Continued improvement. The completion of the
regeneration works is only the first step in providing and
maintaining our stations to the standards required.We are
ensuring that the processes are in place to enable the
continued improvement of facilities and to guarantee that a
satisfactory condition is maintained.
Throughout the year, we have been working with our
partners and suppliers to create effective regimes for
inspection and collection of condition data to enable a
greater accuracy in planning future maintenance and
renewals.This has been piloted in an area of the North West
and is now being implemented in our other Zones.
The process enables maintenance plans, over 20 years,
to be generated efficiently and updated through annual
inspections.Any defects discovered through these inspections
are programmed for either immediate remedial works or
planned maintenance and renewal,depending on their
condition.
This procedure will ensure that the improvements and
innovations made through the SRP are sustained and,
additionally, provide an annual update of the condition of our
stations against which we can target and monitor further
improvements.
In addition, we have continued with our commitments
to improve the quality of station facilities where possible
through renewals.Examples include station access for
disabled passengers,information systems,CCTV, fencing and
lighting to improve customer confidence and safety.

4.6 Depots
There are currently 88 LMDs on the rail network,providing
the facilities to undertake necessary train maintenance.
Depot regeneration programme. The depot
regeneration programme continues apace , rectifying the
inherited defects at existing depots. Works range from small
scale targeted repairs at some locations to major reroofing
at others,such as Ilford and East Ham.
This fi ve - year programme is now entering its fo u rth ye a r
and wo rk has begun on over 50% of sites, with a further 25%
planned for the coming ye a r.This major programme of wo rk s
will be completed, as planned, by 2001.
Carriage washers. Surveys undertaken between May
1995 and October 1996 highlighted a need for investment
in carriage-washer plants,with much of the of the existing
plants inadequate to meet our customers’aspirations.
Since this time, we have invested to ensure that this
service is provided to an expected standard and quality.
Our progress to date is indicated in Table E of Section 5.3.
We are introducing the first all-weather carriage-washing
plant in Great Britain at Leeds Neville Hill depot.
