The use of NAND flash in embedded systems is one of the strongest 

trends in the industry. Some forecasts estimate that 2.5 billion NAND 

devices will be sold this year, with predictions of substantial year-onyear 

growth over the coming years. NAND flash has many advantages 

for embedded systems; high-volume storage at low cost, very fast access 

times, and very fast erase times make them ideal candidates for thousands 

of applications. But this feature set does not come without a cost; 

the devices are relatively complex to use and require a deeper understanding 

than more conventional memory devices. The major players 

in the industry are very much focused on supplying their main customers: 

manufacturers of SSDs, USB drives, Flash cards, and Mobile 

phones – indeed anyone who buys these devices in huge quantities. This 

means that when designers of embedded devices are researching the 

field, they must consider what is really available to them; the latest and 

greatest is probably reserved for certain target customers. In any case 

for these customers they are sold on reels in quantities that may be unrealistic 

for lower volume embedded designs. Read more in our cover

Low power leads to smaller power supplies, less expensive batteries, and 

enables products to be powered by signal lines. Current consumption 

is usually the only measure considered when describing the power 

characteristics of a chip. This is a mistake, because decreasing the 

operating voltage directly reduces the current consumption and the 

overall power drain. Current consumption increases directly with the 

system clock frequency so keeping the system clock as low as possible 

is critical to keeping power consumption down. Read more how

NAND Flash Overview 

All NAND flash is arranged as a set of blocks 

that are further subdivided into pages. Each 

page consists of a data area that has a number 

of bytes equal to a power of 2, as well as an 

additional set of bytes – the spare area that may 

be considered as a scratch pad for system 

maintenance. As with all flash the block must be 

erased before pages can be written. Most of the 

latest NAND flash devices also have additional 

restriction that pages may only be programmed 

incrementally and these pages must be programmed 

incrementally within the block. The 

spare area has three primary functions in most 

NAND flash system designs: 

■ To store bad block information 

■ To store error correction codes 

■ To store meta-data for management 

of the flash translation layer 

It is important to note that all the bits in a 

NAND device are subject to failure, and that 

bits of the spare area are just as likely to fail as 

bits in the data area. Therefore, any error correction 

algorithm must allow for corrupt bits in 

the stored ECC, in the meta-data, and in any 

other data that are stored in the spare area. 

NAND size parameters have been growing 

rapidly. Pages have grown from 512bytes to 8K 

and more. Chip sizes have grown from 

256Mbits to recently-announced devices with 

512Gbits or more. The number of dies in one 

package has now reached eight. This results in 

more-complex chip select handling. With all 

this, the error rates, and hence the error correction 

requirements, have also been growing!

increasing chip capacity is a direct result of the 

die shrinkage, to line widths much less than 

35nm, which allows the expansion of capacity. 

The table summarizes typical NAND flash 

characteristics of high-end devices and how 

they have developed. The higher ECC requirement 

– the number of bits that must be correctable 

for the chip to guarantee its write/erase 

cycle limit – results in significant design issues. 

By choosing smaller devices, the more challenging 

design aspects can be reversed. The 

main penalty for this is that the price per unit 

of storage rises. The latest high-end NAND 

flash has the lowest price per GB. 

System Architecture 

Designing firmware to handle the issues raised 

by NAND flash usually results in a system similar 

to that depicted in diagram. Above the 

physical device is a low-level driver that handles 

the direct access to the NAND and also devicespecific 

features of the NAND – in particular 

the bad block detection algorithm and the ECC 

calculation. Containing all the device-specific 

functionality in the driver allows the design of 

a flash translation layer that is target-independent. 

The primary function of the flash translation 

layer (FTL) is to provide a logical block 

interface so that the application and the file 

system need not care what is going on under-

neath. The application simply addresses a range 

of uniform sectors numbered 0 to the maximum 

number of sectors minus 1. Note that this 

maximum number of sectors for any NAND 

flash will be less than the total size of the physical 

device because a number of blocks must be 

excluded from the system by the FTL to handle 

the manufactured bad blocks and bad blocks 

that develop as well as for management areas for 

the FTL system. Typically this “loss” of storage 

space is well under 2% of the available blocks. 

An additional function of the FTL is to provide 

wear-leveling. Because the longevity of the 

device is specified per block, it is important to 

ensure that the blocks over the system are worn 

evenly. There are two types of wear-leveling – 

dynamic and static. Dynamic wear-leveling 

means that when a block is selected the leastused 

available block is used. With static wear-

leveling, the system looks for blocks that have 

been little used. For instance they may contain 

static data such as the operating system or fixed 

system parameters, which static wear-leveling 

swaps into the main pool. In general, dynamic 

wear-leveling is of limited usefulness. Static 

wear-leveling is the only mechanism that 

guarantees even usage. Good static wear-leveling 

algorithms are deceptively complex to 

implement, and they must be careful not to be 

counter-productive. 

