FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Musical “Oliver” ‐
The reputation the school has for spectacular
musical productions is well and truly secure.
Tonight and tomorrow night are the final
performances in what has been a near sellout
season. Audiences of parents and friends are
always going to be supportive but when outside
community members go out of their way to give
their wholehearted congratulations, every student,
parent and teacher involved can feel proud of
what they have achieved.
The time spent in the grand design, set design and
constructions, arrangements of music, costumes,
lighting and sound, makeup, catering, ticket sales,
photography and organization of a myriad of
people is extraordinary. Of course, the musicians
and performers are the ones we all see and hear
about but it is the sense of excitement and energy
that an event of this size and magnitude brings to
the school that is so important.
The size of this musical is testament to the talent
of the school. A core cast of 18 students with a
chorus of 47 were seamlessly supported by a
backstage crew of 23 who helped with props,
makeup, sound and lighting while 20 student and
staff musicians (and ex‐student Isaac Beton) were
exceptional in their professionalism. A team of 9
parents and students worked tirelessly through
many weekends and after hours to assemble a
stunning range of costumes and 12 parents kept
students and staff well fed through their catering.
Add all the incidental helpers who didn’t make it
onto the program and it is clear that this has been
an extraordinary production that has galvanized
the school and its community like no other event.
Of course there have to be a handful of people
who are the creative, administrative and technical
forces behind such a production. Angela Richards h
as again excelled with set and art design
recreating the atmosphere brilliantly, Ben Mills,
Chris Shea and Michael Goodear have used their
technical and stage directing skills to transform the
hall into a world away from school, Yoko Ichikawa
has led the makeup team that created new
characters out of our special students and Neda
Joyce and parent Annie McCubbin have helped
make characters so credible through their drama
coaching. Stephen Rutherford and Amanda
Dwight and have ensured a digital record of the
production will last for many years.
A very special team who have spent months
researching, sewing and leading a team of amateur
costume makers are Gabielle Duffy, Carol Sherlock
and Judy Boylan. The amount of time they have
spent in the costume room and the detail included
in the multitude of costumes cannot be
overstated. All of the parents who helped in this
side of the production share this admiration. Judy
has also been her usual superwoman in managing
the administration of such a big budget
production.
What has distinguished this year’s production is
that the choreography has been done by two ex‐
students, Bronte Richardson and Mitch McBurnie
whose talents from previous musicals lives on as
they study at university.
Which leaves us with two staff for whom the
whole school has the deepest regard and respect.
Lucienne Howard has taken on the huge role of
musical director and has captured the soul of the
music and teased out the very best from our
musicians. The consummate skill she has brought
to the arrangement and conducting has made
these musicians more than just a school orchestra.
They have excelled in a demanding score providing
seamless support to the cast. Marisa Carolan’s
power as a director needs no introduction to our
school. She is a true dynamo with vision, talent
and a commanding presence that no one dares
trespass against! The ultimate accolades go to the
teacher who gives generously, demands high
expectations of everyone and elicits performances
that are the envy of professionals. We are
indebted to her skill and talent.
There are many moments when I am deeply proud
of this school, and this is one of them. The synergy
of so many talented people and resources has
made an impact upon everybody but especially
those students who have grown and thrived
through this experience. Manly has triumphed
again.
P&C Meeting – last week the P&C confirmed two
key dates in the school calendar. On the 1 st August
next term the efforts of those who volunteer their
time and skills in the school will be rewarded with
a thank you get together themed around giving
back to the community. It will be a catered evening
on behalf of the P&C with details to follow. On the
19 th August that volunteering spirit will then be
tested again with the next working bee organised
by David Nord on behalf of the P&C Environment
Committee. Please make a diary note of these
dates.
“The Nord Stadium”, new seating on the hill
section of the playground, has been completed
and unveiled this week. This reconstruction was a
very demanding job with David Nord taking on
most of the work giving of his time on weekends.
This popular area is going to be in big demand
when the weather clears! Approval has been given
to purchase other seating for playground areas in
coming months.
