IEA Blue Scenario
The IEA Blue Map Scenario (2008) was the first IEA scenario projecting a
substantial part for solar in the foreseable future, taking off in 2030.
Projection of
Total energy
consumption

Today’s forecast has about doubled (same share already in 2060) due to the
exponential growth figures of PV installed capacity (PVPS newsletter 09-2010).
Production (MW) by country in 2009, the Netherlands are not in the top ten.
The estimated turnover of
Scheutren and
Solland is about 400 mln €.
Machine export to China for cell
production, not included in this
picture, is a substantial 3%
market share which amounts to
Another 250 mln € turnover.
BIPV in European Countries.
BIPV in Germany is < 5% of the market (highest percentage is roof tops)
BIPV in France is > 50% of the market.
BIPV in Italy is about 20% of the market.
BIPV in Spain is about 2% of the market. (highest percentage is ground
mounted systems)
In France, Italy, Germany and Spain there exist special feed in tariffs for BIPV.
This explains why we have have no estimates for the other countries.
BIPV is a small part (440 MW in 2010 BCC
report) of the current global market figures
but expected to grow to a Gigawatt market in
both the USA and Europe in 2015.
BIPV has a high added value and targets
very specific markets in public, private,
commercial and industrial buildings in
different countries.
BIPV projects have a long standing in the
Netherlands (see also IEA PVPS task7),
with participation from parties like ECN
and Bear Architects.
Sequana Tower Paris, Scheuten Solar

The Netherlands have a small but innovative domestic market
BIPV means many different products in different market segments
1. Commercial
2. Private
3. Public
4. Industrial
Public and Industrial lag behind,
Products range from facades and roofs to shading and electronics. PV cell
technologies are all applied in specific products.

BIPV business cases instead of grid parity?
BIPV follows PV trends, so lower solar cell prices and growing share of thin fiilm.
Some examples of reasons to buy BIPV:
- Aesthetics
- Energy efficiency in buildings
- Replacing building materials
- Theft
- Limited space
- Conspicuous consumption
- etc.

Calzi project. Roof system with thin
film on steel construction, developed
by Corus (part of the Tata Group
which took over BP Solar recently.)
The Dutch PV sector has become
completely internationally integrated
over the last 3 years.
Some companies like Tata and
Bosch go for vertical integration

BIPV national actions.
• DEN program targets BIPV.
• IPZ second and third (last) phase.
• NRW – NL congres september 10 includes BIPV
• SEAC becomes active (Green deal)
• New Eranet PV joint calls include BIPV.
• General support in EU calls, Eurostars and national
Innovation Credit, Starters Facility.
• International mission EVD could include BIPV if sector shows
interest.
• Bilateral actions possible if sector shows interest/initiative.

Conclusions.
• BIPV Dutch domestic market is relatively small but
innovative.
• The existing change is in design, development and
production.
• It is about a growing markets share in growth maket.
• Focus on cost reduction in components and production.
• Focus on up scaling projects in niche markets in the EU.
• Welcome relative newcomers from other sectors like
building, creative industries and other industrial sectors.
