josie is
organizing for Years 9 and 10 students to interact
with a range of parents and community members
working in a wide range of fields.
It will be set up as a hot‐desk scenario where Year
9 and 10 students can sit down and ask about real
world career pathways, sort of like speed‐
networking. It will help with subject choices and
career planning at the school.
We need parents and other people to volunteer a
few hours of their time on Tuesday June 23rd 2009
from 1.45pm – 3.45pm at the school.
Further details are available at
http://www.manlyselective.nsw.edu.au/document
s/CareerInterests.pdf or in The Weekly Pines.
Please think about participating yourself, ask your
family, neighbours and others in your workplace
and social/professional networks whether they
could assist. If you want to participate, please fill in
the form and get it in so we can make it a success.
On a value‐add note, there will be a wide range of
interesting people volunteering their time, and it is
a chance to talk one‐on‐one with some of our
fantastic students, so no doubt it will be an
valuable afternoon for all involved.
P&C Meeting 7.30pm Wed 20 th May in the
Common Room at the school
Jose Diacono who looks after P&C website, will be
asking for feedback about P&C website format and
content. Please come along and have your say. If
you get a chance before the meeting, go in and
refresh your memory about the site
http://www.manlyselective.nsw.edu.au/
David Tomlin will give an overview and update in
relation to the school Charter, the first in a series
of Charter updates he will do over the next few
months. This month he will outline the Charter
framework, its genesis and how it fits with the
Department of Education’s Quality Teaching
framework, as well as briefing us on several
aspects of content and how we are progressing.
We will also get an update from David Tomlin on
our successful Government funding grant
applications, the projects which are planned and
underway, and how this fits in with the Master
Plan.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
FROM THE HEAD TEACHER WELFARE
Last Friday all Year 11 attended a study skills
seminar presented by Elevate Education. Here are
some tips that were mentioned that can apply to
all students in Years 7‐12 on note‐making from
classwork in any subjects This is a great way of
helping develop your long term memory.
Use subheadings, dot points, trigger words and
colour.
 Develop your personal shorthand.
Use graphic organisers where applicable: eg
mind maps
Keep your notes for each subject together in
an organized fashion, use loose leaf paper so
that you can add to it easily.
After writing a set of notes:
o read the notes immediately (the most
important stage of memory)
o read the notes 24 hours later
(compacting your memory)
o read the notes monthly (set aside time
in your study timetable to do this)
More tips next week
GEOGRAPHY NEWS
Strong Geography Performance
‐ Mrs J McNee
The Years 8 to 11 Geography students have
continued their impressive performances in the
Australian Geography Competition this year by
coming sixth in the country. This is a fabulous
result and continues the strong performance of
Geography students in external examinations and
competitions in recent years.
It follows the School Certificate last year where
nearly 70% of candidates achieved at Band 6 level
(the highest band) and, with the exception of one
student, the rest received a Band 5 result. These
were the best results across the school.
In the HSC last year 92% of the Geography
candidates were in the top two bands.
With subject choices to be made soon for next
year’s Year 9 and 11, it may be worthwhile for
students to consider elective Geography at the end
of Year 8 and Year 10 for their future study. With
geography impacting on everyone through factors
such as global warming, resource depletion and
population growth, studying Geography allows
students to be abreast of the current issues, with
up to date information and analysis that will allow
them to make informed decisions for a better
future.
SWEENEY TODD
SOME HISTORICAL NOTES
Researching the era of the musical is always one of
the highlights for me. I’d like to share with you
these articles that I found on the subject of
gentlemen’s hair styles in Victorian England.
In 1840 men wore their hair moderately long,
usually parted on the side, and curled in front of
the ears. From 1852 onward they greased it with
Rowland’s macassar oil – hence the need for
antimacassars on the backs of chairs. A moustache
and whiskers, and even a thin fringe beard under
the chin were not uncommon, but practically no
beards were to be seen on the chin. On the
Continent hair on the face was not only despised
but politically suspect in the belief that only
Republicans, Socialists and Radicals trying to
disguise themselves would be unshaven. In 1846
Prussian postmen were forbidden to wear even a
moustache.
In the early years of his reign the Emperor Franz
Joseph of Austria forbade all state functionaries to
wear beards, and in 1859, prior to Garibaldi’s
invasion of his kingdom, Francis II of Naples
abolished beards by royal decree because ‘they
savour too much of the revolutionary principle of
Garibaldi’. In Naples, a Frenchman was seized by
the police and forcibly shaved in the nearest
barber’s shop. The Duke of Moderna, too, ordered
all male travellers whose passports were not in
order to be shaved.
Another gem I found was this one:
William Henry Henslowe was the author of a
pamphlet entitled “Beard‐Shaving, and the
Common Use of the Razor, an unnatural, irrational,
unmanly, ungodly, and fatal fashion among
Christians” (1847). After citing Biblical texts against
the shaving‐off of beards, Henslowe quotes with
satisfaction the Sunday Times of 21 February 1847:
‘It is recently stated by a military (staff) surgeon,
that important physical advantages are attached
to mustachios. He says that they shelter the lips
and strengthen the teeth, by resisting the
influences of cold and heat … by preserving an
equal temperature about the skin; it protects the
lips and the enamel of the teeth. Thus the teeth are
rendered more serviceable for the biting of
cartridges; and the use of the mustachio is also a
great saving in time at the soldier’s toilet’.
[taken from Victorian and Edwardian Fashion, a
Photographic Survey by Alison Gernsheim]
Next week I’ll share some snippets on the use of
gloves in Victorian England.
SAFE SEXTING: No such thing
Parents are urged to warn children about the dangers of ‘sexting’– the growing trend for
young people to send provocative images of themselves to their friends via mobile phones.
Once photos are sent, it is an almost
instant push of the button to forward
them or load them onto the internet.
These pictures then become part of
a young person’s ‘digital footprint’,
lasting forever and potentially
damaging future career prospects or
relationships.
Images sent by mobile phone can
easily fall into the wrong hands,
and once they are in cyberspace it is
impossible to remove them or control
who sees them.
More and more young people seem
to be distributing highly suggestive
or even sexually explicit photos of
themselves to their friends, often
without a real understanding of the
consequences.
The easy availability of new
technologies and social networking
sites can turn what can seem an
innocent joke or flirtatious fun into a
potentially devastating experience –
with young girls most at risk.
Sexting can lead to public
humiliation, cyberbullying, or even
sexual assault.
The message to young people is –
don’t post images of yourself and
don’t distribute any sent to you.
It is illegal to take sexual photos of
children and young people and it is
also an offence to pass them on.
Parents are encouraged to get
advice on sexting through the 24-hr
parenting advice line, Parent Line
1300 1300 52. The line is staffed
by highly trained and experienced
counsellors.
Parents can learn about how
technology is used in their child’s life
by visiting the Education Department’s
website www.schools.nsw.edu.au/
news/technology/index.php.
For more advice on parenting and
sexting, visit the Department of
Community Services website www.
community.nsw.gov.au.
Tips for parents
■ Warn your children about the
consequences of sexting.
■ Remind children to think before
they act.
■ Tell children that sending or
possessing child pornography is
illegal.
■ Warn them about sexual predators.
■ Parents should learn how to use
and monitor their children’s mobile
phones.
■ Parents should check photo
galleries on their children’s
Facebook and MySpace accounts.
■ Give your children clear rules on
what they can and can’t do with
their mobile phone.