Making a Fail-Safe system 

For embedded designs where the data stored on 

the NAND flash is valuable, it is important to 

use a fail-safe system. There are several things to 

consider. The vast majority of FTLs are not failsafe. 

This is well proven by testing commercial 

flash cards by removing the power while writing. 

Only a very few FTLs will prove to be reliable. 

Fail-safety in our definition means that, if a 

write is started, then it is either completed or the 

original data remains in place. There should be 

no indeterminate states for sectors. It is also 

important that the sectors be committed in the 

sequence that they are written. Without these 

specifications, there are very few file systems that 

can handle all the possible results of an unexpected 

reset. Hardware designs must take into 

consideration that when the power drops below 

the specification for programming then the device 

should be reset and the controlling system 

should be notified or reset. Without this measure 

the disk can be corrupted very quickly and 

unnecessary bad blocks are likely to be created 

when operating out of specification. 

How to do the ECC? 

Finding an appropriate and efficient solution is 

often the trickiest part of designing with 

NAND flash. One needs to balance several 

parameters: cost per byte, size of storage, 

performance and CPU overhead. This is complicated 

by the level of support provided by 

microcontrollers for the ECC function. Such 

support varies widely and may also affect

system load. One-bit correction is relatively simple 

to implement. Some microcontrollers have 

support for this but, when this is not available, 

a software algorithm that does cross parity 

checking can be very efficient and will add only 

a minimal overhead to the system. However, for 

a higher number of ECC bits, more-complex algorithms 

are required. Even when only 3-bit correction 

is required per 512 bytes, it is necessary 

to use BCH/Reed-Solomon algorithms. The 

problem with these algorithms is that, for most 

microcontroller systems, the CPU overhead of 

a software implementation is prohibitive and the 

performance hit is unacceptable. An additional 

problem is that execution time of the algorithm 

is a rapidly increasing function of the number of 

bits to be corrected and there is an attendant increase 

in the number of ECC bytes to be used. 

Therefore, for NAND flash devices that require 

more than the cross parity checking algorithm, 

it is necessary to find hardware support, 

typically in the microcontroller. For the micro - 

controller manufacturers this is difficult; 

typically only those microcontrollers that are 

specifically designed for multimedia applications 

include algorithms to handle 20 or more 

correction bits. For users of other microcontrollers, 

it is necessary to choose NAND devices 

that match the microcontroller’s error correcting 

capability. If there is no ECC module in the 

device then the only option is to use devices that 

require no more than 1 bit correction. 

A solution for some of these problems can be 

found in managed NAND. Typically these 

devices include appropriate ECC algorithms and 

therefore this design issue is removed. This 

section on ECC is a brief overview of the subject. 

It is also important to look at the details of any 

specific ECC implementation, and to consider 

how it will be realized in software. Additionally, 

some thought should be given to how the ECC 

algorithm will perform later in the flash device’s 

life, when faulty bits occur more frequently. 

Alternatives 

There are many alternatives to using raw 

NAND for embedded designs. These may be 

effective particularly when the design under 

consideration is being produced in relatively 

low volumes or is not as cost-sensitive as largevolume 

consumer electronics products. The 

main options include: 

■ Managed NAND. This usually takes the form 

of a NAND chip with additional logic. Some 

types may include only the ECC function; 

others may also include a complete FTL. 

■ Flash cards/chips. These have standard, easy 

to use interfaces. Designers should be careful 

to note the issues of fail-safety that surround 

standard consumer parts. ■

widgets for quick design 

development. 

■ Today in the era of continual technological 

advances, consumers have come to expect 

products and services that provide the latest in 

cutting-edge technology. Even the simplest 

coffee maker has a high-tech profile. Consequently, 

manufacturers have found themselves 

competing to produce devices that are not only 

innovative and advanced, but have an attractive 

techie look and feel as well. Implementing technologies 

that add visual appeal to appliances, 

while increasing the ease-of-use, such as an 

effective graphic interface, is becoming 

increasingly important. 

The majority of us are touched by graphic 

interfaces on a daily basis. Our lives would be 

very different without these easy-to-use 

displays. In the very near future, it will be difficult 

to use a washing machine, microwave, 

home lighting system, or automobile without 

using some sort of graphic display. Many 

developers, however, do not deal with graphics 

on a daily basis, and may not be familiar with 

the most effective way to implement a visually 

appealing, technologically advanced display. In 

order to produce high-quality graphics and 

animations, while also incorporating intuitive 

operation and user guidance, graphics libraries 

that implement these functions are needed. 

