students, Bronte Richardson and Mitch McBurnie whose talents from previous musicals lives on as they study at university. Which leaves us with two staff for whom the whole school has the deepest regard and respect. Lucienne Howard has taken on the huge role of musical director and has captured the soul of the music and teased out the very best from our musicians. The consummate skill she has brought to the arrangement and conducting has made these musicians more than just a school orchestra. They have excelled in a demanding score providing seamless support to the cast. Marisa Carolan’s power as a director needs no introduction to our school. She is a true dynamo with vision, talent and a commanding presence that no one dares trespass against! The ultimate accolades go to the teacher who gives generously, demands high expectations of everyone and elicits performances that are the envy of professionals. We are indebted to her skill and talent. There are many moments when I am deeply proud of this school, and this is one of them. The synergy of so many talented people and resources has made an impact upon everybody but especially those students who have grown and thrived through this experience. Manly has triumphed again. P&C Meeting – last week the P&C confirmed two key dates in the school calendar. On the 1 st August next term the efforts of those who volunteer their time and skills in the school will be rewarded with a thank you get together themed around giving back to the community. It will be a catered evening on behalf of the P&C with details to follow. On the 19 th August that volunteering spirit will then be tested again with the next working bee organised by David Nord on behalf of the P&C Environment Committee. Please make a diary note of these dates. “The Nord Stadium”, new seating on the hill section of the playground, has been completed and unveiled this week. This reconstruction was a very demanding job with David Nord taking on most of the work giving of his time on weekends. This popular area is going to be in big demand when the weather clears! Approval has been given to purchase other seating for playground areas in coming months. Debating – this is the busiest time of year for debating. We wish the Year 12 team the very best today as they debate North Sydney Boys in the regional final. Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 teams are progressing well with many likely to win their zone competitions this term. We wish the Year 7/8 team the best in their first debate today. I am very pleased with the improved profile of debating and the success they have had in recent years following our investment in regular coaching and increased opportunities for as many students as possible to participate. A more detailed report will be given as the season comes closer to a close. Enrolments 2013 – many parents can give first hand evidence of their experiences with Manly but interested parents from other schools may seek further information. “Meet the Principal” tours are conducted in Weeks 3 and 8 every term, although extra tours are scheduled towards the end of Term 2/beginning of Term 3 when applications are due. The Annual School Report is available on the school website (www.manlyselective.nsw.edu.au) giving a detailed report of school performance and a chronicling of key events and achievements for previous years. The process for entering the school for Year 7 must go through the DEC Selective Schools Unit. Applications for enrolment in Years 8 – 12 will open in late June. This process will be advertised later when the forms become available through DEC. Parent Teacher Night – Parents of Year 9 will receive an email next week giving details of how to make online bookings. If all bookings are taken please contact the school so alternative arrangements can be made. Parents who are not able to gain access to online bookings can ring the school office for appointments to be made. Some staff will not be available on these nights and they will be advising classes beforehand about how to make contact with parents. These nights are very

important in our communications with the community. Congratulations to: Jet Hauge(Year 12 2011) upon achieving a perfect score in his SAT mathematics exams for entry into US universities and his acceptance as a freshman into UC Berkeley's College of Letters and Science. He flies out today for a 3‐day AFL camp down in Albury as part of the preparations for the national carnival. In this regular feature we like to recognize students who have achieved highly in school and community events, competitions and activities. Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic excellence, personal best and giving back to the community deserve to be recognized. Parents are invited to phone or email the school any achievements we may not be aware of for inclusion in The Weekly Pines. David Tomlin Principal Much appreciated! www.michaelsfinefoods.com.au. THANK YOU to Michael’s Fine Foods, who have supplied the dinners for the musical (at a good price to us).
