IF student
wins Miss
Teen Idaho
Next step for local
contestant is national
competition in April
By David Gasch • Photo courtesy Phillip Pfeiffer
very little girl always fantasizes about being a princess;
senior Shareece Pfeiffer has turned that fantasy
into a reality for herself. Pfeiffer was crowned Miss Teen
Idaho - a precursor to the Miss Teen USA pageant.
Ever since the age of three, she has been in love
with the stage and everything involved with it. She has
performed in a wide variety of competitions including everything
from local high school plays to national competitions.
From there she moved on to landing a supporting role
on the Warner Brothers film, “Unaccompanied Minors.”
Along with representing Idaho to the best of
her ability and the obvious desire to win, she
also hopes that this competition will open
doors for her so that she can continue acting
and singing.
“I believe that having a strong foundation
of faith, family and integrity can
help guide youth through the struggles
they are currently facing in today’s
world,” Pfeiffer said. “I stand firm in
my faith in God.
“I recently received the highest Young
Women medallion award from my
church for exceptional values, integrity
and community service,” she continued.
“My motto has been you must be able to
‘believe it, conceive it and receive it.’”
Pfeiffer expressed her gratitude for
this new opportunity. “I’m thankful
I can serve and represent the state of
Idaho this coming year,” she said. “I
promise to do all I can to uphold the
honor and tradition of the great State
of Idaho and bring home the national
title of Miss Teen USA.”
Some fires
others blaze
on in Calif.
Russ Britt
MCT Campus
LOS ANGE-
LES — While many
Southern California
wildfires have died
down, several others
raged Wednesday as
firefighters hoped
the winds would
settle enough to help
them get a handle
on the conflagration
still going strong in
Orange and San Diego
counties.
With damages reportedly
exceeding $1
billion in the San Diego
area alone, fire crews
were working on their
fourth day of battling
flames in rough terrain
and heavy brush,
with wildfires working
their way to the
Pacific Ocean in some
cases.
President Bush,
who was due to make
his way to Southern
California Thursday,
issued a major disaster
declaration for the
area. It was the president’s
second declaration
since the fires
struck; the first was
his calling the area in
a state of emergency.
“This declaration
means millions of dollars
in much needed
assistance to help
our state rebuild and
recover. The federal
government did the
right thing,” Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger
said in a statement.
The National
Weather Service reported
Sunday that
winds were expected
to die down, but temperatures
would remain
in the 80s and
90s in many of the afflicted
areas.

Driving is a form of
transportation that has
become a necessity for the
majority of people in the
country today, and most
people find themselves
completely lost without
it.
Although it is extremely
beneficial and time
saving, it remains one of
the easiest ways to obtain
serious injury or death.
Many states across the
country have attempted
to enforce a law against
talking on the phone or
doing other distracting
activities while driving.
In seven years, the
number of convictions
10
QUESTIONS
Reported by Kara French
as a result of distractions
has increased by over
half. According to local
authorities, mixing activities
such as eating, applying
make-up or using cell
phones with driving has
the potential to be a disastrous
decision.
Idaho has not yet
showed interest in making
such law. Idaho Falls,
however, has a different
idea.
As of right now there
is a proposal that has
been introduced that, if
put into effect, would allow
citizens to be cited
if they are doing things
that could distract them
enough to potentially put
others in harm’s way.
This city ordinance
could possibly lower the
amount of accidents that
occur. That would be
the intended effect. The
tough part of this proposal
is getting approval
from the public.
“It’s stupid,” junior
Chris Bateman said. “If
you can do it (texting)
without crashing you
should be able to.”
Many people have become
as attached to their
phones as they have to
driving. Many people
rely on being able to getting
ready in their car to
get to work or school on
time.
There is also a concern
that high school students
or other young people
could be targeted.
Traditions flourish throughout
Idaho Falls High School. They
can enrich the experience of high
school and provide ways to have fun
as we work our way towards graduation.
One of our most prominent traditions
is not only well known for Idaho
Falls, but also to many others around
the country. This tradition, of course,
is the long held rivalry between IFHS
and Skyline High School.
The Emotion Bowl is an event that
attracts thousands of Idahoans every
year in early October. It is an event
that many past Tigers leave college to
experience. Sports Illustrated, in past
years, rated this high school rivalry
among the top in the country.
This rivalry carries the potential to
be just that — one of the greatest. But
now the tradition is becoming dangerous.
The fun that once flourished is
slowly being pushed away, and soon it
will completely disappear.
Recently, the title “Emotion Bowl”
has started carrying new meanings. It
has become a time when students from
each school prove themselves by fighting
or destroying cars rather than by
winning the game. This year, a large
number of cars were defaced as a result
of Emotion Week. A few years ago
there was an incident where cats were
killed and hung from the goalposts.
These are the most immature and
stupid ways to “celebrate” the coming
of the game. By doing these things
people do nothing but mar the name
There are many traditions that precede the Emotion Bowl — the week we play
Skyline — known as Emotion Week. This week is a fun and memorable time for
the students and also a time to get pumped up for the big game! There are many
activities that the orange student body can participate throughout the week, such
as: car bashing, the gummy bear eating competition and, of course, the famous
Bear Burning. Skyline High School also has its traditions this week such as the
“Tiger Stomp” to get them pumped. Both schools are very spirited during this
week, and even throughout the whole school year. No matter what happens,
everyone knows the rivalry between the Orange and Blue will never die.
disgraced. Anybody can
key a car or smash a window,
but it takes skill and
pride to be victorious the
way that victory should
be won.