Cypho, developed by Fujitsu Microelectronics 

Embedded Solutions Austria, meets these 

requirements. 

A lot is demanded of the products: small memory 

and low processor output mean the graphics 

software must be optimally adjusted to the 

product requirements in order to remain within 

the defined cost structure; larger memories 

or faster processors generally lead to a massive 

increase in material costs. At the same time, a 

broad range of functions as well as intuitive operating 

concepts need to be supported. It is not 

just about displaying as much information as 

possible; it is about presenting this information 

to the user in a suitable form. Menu navigation 

is increasingly moving away from the classic list 

presentation format. In modern devices, menu 

structures are presented to the user through 

icons (e.g. grid presentation) or in another form 

(e.g. scroll wheel). These formats allow a better 

menu structure that users can follow intuitively 

without having to consult a manual each 

time. 

Consumers have come to expect products and 

services that provide the latest in cutting-edge 

technology, even on lower-end products. For 

this reason designers need a software graphics 

library that provides ready-made and (where 

desired) animated widgets that enable them to 

design user interfaces to meet the highest level 

of customer expectations. It is also important 

that the programmer is not restricted when creating 

the design - Cypho allows all the parameters 

of a widget to be changed. In addition, the

designer has the option of modifying the look 

and feel of widgets according to requirements. 

This means, for example, that a corporate design 

can be transferred to the products, creating 

a strong brand image and offering further product 

differentiation. 

The Cypho graphics library relieves the programmer 

of a large number of tasks. The use of 

lay-outers means that design elements can be 

presented regardless of the size of the display 

and the resolution. It is therefore no longer necessary 

to convert co-ordinates manually when 

changing parameters – Cypho carries out these 

tasks automatically. These automatic functions 

can provide a crucial advantage, particularly in 

very large and complex display systems. It also 

means the source code remains more manageable 

and streamlined and is therefore easier to 

adjust or extend at a later stage. The Cypho 

graphics library has a large number of readymade 

widgets to enable implementation of display 

systems in various sectors: industrial, automotive 

and medical are only a few of the sectors 

in which Cypho is already used. 

So that existing designs can be used for a wide 

variety of products, the appearance and behaviour 

of the widgets are kept separate from 

each other. This makes it possible to maintain 

the function of the application while enabling 

the design to be adapted for various uses or cus-

tomers. Cypho was originally developed

The experience gained in this field 

with respect to multi-media support 

for battery-operated devices 

means the library can be transferred 

easily to other systems (heating, 

industrial controls, white 

goods etc). The use of thumbnails/icons 

simplifies menu navigation 

for the user, so that he can 

find his way around the menu 

structure intuitively. Images can be 

used in various formats to enhance 

visual refinement. Alpha 

blending technology (overlapping 

of content and transparencies) is 

also integrated. Today, it is impossible 

to imagine modern displays 

without this technology. 

To prevent the question of linguistic 

barriers from arising, 

Cypho supports both left-to-right 

and right-to-left as well as bidirectional 

text. Separating the languages 

into a Western language 

pack and an Eastern language pack 

allows the products to be customised 

for particular markets. 

The language tool supports the 

translation work by selecting all 

the words that need to be translated. 

These are written in a table, 

which is then sent to a translation 

agency. The result can then be integrated 

into the visualisation 

again with the aid of the language 

tool. This mechanism saves a great 

deal of time when creating multilingual 

operating concepts.

As it is likely the underlying platforms 

will need to be extended or 

reorganised in the course of time 

for many products, Cypho uses a 

special abstraction layer. As a result, 

the underlying hardware can 

be replaced easily and quickly, 

without changing the functionality 

or the graphic appearance. To 

improve performance further, an 

asynchronous display update has 

been chosen. This means that 

changes are displayed on the 

screen only when all the necessary 

screen adjustments have been 

made and the display update has 

been initiated. This mechanism 

prevents periodic writing of the 

screen content from using too 

much processor capacity and slowing 

down user guidance. Another 

advantage is that the widgets do 

not depend on the resolution and 

colour depth of displays. Even different 

buttons, soft keys, touch 

screens etc, are supported. 

Tools are also supplied with the 

graphics library to simplify use 

and product design. Cypho offers 

tools that allow graphics in any format 

(PNG, JPEG, GIF, etc) to be 

imported into a format that has 

been optimised for embedded devices. 

