PROSPECTUS 2010
ENGINEERING WITH BUSINESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME
Students who are interested in both engineering and business studies will
be able to have the best of both worlds when Ngee Ann introduces its new
Engineering with Business Management (EBM) programme next year.
Traditionally, students who wish to take up an engineering diploma are required
to indicate the specific engineering discipline they are interested in during the
application process.
However, under the EBM programme, students can choose the engineering
discipline they prefer towards the end of the first semester of Year 1. This will
allow them to gain a better understanding of the various disciplines before making
a more informed decision.
Besides enjoying more flexibility, students in the EBM pathway will also learn
business management modules delivered by the School of Business &
Accountancy. The broader curriculum is geared at producing the New Age
Engineer with the vision of a business leader.
Under this new EBM programme, students will have a choice of nine diplomas
to graduate in:
• Aerospace Electronics
• Aerospace Technology
• Audio-visual Technology
• Biomedical Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Electronic & Computer Engineering
67 SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING (SOE)

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING (SOE) 68
• Marine & Offshore Technology
• Mechanical Engineering
• Mechatronic Engineering
All first-year students taking the above engineering courses, including those who
opt for the EBM programme, will share a common curriculum in the first semester.
Towards the end of the first semester, the EBM freshman will select their preferred
engineering course while the other SoE freshman may choose to study business
management modules.
COURSES OFFERED
SoE offers a total of 18 full-time diploma courses, grouped by clusters. These
clusters are also related to several other courses. Please see table below.
One important aspect of Ngee Ann's Engineering courses is the option for
graduating students to participate in a six-month Internship or an in-house
Project Design & Development (PDD) programme. These provide our students
with experiential training and facilitate their passage into working life. They solve
real-life industrial issues encountered by our industry partners. Emphasis is also
placed on applied research projects.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Students from the School of Engineering actively participate in local and regional
competitions where they have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills
acquired in their courses.

At the Polytechnic Student Research Programme Award 2009 ceremony, a
student project from the Diploma in Biomedical Engineering won one of the Best
Project Awards. The research project, entitled Automatic Identification of Sleep
Apnea Using Physiological Signals, was a collaborative project with University
College Dublin (Ireland) and developed an automatic diagnosis that could easily
classify different classes of sleep apnea.
Students from the Diploma in Electronic & Computer Engineering won the
Champion Award as well as the Industry's Choice Award in the i-CREATe 2009
Student Design Challenge international competition. Their Head-Controlled
Motorized Wheelchair beat competition from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and
Hong Kong.
In the Amazing Science-X Challenge 2009 competition organised by DSO National
Laboratories in conjunction with the Singapore Science Centre and the National
University of Singapore, students from the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics won
the 3rd prize. Their 3-WAY RACE (Exploring the Classic Brachistochrone Problem)
project demonstrated a solution to one of the earliest problems posed in the
Calculus of Variation - to find the quickest path for an object descending under
gravity.
Teams comprising students from the Diploma in Electrical Engineering and the
Diploma in Audio-visual Technology entered the finals of the Worldskills Singapore
2008 Competition (“Industry Control” category). The team won a Gold Medal, a
Silver Medal and a Diploma of Excellence. The Gold Medal winning student also
represented Singapore in the World Skills Competition held in Calgary, Canada.
Engineering is not all nuts and bolts. Students from both the Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering and Diploma in Electronic & Computer Engineering pitted their creativity
against teams from NUS, NTU and SP at the Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS)
Kinetics Art Competition Finals. The ME team came in second with their entry
“Playful Dolphin” while the ECE team came in fourth with their entry “Globe of the
Future”.