Destroying cars is
simply an easy way out.
It is a way to feel empowered
without hard work.
What is the point? You
keyed a car. Good job.
What good does it do?
What pride comes from
that? None. Nothing
comes from that except
for more trouble.
People love the Emotion
Bowl, but if these
things are not discontinued
then the entire
tradition will become
something of the past.
The Emotion Bowl will
be cancelled. Then all
of these people who are
“cool” enough to destroy
a car complain and “don’t
know why the district
would be so mean as to
do such a thing.”
The games, fun and
activities will simply
become another day in
class. But that’s better
than having an Emotion
Week, right? No.
It’s not just Skyline students
that do these things.
Students at IFHS also take
part in these crimes. It is
a disgusting display of
school pride, and it does
nothing but embarrass
the school and the rest of
us who genuinely enjoy
the Emotion Bowl.
This school has a great
reputation to uphold,
and it is these people that
put that in jeopardy. It is
this group of people that
do not deserve to call
themselves Tigers.
It is immature. Grow
up and show some integrity.
Show that our school
can be the best without
these ignorant displays
of hostility. Do what is
right. Trust me. There
My dad has been
This, in some cases,
I have learned in the
Licorice is an acquired taste
‘The Rocket Summer’ starts now
This band by Bryce
Avary adds a
different sound to
the music industry
Dalin Klompien
News Editor
The Rocket Summer is a
one-man band of Bryce Avary
(signed by the record label
Island Records) who released
his new album, “Do
You Feel,” this summer on
July 17.
The album has 13 tracks
on it and after listening to
this album for the first time,
I didn’t really get into any
of the songs when I heard
them, but when I played the
CD again I found Avary’s
unique sound.
He plays all of the instruments
in his songs except
for a couple. What makes
his sound unique is that he
uses a wide variety of instruments
such as guitar,
drums, bass, piano and the
organ.
His very high voice sets
him apart from other art-
The Grand Teton Mall may
have a wide variety of stores,
but the city of Idaho Falls has
yet to see what The Prestige has
to offer.
Last year the ideas started
floating onto the blueprints for
the making of The Prestige.
Some people may have heard
of Sparks — a store in the mall
that is stereotyped as a store
where all the “gangsters” go to
get their fly clothing.
That “gangster” store has
been revamped and remodeled
to form The Prestige. It’s loaded
with new brands of clothing
as well as a few old ones. Don’t
listen to that stereotype before
you’ve experienced the new
vibe.
The hiring age is 18 years
my favorite and find myself
singing along to are, “Do
You Feel,” “A Song Is Not A
Business Plan” and “Taken
New store adds variety
to clothing shops in mall
old and it helps to have experience
in retail. According to
employees, their busiest day of
the week is Saturday, as is to be
expected.
The Prestige is owned by
a very outgoing, upbeat guy
named George. At the age of 23,
few people can picture themselves
owning their own store.
George use to work at Footlocker
and he strived on saving
money. He has a very impulsive
personality, and after two
years of hard work, he saved
up enough money to open
Sparks and later, The Prestige.
Before too long, George plans
on opening another Prestige in
Salt Lake City, Utah.
The next time you’re in The
Grand Teton Mall, don’t forget
to check out The Prestige,
Aback.”
The album is well known
for the song, “Do You Feel,”
which depicts how it is
sometimes hard to help
other people, let alone the
world, when you have so
many things of your own to
take care of and how sometimes
you have to help yourself
first.
The chorus of this song
says, “Do you feel the
weight of the world singing
sorrow?/Or to you is it just
not real ‘cause you got your
own things?/Yeah, we all
have our things, I guess.”
It is a good album with
catchy tunes and it is easy to
relate to the lyrics in many of
the songs, like “Do You Feel.”
However, the downfall
of the album is that it only
has about four or five good
songs on it. The songs don’t
differ very much from each
other they way they are
played and sung either.
I would give this album a
grade of C.
ne of every athletes worst fear is getting
injured.
Unfortunately for some athletes, getting
hurt is a yearly event, such as junior
Dan Taylor, who broke his arm his sophomore
year and has now torn his ACL just this season.
“It sucks I get hurt so much,” Taylor said. “It really
discourages me for the next season.”
After a particular hard hit on Oct. 24 JV football
game, sophomore Devan Munk was taken off the
field to the hospital.
“It was pretty much the scariest thing I’ve ever
seen,” friend and teammate Jared Johnson, sophomore,
said. “I thought he was paralyzed or worse;
he just didn’t get up.”
“He was so still,” friend and teammate Blake Backman,
sophomore,
said. “At least he
is OK now.”
Fortunately
Munk’s injury
was only a serious
concussion, putting him out of school for a couple
days.
Injuries don’t just happen in high school; they also
happen in pro sports and at the college level as well.
This year in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills had a scare when
a player did not get up from the ground after making
a tackle.
Kevin Everett made a tackle in the Buffalo Bills -
he was paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors
me for the next season.” - Dan Taylor, junior
of right now Kevin Everett is walking with the help
of a specialized walker.
For many people sports are the best way to have
fun, but sometimes it can be harmful and unforgiving.
At times athletes obtain injuries so dreadful that
they never get up to go again. “The key is to not let
injury scare you away from what you do,” physical
therapist Darren Robinson said. “If you do get hurt,
just take the steps necessary to recover.”
Tiger’s season, they only lost
two games while winning the
rest to get them a State berth.
In the state tourney, the girls
lost an epic game in the first
round to be eliminated.
Both teams represented
IF as very good contenders
throughout the season. Both
teams are looking forward to