In addition, TrueType fonts 

of any kind can be converted into 

a format that is compatible with 

embedded devices. ■

Industrial display series with 7” screen 

diagonals and LED backlighting

The 7-inch WVGA format is 

becoming established as a 

new standard display size for 

a wide range of industrial and 

consumer applications. Sharp 

is addressing this development 

with the introduction of 

a new series of five 7-inch fitfor-industry 

TFT LCDs that 

cover the entire range of 

applications with a variety of 

technical designs – from a 

consumer version to the 

Strong2 model. 

■ The 7-inch screen diagonal in 16:9 format is 

turning out to be the ideal display size for a wide 

variety of applications. According to estimates 

from iSuppli, the market for display sizes of 5 to 

9 inches is likely to grow by almost 70 percent in 

terms of units over the next 4 years until 2013, 

while the overall market for small-format displays 

up to 20 inches will grow by about 9 percent. 

More and more mobility is being required 

of applications in almost every sector. 

The 7-inch format is increasingly looking like 

the ideal display size – large enough to clearly 

display the most complex operation menus and 

documents, as well as image and film material; 

small enough to make the whole application 

genuinely portable in the literal sense of the 

word. The range of applications is vast and 

ranges from industrial control systems and 

portable test/measurement/input devices right 

across all industrial sectors – logistics, traffic, 

medicine, vehicle construction and repairs, hotels 

and restaurants etc – right up to consumer 

applications such as Pocket PCs, media players 

and electronic picture frames. Apart from the 

display size, the technical specifications are 

very different, depending on the application. 

In order to cover a complete range, Sharp will 

present a series of five fit-for-industry 7-inch 

TFT LCDs in the first half of 2010. They range 

from robust screens in the Strong2 class with enhanced 

mechanical resilience and an extended 

temperature range of -30°C to 80°C to a light 

LQ070Y3DG3A version designed for consumerlike 

applications with an operating temperature 

of -10°C to 60°C. This display is also available 

as a touch-screen model (LQ070Y3DG3B). 

The resistive touch-screen is integrated directly 

into the frame of the LCD module and bonded 

onto the LCD panel without any air gap. Its 

many advantages include its optical qualities: at 

300cd/m², the new 7-inch model achieves relatively 

high brightness compared to other touchscreens 

and it has the same contrast as its sister 

model without touch-screen. Another feature of

the TFT LCD is its slim design. With an installation 

depth of 7.1 millimetres, the touchscreen 

display is only 1.1 millimetres thicker 

than the version without a touch-screen 

(LQ070Y3DG3A). Thanks to resistive technology, 

you can even use the touch-screen with 

gloves on or with a pen, not just your bare fingers. 

A decisive advantage when it comes to 

using the displays at low temperatures, e.g. in 

control units for construction, agricultural 

and forestry machinery, in industrial plants and 

in diagnosis and monitoring systems for the 

medical sector and rescue services.

As well as a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, all 

five new 7-inch industrial displays also have 

LED-based backlighting. For industrial applications, 

the main advantages of this backlighting 

in comparison to traditional CCFL 

backlights are the extremely rapid response 

characteristics and excellent dimmability of 

LEDs. The display brightness can be easily controlled 

by photodiodes, depending on the 

ambient light. This is a particular advantage 

for all outdoor and semi-outdoor applications, 

which are often exposed to changing light 

conditions, with the result that the display 

brightness needs to be adapted automatically 

to ensure constantly good legibility. Backlight 

control based on the ambient light also 

helps lower the average power consumption, as 

a reduced level of display brightness is enough 

to ensure optimum image display in darker 

ambient conditions. 

The low-voltage power supply provides further 

benefits. In the new 7-inch displays, the backlight 

consists of up to 24 LEDs that require a 

total supply voltage of up to 26 volts. The omission 

of the high-voltage inverter that would 

have been necessary for CCFL lamps means 

that EMI characteristics are better; high-frequency 

voltage inverters can have an influence 

on the rest of the electronics through inducted 

magnetic alternating fields and often cause 

noise that does not occur with low direct voltages. 

Secondly, the elimination of the need for 

voltage inverters reduces the system complexity, 

particularly as the use of high voltage is subject 

to extensive requirements worldwide with 

regard to device design. Thirdly, high voltage 

cannot be used for some special applications 

such as areas where there is a particular risk of 

explosion – CCFL backlit displays are not 

approved for such areas and power supplies 

with CCFL displays must be placed away from 

the potentially explosive areas. 

