Equity, Gender <strong>and</strong> sustainability considerations<br />

Workplace interventions should focus not only at central levels but also peripheral levels. Specific<br />

considerations should <strong>the</strong>refore be given to gender related issues especially in some aspects for example<br />

female HCW may be subjected to sexual harassment in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work.<br />

Preamble<br />

Young people aged 10 to 24 constitute a third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tanzanian population. Prevention <strong>of</strong> HIV in young<br />

people is an investment that will ensure future HIV-free generations. In Tanzania 22% <strong>of</strong> 15-19 year-old<br />

girls are married x . Fur<strong>the</strong>r research shows that more than 30% <strong>of</strong> sexually active girls had a coerced sexual<br />

debut. xi Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore 20 % <strong>of</strong> girls have had intercourse by age 15 <strong>and</strong> 68 % by 18 xii . Once <strong>the</strong>y become<br />

sexually active, young people tend to have multiple partners xiii . About 52% per cent <strong>of</strong> 19 year olds have<br />

been pregnant or have a child, <strong>and</strong> almost half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se had no formal education xiv . Nearly a third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

victims <strong>of</strong> unsafe abortion are teenagers, <strong>of</strong> whom almost half were 17 years <strong>of</strong> age or younger xv .<br />
