<strong>PV</strong> <strong>Inverters</strong><br />

<strong>Use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>systems</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>backup</strong> <strong>systems</strong> <strong>in</strong> North <strong>and</strong> South America<br />

Table <strong>of</strong> Contents<br />

Both <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>systems</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the event <strong>of</strong> <strong>grid</strong> failures <strong>in</strong> <strong>backup</strong> <strong>systems</strong>, <strong>grid</strong> fluctuations <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone<br />

<strong>grid</strong> are possible. This may cause severe deviations <strong>in</strong> nom<strong>in</strong>al voltage <strong>and</strong> nom<strong>in</strong>al frequency. Despite such<br />

fluctuations, all the components <strong>of</strong> the system must function without problems.<br />

This technical <strong>in</strong>formation will <strong>in</strong>form you about the follow<strong>in</strong>g topics:<br />

• Which <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> you can use <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>systems</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>backup</strong> <strong>systems</strong>.<br />

• Which parameters you need to set <strong>in</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter.<br />

• What type <strong>of</strong> communication you need to <strong>in</strong>stall <strong>in</strong> <strong>backup</strong> <strong>systems</strong>.<br />

• Which values the parameters <strong>of</strong> <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> will display <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> operation.<br />

• How the output power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter can be limited by the Frequency-Shift Power Control function<br />

(FSPC) <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter.<br />

System failures due to excessive power output <strong>of</strong> AC sources <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong><br />

If the power <strong>of</strong> the AC sources (e.g., <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong>) <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>systems</strong> or <strong>backup</strong> <strong>systems</strong> is too high, it may<br />

cause system failures.<br />

• Design the total nom<strong>in</strong>al AC power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> to be no more than twice as high as the<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>al AC power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong>.<br />

• If w<strong>in</strong>d energy <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> feed <strong>in</strong>to the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong>, design the total nom<strong>in</strong>al power <strong>of</strong> the AC<br />

sources <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong> to be no larger than the nom<strong>in</strong>al AC power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong>.<br />

• Per 1 000 W nom<strong>in</strong>al AC power <strong>of</strong> the AC sources <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong>, allow at least 100 Ah<br />

battery capacity.<br />

2.2 Parameter Sett<strong>in</strong>g for Off-<strong>grid</strong> Operation<br />

The parameters "Default" <strong>and</strong> "BackupMode" are used to set the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> to <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> operation. With the<br />

"Default" parameter, you can set the country data set. With the "BackupMode" parameter you can set whether<br />

the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is to form a <strong>backup</strong> system with the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter via RS485.<br />

<strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> <strong>in</strong> an <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> system not connected to the power distribution <strong>grid</strong> must be configured accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

2.3 Parameter Sett<strong>in</strong>gs for Back-up Operation<br />

In a <strong>backup</strong> system, the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is connected to the power distribution <strong>grid</strong> <strong>and</strong> communicates with the<br />

<strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> via RS485. Therefore, you must equip the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter <strong>and</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> with an<br />

RS485 Piggy-Back. In a cluster, only the master <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter must be equipped with an RS485<br />

Piggy-Back.<br />

The <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> must be configured accord<strong>in</strong>g to the follow<strong>in</strong>g table:<br />

* Can be adjusted as <strong>of</strong> firmware version 1.93<br />

** Even when the "BackupMode" parameter <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is set to "OnAll", the system fulfills the requirements accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

UL1741.<br />

*** Even when the "BackupMode" parameter <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is set to "OnAll", the system fulfills the requirements accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

UL1741. The parameter "BackupMode" can be adjusted as <strong>of</strong> firmware version 1.93.<br />

<strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> without the "BackupMode" parameter<br />

For <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> without the "BackupMode" parameter, the "Default" parameter must be set to "UL1741".<br />

After these sett<strong>in</strong>gs have been made, the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is configured for operation on the power distribution<br />

<strong>grid</strong>. In the event <strong>of</strong> a power distribution <strong>grid</strong> failure, the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is no longer able to regulate the<br />

<strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> by means <strong>of</strong> Frequency-Shift Power Control (FSPC). If there is an excessive supply <strong>of</strong> energy,<br />

the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> will disconnect.<br />

Backup <strong>systems</strong> with SI 4548-US-10, SI 5048U <strong>and</strong> SI 6048-US-10<br />

In the event <strong>of</strong> a power distribution <strong>grid</strong> failure, the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter sets the "Default" parameter <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>verter to "OFF_Grid". Thus, if a <strong>grid</strong> failure occurs, the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is able to regulate the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> via<br />

Frequency Shift Power Control (FSPC). When the <strong>grid</strong> returns, the <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter sets the "Default" parameter<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter back to "UL1741".<br />

Backup <strong>systems</strong> with SI 4248U<br />

For operation with <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong>, you must set the "Sunny Boy" parameter <strong>of</strong> the SI 4248U to Yes <strong>and</strong> the<br />

"GridConnected" parameter to GridFeed<strong>PV</strong>.<br />

In the event <strong>of</strong> a power distribution <strong>grid</strong> failure, the SI 4248U regulates the power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> directly<br />

via RS485.<br />

SMA America, LLC Frequency-Shift Power Control (FSPC)<br />

4 Frequency-Shift Power Control (FSPC)<br />

If <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> are connected on the AC side <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> operation or back-up operation, the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> must<br />

be able to limit their output power. This situation can occur when, for example, the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong>'s batteries are<br />

fully charged <strong>and</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> power available from the <strong>PV</strong> array exceeds the power required by the connected<br />

loads.<br />

To prevent the excess energy from overcharg<strong>in</strong>g the battery, the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> recognizes this situation <strong>and</strong><br />

changes the frequency at the AC output. This frequency change is analyzed by the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter. As soon as the<br />

power frequency <strong>in</strong>creases beyond the value specified by "Fac Start delta", the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter limits its output<br />

power accord<strong>in</strong>gly.<br />

Figure 1: Operat<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> the FSPC<br />

The terms used here have the follow<strong>in</strong>g mean<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />

• fAC refers to the base frequency <strong>of</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong> (here 60 Hz).<br />

• fAC Delta– <strong>and</strong> fAC Delta+ refer to the maximum range relative to fAC <strong>in</strong> which the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter is active.<br />

• fAC Start Delta is the frequency <strong>in</strong>crease relative to fAC , at which po<strong>in</strong>t the frequency-based power control<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

• fAC Limit Delta is the frequency <strong>in</strong>crease relative to fAC , at which po<strong>in</strong>t the frequency-based power control<br />

ends. The output power <strong>of</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong>in</strong>verter at this po<strong>in</strong>t is 0 W.<br />

If the value is below the fAC Delta– limit or above the fAC Delta+ limit, the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> disconnect from the<br />

power distribution <strong>grid</strong>.<br />

When an external energy source, (e.g., a diesel generator) is operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong>, this external<br />

energy source determ<strong>in</strong>es the frequency, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> set to <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>grid</strong> operation react to certa<strong>in</strong> frequency<br />

changes brought about by the external energy source.<br />

When diesel generators are used as external energy source, the output voltage frequency under load is<br />

60 Hz. For this reason, <strong>in</strong> most cases the <strong>PV</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> will deliver their entire power to the st<strong>and</strong>-alone <strong>grid</strong>, even<br />

when the diesel generator is <strong>in</strong> operation.<br />

If the current battery voltage (VBat ) is greater than the nom<strong>in</strong>al battery voltage (VBat nom ) <strong>and</strong> is also to be<br />

synchronized with an external energy source, the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> temporarily <strong>in</strong>creases the frequency <strong>and</strong> the <strong>PV</strong><br />

<strong><strong>in</strong>verters</strong> disconnect via frequency shutdown (overfrequency). Afterwards, the Sunny Isl<strong>and</strong> synchronizes with<br />

the external energy source.<br />