LED backlighting also has strengths in mechanical 

terms. With an installation depth of 

only 6 to 9 millimetres (depending on the 

model), the new 7-inch TFT LCDs from Sharp 

are less than half as thick as comparable CCFL 

versions. They are also more mechanically robust, 

as LEDs are far less breakable than the glass 

bodies of cold cathode lamps. This makes mechanical 

design simpler and increases resilience. 

The most crucial point of LED backlit industrial 

displays is temperature management. 

Technology wise, LEDs are far superior to 

CCFLs at low temperatures; at ambient temperatures 

under 0°C, LED backlights can 

achieve a service life of up to 200,000 hours in 

some cases and provide full light output as 

soon as they are switched on. At the other end 

of the temperature scale, CCFLs have the 

advantage, as they have a particularly long 

service life under high ambient temperatures. 

For technological reasons, LED backlighting 

causes local heat accumulation on the lighting 

modules. This heat must be discharged effectively, 

as it could otherwise damage the LCD 

panel and the backlighting itself, which would 

cause significant reductions in service life - particularly 

if the display is operated in a high temperature 

range. In order to make it possible to 

use the benefits of LED backlighting under 

extremely high temperatures, Sharp has developed 

a special chassis for LED backlit industrial 

displays. In contrast to traditional 

LCDs in which the CCFL backlight is only 


replaced by an insert fitted with LEDs - often 

made from plastic - the backlighting for the 

Sharp industrial displays is thermally coupled 

directly to the mechanical parts of the module. 

This means that waste heat is efficiently 

discharged into the environment via the rear of 

the display, ensuring that there is no damaging 

heat accumulation even at high ambient 

temperatures. Like all Strong2 displays, the 

Strong2 Display (LQ070Y3LG1C) from the 

7-inch series is designed to operate in temperatures 

of -30°C to 80°C and is capable of 

achieving a service life of 50,000 hours under 

these conditions. ■

Innovative techniques reduce power 

consumption of 8-bit MCUs

replacing passive or 

mechanical components. 

Common to all is the 

requirement for very low 

power consumption, but 

enough for the product 

specification. This article 

highlights some of many 

ways to reduce the 

power consumption. 

■ Low power also leads to smaller power supplies, 

less expensive batteries, and enables products 

to be powered by signal lines (such as fire 

alarm wires) lowering the cost of the endproduct. 

Although power consumption is the 

product of operating voltage (Vcc) multiplied by 

the current consumption (Icc), current consumption 

is usually the only measure considered 

when describing the power characteristics of a 

chip. This is a mistake, because decreasing the 

operating voltage directly reduces the current 

consumption and the overall power drain. Current 

consumption increases directly with the system 

clock frequency so keeping the system clock 

as low as possible is critical to keeping power 

consumption down. The clock frequency is affected 

by a number of factors that include the 

surroundings and peripheral set of the microcontroller 

as well as the architecture and the 

instruction set. RISC microcontrollers typically 

execute in a single clock cycle but some architectures 

divide the clock down in the same way 

as CISC architectures do before feeding it to the 

CPU. This situation leads to confusion about 

what clock frequency is really required to 

execute the target application. 

Designers should pay close attention to the Instruction 

set architecture when reading the current 

consumption numbers in a microcontroller 

datasheet. Most datasheets provide 

power consumption numbers for the micro- 

controller with no peripherals running. The additional 

current drawn by the peripherals must 

be taken into account since all MCUs have peripherals 

and their contribution to power drain 

can be significant. Temperature is another factor. 

Since higher temperatures lead to higher 

power consumption, designers should always 

consider the power numbers for worst-case 

temperatures. 

In many applications, the processor does not 

run continuously and peripherals may be idle 

much of the time. The overall power consumption 

can be lowered by taking advantage of various 

sleep modes available on virtually all 

processors. The most common sleep modes are 

power down (PWD), power save (PS) and idle. 

In power down mode everything is shut down, 

including the clock source. In power save mode 

everything is turned off except a 32 kHz clock 

running from a crystal to keep track of time. Idle 

mode is a shallow sleep mode where only parts 

of the device are shut down but the main parts 

of the microcontroller are running. The advantage 

of having multiple sleep modes is the flexibility 

it provides to shut down any part of the 

microcontroller that is not absolutely necessary 

to the function at hand. The amount of power 

that can be saved depends on the mode being 

using. For example with a 1.8V supply voltage 

operating at 1 MHz and 25ºC, ATmega165P 

AVR controller from Atmel consumes 340μA in

active mode, 150μA in idle mode, 0.65μA in 

power save mode and a scant 0.1μA in power 

down mode. 