Debating – this is the busiest time of year for
debating. We wish the Year 12 team the very best
today as they debate North Sydney Boys in the
regional final. Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 teams are
progressing well with many likely to win their zone
competitions this term. We wish the Year 7/8 team
the best in their first debate today. I am very
pleased with the improved profile of debating and
the success they have had in recent years
following our investment in regular coaching and
increased opportunities for as many students as
possible to participate. A more detailed report will
be given as the season comes closer to a close.
Enrolments 2013 – many parents can give first
hand evidence of their experiences with Manly but
interested parents from other schools may seek
further information. “Meet the Principal” tours are
conducted in Weeks 3 and 8 every term, although
extra tours are scheduled towards the end of Term
2/beginning of Term 3 when applications are due.
The Annual School Report is available on the
school website (www.manlyselective.nsw.edu.au)
giving a detailed report of school performance and
a chronicling of key events and achievements for
previous years. The process for entering the school
for Year 7 must go through the DEC Selective
Schools Unit. Applications for enrolment in Years 8
– 12 will open in late June. This process will be
advertised later when the forms become available
through DEC.
Parent Teacher Night – Parents of Year 9 will
receive an email next week giving details of how to
make online bookings. If all bookings are taken
please contact the school so alternative
arrangements can be made. Parents who are not
able to gain access to online bookings can ring the
school office for appointments to be made. Some
staff will not be available on these nights and they
will be advising classes beforehand about how to
make contact with parents. These nights are very
important in our communications with the
community.
Lifeline ‐ the school is happy to support the June
Lifeline Book Fair, which runs from June 22 nd to
June 24 th at the Balgowlah Boys High School Hall,
Balgowlah. These book fairs are a significant
fundraising activity for Lifeline Northern Beaches
enabling our community programs such as suicide
prevention, and the management of bereavement,
anger and problem gambling. Lifeline Northern
Beaches Inc offers 24 hours telephone counselling
and a variety of other support services including
personal counselling, financial counselling, services
for the elderly and emergency relief on the
northern beaches. They have been servicing the
Northern Beaches area of Sydney for over 40 years
and enjoy the assistance of over 400 volunteers.
In this regular feature we like to recognize
students who have achieved highly in school and
community events, competitions and activities.
Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic
excellence, personal best and giving back to the
community deserve to be recognized. Parents are
invited to phone or email the school any
achievements we may not be aware of for
inclusion in The Weekly Pines.
The show is over, but the
work goes on …
After the last curtain falls on Saturday night, the
task of restoring our school must begin. I would
really appreciate the help of as many willing hands
as possible on SUNDAY from 10am. We have to
clear the dressing rooms and return racks to the
costume room, but more importantly we must
WASH all those fabulous clothes. If you can take a
load (or two) of washing and promise to return it
fairly soon we would be very grateful.
You’ll find me in the dressing rooms beside the hall
(or in the costume room) on Sunday morning.
Many thanks in anticipation of the usual generous
assistance.
COLLEGE
SPORT
Thank you to the boys who played in the term 2
Peninsula Cup Competition. It was a very wet affair
and only 4 matches were played because of the
rain washing it all out. Thanks also go to Ms Cowan
and Mr Rios who were the coaches of these young
men. Their efforts were greatly appreciated. We
look forward to a much drier girls Peninsula Cup
Competition next term.
Girls Soccer Trials:
Peninsular Cup:
This is a mid‐week competition for term 3. There
are two Divisions Junior (Years 7 & 8) and Senior
(Years 9‐12). There are an enormous number of
young women playing soccer on the Peninsula. I
would be very keen to place one or maybe two
teams in each division. There will be a training
session on Thursday 21 June at Freshwater
Campus, 4pm start. All players very welcome.
Netball
Congratulations to the College netball team. They
will play in the regional finals against Lisarow on 22
June at Narrabeen Indoor Sport Centre 11am. A
massive thank you to Vicki Maggs and all her
efforts as coach.
Hockey
Congratulations to the College Hockey team. The
girls are regional champions and will play in the
State Championships next term. Sue Saunders has
to take a bow. She has instigated this team and
driven their success. Well done and thank you.
Softball
Congratulation to the girls’ softball team ‐ they
