LINNAEAN NAMES OF THE GENUS CARDAMINE
4. CARDAMINE foliis simplicibus oblongis dentatis.
Cardamine petraea cambrica, nasturtii facie. Dill. elth. 70. t.
61. f. 71.
Nasturtium petraeum. Pluk. alm. 261. t. 101. f. 3. Pet. herb.
50. f. 3.
Habitat in Angliae, Arvoniae, Merviniae, Sueciae rupibus
excelsis.
Linnaeus’s phrase name is his own and there is also corresponding specimen in the
Linnaean herbarium in London (LINN), no. 835.5. There are several inscriptions
written by Linnaeus on this sheet: “4 petraea” at the bottom, strongly suggesting that
the specimen was in the Linnaeus’s possession before 1753; “Hernösand [on Gulf of
Bothnia] (Savage, 1945: 113)” at the bottom of the plant, indicating the place of
origin and the synonym “Nasturtium petraeum” on the reverse of the sheet. The
plant itself corresponds well to the current use of the name, which is now broadly
accepted as belonging in the genus Cardaminopsis as C. petraea (L.) Hiitonen in Hyl.,
Fört. Skand. Växt., ed. 3: 62, 1941.
The second phrase name in the protologue is that from Dillenius’s Hortus
Figure 2. Left, the lectotype of Cardamine trifolia L., LINN, no. 835.7; Right, the lectotype of Cardamine
parviflora L., LINN, no. 835.10 (Both photographs by courtesy of The Linnean Society of London).