Since a microcontroller can spend substantial 

amounts of time inactive, it is important to consider 

power consumption in sleep modes as well 

as active power consumption. Many designers 

use a power budget to determine the average 

power consumption and to calculate the battery 

requirements. Although a great deal of attention 

is paid to active power consumption, the most 

important mode to consider really depends on 

the duty cycle between the various sleep and active 

modes. In applications such as thermostats, 

keyless entry, or security systems the processor 

spends most of its time idle. For these applications, 

sleep mode may represent the lion’s share 

of power consumption and will be the most important 

parameter to consider. 

Modern microcontrollers are built on digital 

CMOS logic that is, in theory, only consuming 

power when the logical or clock signals are 

changing state. A signal is toggled when it has 

a transition from 0 to 1 or vice versa. Based on 

this theory, sleep current consumption should 

be equal to zero. In real life, the picture is a bit 

more complex. Although sleep mode power 

consumption approaches zero, current leakage 

and peripherals that remain active can consume 

quite a bit of power. The temperature, the sup-

ply voltage and the process technology affect the 

leakage current. Some microcontroller manufacturers 

use proprietary processes specifically 

developed for low power operation based on 

years of research and experience. These processes 

can provide sleep currents down to 100nA 

due to the power-optimized process and the 

ability to operate at a true 1.8V supply voltage. 

Some microcontrollers that claim 1.8V operation 

voltage actually must use voltages as high 

as 2.2V for analog modules or flash writing to 

work properly. The biggest contributors to 

sleep mode power consumption are active peripherals. 

Enabling internal analog or digital 

modules can cause a significant increase in the 


overall current consumption but can be difficult 

to evaluate. While well-documented microcontrollers 

describe this additional current 

consumption in their datasheet, others claim 

that this current consumption equals zero. 

This is very seldom a correct statement especially 

when it comes to analog features. When 

it is correct, the zero power features are likely to 

have poor performance. The power consumption 

in digital logic is mainly due to the toggling 

frequency, the capacitive load, and the supply 

voltage. The power consumption in analog 

modules is, on the other hand, static. There is 

often a trade-off between power consumption 

and robustness, accuracy, speed and fast start-

difference between them is mainly the accuracy. 

The RTC allows proper timing due to the 

very accurate 32 kHz oscillator while a VLO is 

very inaccurate and not suited for time-critical 

functions. In theory, digital CMOS logic consumes 

power only when the logical signals or 

the clock signals are toggling. A signal is toggled 

when it has a transition from 0 to 1 or a 

transition from 1 to 0. When all the digital signals 

are static, as in power down mode, only 

leakage current and current used to enable analog 

modules is consumed. The power consumption 

in an MCU can be calculated with 

the following equation: 

The single most important analog module in 

terms of power consumption during a sleep 

mode is the brown-out detector (BOD). A BOD 

protects the microcontroller when the supply 

voltage falls below its operating threshold by resetting 

the device. This keeps the microcontroller 

in a defined state when the Vcc is below 

its operating threshold. The BOD is not important 

to the microcontroller while it is in 

sleep mode but it is extremely important when 

it wakes up. Therefore, as a rule, most microcontrollers 

keep the BOD active during sleep 

mode and it contributes substantially to sleep 

mode power consumption. There are two ways 

of getting around BOD power consumption in 

sleep mode: making a zero-power BOD, or turning 

the BOD off altogether. 

Since the BOD must be functional when the 

controller wakes up, making a zero-power BOD 

may seem like the most attractive option. However, 

lowering the power to the analog module 

can make it very slow and make it respond too 

slowly to an out-of-range voltage supply. Since 

the microcontroller is not running any code or 

writing or erasing the flash or EEPROM in sleep 

mode, the BOD is not really necessary. However, 

it does need to be operational the moment 

the controller wakes up. The solution to this 

problem is to have the microcontroller shut 

down the BOD when it enters sleep mode and 

start it again just before leaving sleep mode. This 

approach ensures the BOD is functioning when 

it is needed without any current penalty while in 

sleep mode. 

In many applications, the time spent in active 

mode is insignificant compared to the time 

spent in power save mode with everything 

turned off except a real-time clock and the

Where F Toggle is the toggling frequency, 

C Load is the capacitive load and VDD is the 

supply voltage. In addition a small adder is 

made by the leakage current of the digital logic 

and the current consumed by analog modules 

in idle mode but these are minor components 

in active current consumption. 

The toggling frequency for a given device can be 

seen as the number of gates toggling to achieve 

a certain task. This can be reduced by minimizing 

both the number of gates and the 

number of times each gate needs to toggle. 

Clock gating is used to reduce the toggling frequency. 

