The distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> infection across <strong>the</strong> regions shows that <strong>the</strong>re are 3 regions with adult prevalence<br />

above 10% (Mbeya, Iringa <strong>and</strong> Dar es Salaam), 7 regions with prevalence below 5% (Manyara, Kigoma,<br />

Singida, Mara, Lindi, Kagera <strong>and</strong> Dodoma) while <strong>the</strong> remaining 11 regions have a prevalence between 5<br />

<strong>and</strong> 8%.<br />

As depicted in Figure 2 above, <strong>the</strong>re is no single HIV epidemic in <strong>the</strong> country but probably several dozen <strong>of</strong><br />

localised HIV epidemics which sometimes have a regional, sometimes only a district dimension.<br />

There are signs that <strong>the</strong> overall national figures are stabilizing <strong>and</strong> even going down slightly in <strong>the</strong> last five<br />

years iii .<br />