A clock signal can be stopped using a 

gating element. Any clock distribution or clock 

domain that is gated is frozen and will not consume 

any power. A gating element must handle 

any spike issue on the clock signal. For example, 

the Atmel AVR microcontroller features three 

main levels of clock gating. These and other 

techniques mentioned in this article are incorporated 

into the Atmel picoPower technology 

used in the AVR family of microcontrollers. 


The first level of clock gating is the sleep 

modes. The sleep modes gate the clock distribution 

to a group of functionality thereby enabling 

different levels of sleep and functionality. 

Idle mode gates the CPU clock domain and 

the flash clock domain while the peripherals 

and interrupt system continue to operate. The 

ADC noise reduction mode allows the ADC to 

operate while most of the peripheral clock domains, 

in addition to the CPU clock domain, 

and the flash clock domain are gated. The 

power down mode gates all clock domains on 

the AVR and only enabled asynchronous operation 

is allowed. The external oscillator is also 

stopped in power down mode. The power save 

mode is the same as power down mode except 

that the asynchronous timer can operate when 

it is enabled. The standby mode is the same as 

power down mode except that the main oscillator 

is kept running. The extended standby 

mode is the same as power save mode except 

that the main oscillator is kept running. 

The response time for wake-up from sleep 

mode is only six clock cycles when the internal 

RC oscillator or an external clock is selected as 

the clock source. Power consumption during 

the wake-up session is less than in idle mode. 

This means that the AVR can wake up from 

sleep mode and re-enter the sleep mode again 

with extremely-low energy consumption and 

spend a very short time during wake up and active 

mode. The second level of clock gating is 

the power reduction register (PRR). Many 

peripheral modules are only used for a short 

period of time or not at all. The power reduction 

register contains control bits for disabling 

unused peripheral modules. The entire clock 

distribution to disabled peripheral modules is 

gated. This is more powerful than just disabling 

the module by its enable bit, since the modules 

I/O registers are disabled by the PRR. 

The PRR is controlled by software that allows 

the user to turn on and off peripheral modules 

at any time. The current state is frozen and all 

I/O registers are inaccessible when the peripheral 

module is disabled by the power reduction register. 

When re-enabled, the peripheral module 

continues in the same state as before it was disabled. 

Disabling one peripheral module results 

in a reduction of 5 to 10% of the total power 

consumption in active mode, and 10 to 20% of 

the total power consumption in idle mode. 

Designs without clock gating update all registers 

every clock cycle. If no change has taken place, 

the register is updated with its previous state, 

unnecessarily consuming power. Automatic 

clock gating (or multi-level clock gating) only allows 

the clock through when an update is required 

(i.e. when a value has changed). Rather 

than updating the register with the previous 

state, the clock to the register is gated. ■

against the need for higher 

equipment availability, industrial 

automation depends on 

effective diagnostic concepts 

and efficient handling of 

parameter data. Modern sensors 

and actuators enable this 

but have not been efficiently 

connectable to the whole 

automation system. The IO- 

Link transceiver offers new 

possibilities. 

■ In industrial automation technology, sensors 

and actuators are still mostly connected to the 

control via switching 24V or standard analog 

signals. This is a laborious and unnecessarily expensive 

procedure, considering that there are 

now significantly more efficient and space-saving 

solutions such as, for example, the IO-Link 

transceiver E981.10 from Elmos. With the help 

of this highly integrated IC, process, parameter 

and diagnostic data can be securely transmitted 

digitally coded via a single 3-wire connection, 

with a transmission speed up to 230.4 kbps. 

What is more, the innovative communications 

component enables bi-directional communication 

with I/O field devices. It is therefore time 

for a technology change. 

Today, the on-going balancing act between cost 

reduction on the one side and higher equipment 

availability on the other depends in automation 

technology on effective diagnostic 

concepts and efficient handling of parameter 

data. Modern sensors and actuators establish 

the necessary conditions for this. However it has 

not so far been possible to efficiently implement 

their connection to the whole automation system. 

But now IO-Link, as an innovative interface, 

offers completely new possibilities. In contrast 

to typical fieldbus systems, IO-Link uses 

parallel wiring, enabling data rates of up to 

230.4 kbps to be transmitted over a maximum 

cable length of 20m. The signal transmission 

takes place by means of 24V pulse modulation 

and a standard UART protocol. IO-Link uses 

the standardized unshielded 3-wire connection 

cable (M12, M8, M5), which is also used for 

connection of conventional standard IO (SIO) 

sensors/actuators. This not only reduces the additional 

wiring effort to the absolute minimum, 

but also protects investments already made, 

since proven topologies can continue to be used 

and need not be changed. 

A further advantage of IO-Link is that expensive 

shielded cable can be dispensed with, due 

to the elimination of analog measurement 

value transmission. The bidirectional IO-Link 

communication puts the overriding automation 

system in a position both to write parameter 

and configuration data to the sensor/actuator, 

and to read process and diagnostics data 

from the sensor/actuator. However, IO-Link can 

also handle communication via binary switching 

states as used by conventional SIO sensors. 

The new communications standard is thus 

backwards compatible, almost without restrictions, 

and can be applied combined freely, including 

with non-IO-Link-capable devices. 

Due to the open standard, IO-Link can be integrated 

in all popular automation and fieldbus 

systems so that a high level of flexibility with regard 

to supplier selection continues to be 


maintained. Integrations for Profibus, Profinet, 

Interbus, ASi and EtherCAT are already available 

and IO-Link integration in the ODVA is 

being pursued. 

In order to ensure the requirements for, for example, 

over-current and over-voltage protection, 

defined in the IO-Link specification, a 

large number of individual components, transistors, 

diodes and other passive components, 

are used in the majority of the IO-Link devices 

so far available. For the first IO-Link field devices, 

this was the only way to map the interface 

to the wire and to fulfil the IO-Link specification. 

Especially problematic here has been the 

required interoperability with the control side, 

since the corresponding electrical circuits can 

only orient themselves to the IO-Link 

specification. 

A remedy for this is the IO-Link transceiver 

E981.10, which now offers developers of IO- 

Link-capable sensors/actuators a highly integrated, 

space-saving solution for the wire interface. 

The driver component, which is backwards 

compatible to standard IO applications, 

fulfils the requirements of all relevant standards, 

and its features include a wide input voltage 

range from 8 V to 36 V, a high driver capability 

up to 200mA, integrated wake-up detection and 

a data transmission speed of up to 230.4 kbps.

Schematic overview: IO-Link in industrial automation 

The driver stage can optionally be used as low-side, high-side or pushpull. 

Short- circuit, over-current and over-temperature protection 

functions ensure a high operating safety and also simplify application 

design. 

Thanks to an internal 5V voltage regulator and a 3.3/5V compatible 

digital interface, the E981.10 can be combined with a variety of popular 

microcontrollers e.g. with a NEC 78K0R MCU, which in this case takes 

over protocol implementation. The component is useable with a chip 

temperature up to +150°C and is provided in a small 4x4mm QFN 

package, thus making it ideally suited for use in compact sensors and 

actuators. How useful the diverse functions of the E981.10 prove to be 

in practice is shown in examples including the integrated wake-up 

detection. In most cases, an IO-Link system consists of an IO-Link 

master and one or more IO-Link devices i.e. sensors and actuators. The 

IO-Link master provides the interface to the programmable logic controller 

(PLC) and controls communication with the IO-Link devices 

connected. 

As a result of the backwards compatibility of IO-Link devices to 

standard IO (SIO) ports of the higher level control, IO-Link sensors and 

actuators initially behave like SIO devices. However, it is possible for the 

IO-Link master to identify IO-Link-capable devices in the network and 

switch over to IO-Link communication mode. This takes place by a sonamed 

wake-up signal. During wake-up, the signal applied to the sensor 

in SIO mode is overwritten by the master with a typically 80μs impulse. 

The signal state can be high or low level, according to the sensor 

output signal. The information about a wake-up event exists for the software 

of two bits; from the level to be driven (TXD) and the level to be 

received (RXD). A combinatorial linkage of two IO ports for generation 

of an interrupt is generally not available with the microcontroller used. 

Support of the wake-up procedure by the E981.10 reduces the demands 

on the software, which otherwise would have to monitor the communication 

path by comparing the send and receive signal in high resolution. 

The binary wake-up signal provided by the transmitter can trigger 

an interrupt, which in turn results in relieving the microcontroller. 

The signalling of an over-current error condition (ILIM signal), caused 

by a short circuit or other incidents, is a further example of the high flexibility 

of the IO-Link transceiver. This feature contributes to a significant 

increase in the long-term reliability of the product. By recognizing 

these errors, the software can react intelligently and deactivate the 

driver stage. In addition, the power dissipation can be reduced by 

examining the line for over-current in long intervals. 

With the qualification and final EMC tests at the renowned test and 

certification body of the FTZ in Zwickau, Germany, development work 

on the IO-Link transceiver has now been completed according to plan. 

The official test report of the FTZ Zwickau, which proves compliance 

with the EMC limit values at transmission rates of up to 230.4 kbps, is 

available upon request. ■
